There is an estimated 55,000 teacher vacancies in the United States. More than 5,000 of those are in Florida, the state leading the nation in the demand for teachers.

After two years, teachers should be making at least 80,000 a year. It is a difficult job. Teachers do not get the respect they deserve. It says something about a country that does not value the people who are instructing the young.

$100K a year to start, rising sharply in subsequent years. Ask yourself. Whose work is more important, a kindergarten teacher or someone who spends their time trying to haggle down the taxes of some multinational which makes money producing non-food food like soft drinks.

I taught in Flagler County. Horribly low pay, huge classes, and disrespectful students, coupled with administrators that fudge grades. I had a senior who started the year with a 0.85 GPA and ended up graduating with a 3.2 GPA. Grade fraud is everywhere, along with a tense racial atmosphere. I used to teach in NJ, and I wish I was still there.

A comedian said "if teachers were so smart, they would not choose to become teachers."

I’m smart, because if I don’t do it, who will? I like to believe in the common good and maybe I can inspire, enlighten, and push kids to do something great. Or at least to find a strength or ability they didn’t see in themselves.

People may not believe what I’m about to say but it’s true-twenty years ago-20 years!-teachers in Broward County with thirty years’ experience had a salary of $71,000. That was the top payment step possible. I am a current teacher with twenty years, and my salary is $51,000. That’s right, $20k less… twenty years later. But how? Around 2010, the state essentially froze the step system, one that financially rewarded veteran teachers for years of good service. So those of us with 15 years of experience at the time never ended up getting the promised step increases in years 20-30. I’ve been underpaid almost $180,000 over the past dozen years or so. The county, of course, was fine with us getting frozen and paying us less. And this, folks, is why teachers leave the day they can collect their now greatly reduced state pension. It’s sad. And the county will continue to suffer mass staffing shortages as the word is clearly out that teachers will continue to take a financial beating if they stay in the classroom. Ultimately the kids will suffer as people enter and exit the job after a few short years. It’s already happening. This plan to bump pay to $80k per year will not happen in my lifetime, especially as long as the district remains top heavy and administratively bloated. Home Depot here I come!

Yes, by all means, become an educator. Subject yourself to daily gaslighting, victim blaming, verbal assaults, and even physical assaults, for pay so low that you can't afford to live in the district you are teaching in, and for a job that no one respects and has become a punchline ("if you can't do, teach"). But don't worry, you will be comforted by the pervasive mythology that you can be that one magical teacher you had as a student who changed your life. One day you'll be that teacher too. For one student, maybe, out of 1,000. But all of the emotional trauma and physical deterioration will make it worthwhile. The public school system is dominated by behavior coaches and principals with doctors of education degrees, which is quite frankly the most useless degree, whose only purpose is to bully and terrify educators with archaic licensing standards and absurd social-emotional-learning models, which blames the teachers for everything while holding students accountable for nothing. Student didn't show up for class? The principal will blame you. "What aren't you doing to MAKE the student WANT to show up? WANT to be on time? WANT to pay attention? WANT to be engaged? WANT to follow the rules? WANT to do their work? WANT to not verbally attack you or assault you?" Yes, the principal will even blame you for being verbally assaulted and physically assaulted by your own students. And all of this without even talking about the parents, who will blame you also for when their perfect little angels are misbehaving ("my kid doesn't act like that at home!").

Left wing teaching unions have pandered to political correctness resulting in a lack of discipline in most American public schools. Teachers in Catholic schools are badly paid compared to public schools. But they are more content as they are able to enforce discipline.

If you think that is what we teach, go to a school and see what we do. Yes, I am sure there may be 1 or 2 awful inappropriate people who should be removed. But that does not mean we are all unethical. I work my life away trying to make a positive difference and raise decent humans.

@@notasheep12yea you are talking about 0.001% of teachers. That is why your comment is nonsense. That is just political buzz words from the right to scare you and its base. I have never met a teacher talk about sex to kids unless it is a high school health class.
