"Fake" may be a bit harsh. It was a reproduction that the seller passed off as an original "period" piece. The guy admitted he was an amateur collector, as in, not an expert. If the seller had been reputable, he would have allowed the buyer to have an expert examine it. He got off easy, buying it for $800. That's roughly what the reproduction would cost, new in box.

one thing i learned is if you are buying an antique item make sure it has paper work
@toddy2519
@toddy2519 6 жыл бұрын
Many antiques, like guns, have no paperwork to prove it's provenance. The best thing to do is get a receipt stating if the firearm is not what the seller claims, (an original/antique) your money will be refunded. Then, have it appraised later by a certified firearms appraiser. If you have a receipt such as this, the seller refuses to honor the receipt with it specified as an original it will stand up in court as a valid contract. Very simple, protect yourself!

I looked at a pistol several years ago like this with my dad at a gun show. He pointed out the stamp marks and told the everyone within ear shot that a gun this age marks are engraved not stamped. The sell claimed innocence claiming he was ripped off as well. If your going to collect be aware of crooks will go to great lengths to cheat you.

LMFAO why would you buy something like that with no provenance?
@topbreak38
@topbreak38 6 жыл бұрын
You go to a gun show, you see something you like, you don't know anything about it, the seller gives you a story, they act sad or angry if you even sound like you don't believe them, you choose to trust them, then regret in leisure. It happens at gun shows, comic book conventions, antique shops . . . sometimes you get an unscrupulous seller and sometimes the seller genuinely believes they have something special. You also don't get provenance with a lot of things, unfortunately, especially something that might have been picked up from the battlefield. This is why proof marks make dating and placing firearms easier than a lot of other artifacts.
@Vincent_Beers
@Vincent_Beers 6 жыл бұрын
topbreak38 gun show or not, you don't buy artifacts without provenance, it's even more expected from a reputable dealer because he should have never had it in the first place without documentation. No smart reseller would have bought it without documenting the history unless they were going to attempt ripping someone off
@gestapo43
@gestapo43 6 жыл бұрын
Provenance or not, know what you are looking at. Some basic research into that type of weapon would have told him it was a fake. Doesn't anyone read a book anymore? It looked to me like one of the Japanese manufactured reproductions from the 1970's. The lack of Proof House markings on anything British(or European for that matter) is a red flag.
@topbreak38
@topbreak38 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if you know what provenance is. It is difficult to establish and even harder to keep intact. Many times an object is passed through a family and the only "provenance" attached to it is the story the family passes along with it. If this were what is known as a "battlefield pickup," there wouldn't exactly be a receipt for it and objects like this are sometimes handed down or given away without a lot of documentation following it. He trusted the person who represented the firearm as real but did not know what to look for to avoid losing money. It's not always as simple as "getting the paperwork."

lots of people like to gamble but their gambling is buying things they think are worth a lot but they know its a big risk. I do this from time to time but I always do it with money I'm okay losing, and I go into it being fine if I find out that the item I bought isn't worth much. foe example, I'll go to an estate sale and if I see an old poster or something I like, I may pay $40 or something for it and some times its worth $200 or so and I'm happy, sometimes the item is worth nothing but I was okay rolling the dice with my money. I actually bought a gun for $500 from an estate sale and sold it for $1,500 a month later. you win some you lose some, but the thrill of the gamble is worth the price. But if you don't have the money to do it, you shouldn't be gambling with your rent money hahahah

No paperwork, no sale. If I want a reproduction, I want reproduction prices. Do your research. Know what you're buying. Are the marks supposed to be stamped or etched/engraved? Be able to tell the difference. Look for proof marks and that they are proper.

"im an antique gun collector with years of experience, i have an antique gun, how do i know its an antique gun? cause the person who sold it to me told me so! I believed him cause why would a salesman lie? he said he had no paperwork to prove it but i saw his lips move when he said it was real and thats all i needed to know that he was telling the truth! why would a salesman at a fly by night gunshow be telling a lie? well my money is tight so i gotta sell it, but instead of giving it to a museum that could possibly pay more for it im gonna take it to a televised pawnshop so everyone can see me sell it! what could go wrong!"
