I think Rick explained it quite well when he said that even if he sells the book he has to wait a year to do so. That's $8,000 tied up and doing nothing for a whole year. If he knew he could get a quick sale he would offer her more.

@OverlandOne
@OverlandOne 6 жыл бұрын
She said $14,000 IF the restoration worked out well. They do not always work out well so Rick is taking a big chance here. She should have said the value as it was with the mold which might have been like $500. Yes, if all goes well Rick will make some big bucks here and a piece of history will remain intact. I am simply amazed at the folks that want to sell things of value that go to a pawn shop. That is not where you get the best value for items.

@CryptidProductions
@CryptidProductions 6 жыл бұрын
He's taking a massive risk because something could come up that makes restoration cost a lot more or they could turn out to have damage that makes them unsalvageable. I'd say 50% of retail for something that's so damaged and needs to be restored is fair price.

"Alexander joins forces with James Madison and John Jay to write a series of essays defending the new United States Constitution, entitled The Federalist Papers. The plan was to write a total of twenty-five essays, the work divided evenly among the three men. In the end, they wrote eighty-five essays, in the span of six months. John Jay got sick after writing five. James Madison wrote twenty-nine. Hamilton wrote the other FIFTY-ONE!" I'm sorry, I just had too. 😂

She is one of the best negotiaters I have ever seen. Behind the scenes sort of speak as I did Professional sales and was trained by some of the top pros, her negotiable skills I adore and respect. I utilize the same skills she does ( which is rarely seen in the general public) and successfully sold to other Professionals at the price I wanted. She known 8, 250 was not what she really wanted but set it at that to negotiate to the lower amount she really wanted. Nothing more and nothing less. The kicker of this all is she was blunt honest with her husband finding these books in the trash. I think if she said she bought them at a higher amount, the deal would of got her about 7, 500. But she did a amazing job here and was totally honest in which I respect.

Concerning the presence of mold and Rebeccas reaction towards where the book was found; I used to work in a retail environment repairing cellular equipment. I have encountered many customers that would bring in their equipment, mostly cell phones, with the complaint of malfunction. Upon further inquiry towards the malfunction, the customer would then state something like, "It fell in the toilet." So, I'm sitting there with this potentially human waste soiled and potentially pathogen laden item in my bare hands, and all I can say without totally losing my shit and getting fired is "Ah, yeah. Your warranty is voided. Contact insurance." ****Insert Mr. Brown joke****

Lola Hunter staged or not, it depicts standard pawnshop tactics that the majority of shops in the US practice. The fact of whether this show is staged or not is completely irrelevant to the point being made in the comment.

Why does Rick constantly think its the seller's problem that he might have to hold onto it for 6 months? Its not a quarter million dollars. It seems like the current low-ball reason on the show. Thats the nature of retail. Unless he goes to another pawn shop to get instant cash, he's going to have to wait for someone to buy it. Thats like Seers wanting a better wholesale price from Kenmore because "hey, we gotta sell these things." And honestly, he sells this book with like 4 phone calls, if not less.
@easytherepilgrim2339
@easytherepilgrim2339 6 жыл бұрын
I highly doubt that Rick can pick up the telephone and sell a book in lousy condition for $14K. And it DOES make a difference how long your money is tied-up; that's Business 101. It's going to be months before the book comes back from restoration.
@575forza
@575forza 6 жыл бұрын
Of course, time does matter, but the nature of _his_ business is that he gives instant cash so the customer doesnt have to wait around to sell it. He's literally paying for it sit around. If it were an easy instant sell at full price for anyone, that guy wouldnt be in the pawn shop.
@easytherepilgrim2339
@easytherepilgrim2339 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think Rick is low-balling though. If he gives her $9K or $10K....and restoration doesn't go so well and costs $2k....then he might only sell it for $11K or $12K. He can't take that risk.

Rick - “I’m taking a big risk with these. I can give you 10k. Not a penny more”. GameStop “I can give $50 in store credit...do you want to sign up for a GameStop award program?”

Maybe he is referring to a different kind of trash. People in the USA, keep unwanted dry items (aka dry trash) near their driveway for recycling companies or weekly trash pickup trucks to pick up. I've seen a lot of people dig through these and find great things.
