I would LOVE to have that tune up machine! I'd use the heck out of it! I met one of the guys that worked on Allen analyzers in the 80s . Laptops and old scanners are tire chocks on older classic cars, tractors and many other things. That and Allen's machine in the right hands will actually diagnose much more internal problems than can be fixed instead of just replacing parts than most OBD systems. Try dialing in a 1983 Chevy crossfire injection without it!
@vilefly
@vilefly Жыл бұрын
They were a toolbox on wheels, for sure. As for the crossfire injection, the OTC scan tool helped if you knew what you were doing, but you still needed a scope and a timing light. A manometer was needed if some fool kid messed with the throttle stops. We had bought one of these from the walmart automotive section for $120. We kept our friends' cars running good, despite one of them being an RX-7. There was a specific knob position for rotary engines on it, plus 2 or 4 cycle settings in case you ran into a Saab two-stroke car as well. We kept it in our car port. The best part was....IT WAS TOO BIG TO STEAL.

I started working in a shop in 1971 that used an upgraded model of this Sun machine. it was capable of analyzing up to 12 cylendars and had the ability to test for carbon-monoxide and well as nitrous-oxide emissions through a probe that was inserted in the exhaust pipe. A good mechanic could tell you if you had a fouled plug, bad spark plug wires, bad points or condensor, be used to adjust your carburetor and set your timing.

You just reminded me of a funny trivia. Rick actually tried to pitch the show to Discovery or National Geographic, I don't remember which. They rejected the pitch by saying "Sorry to break it to you fellas, but no one's going to watch 4 fat guys sitting around in their store." Rick brought the pitch to History and they jumped at the show like wolves. Guess whoever turned them down must stay awake at night thinking about that mistake 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I feel the outdated technology category doesn’t make sense. Just look at the video game market. For example, every Nintendo console before the Nintendo Switch is technically outdated. But people will pay the equivalent of a brand new Switch console for certain Gamecube games.
