@ekimshield asstriks is worse. Yes black Sox was playing to lose for a reason, they wanted a salary that was fair so they stuck it to the owner. What the asstriks did was cheat everyone else. They "won" without deserving it. Both the Yankees and dodgers had a better team that year. Without the cheating they would have lost to both teams.

The signatures may be genuine but the baseball dates from the mid thirties at the earliest. Up to then red and black twine was used for the National League ball (Spaulding) and red and blue for the American League ball (Reach).

The 1919 White Sox were actually these second highest paid team in the league that year. But their owner withheld all of the bonuses he promised them. Benching Ed ciccotte for five games so he wouldn't hit his bonus.

What they said wasn't entirely true. The White Sox weren't the worst paid team in 1919; far from it. In fact, their overall payroll was among the highest in baseball. Part of that was due to Eddie Collins, the starting second baseman who had a degree from Columbia. He negotiated a salary that was one of the highest in baseball, 5-6 times the average. The rest of the Sox were paid average to just above average for the time, but many of them were far from average players. In addition to the two hall-of-famers in the video (Schalk and Faber), Collins would also make the HOF, and at least two of the suspended players were sure bets for the hall (OF Joe Jackson and P Eddie Cichotte). You could make a case for one or two others as well.
