At one point I had $44,000 in credit card debt. (Thanks, college) I have been credit card debt free since June 2017. I did it by going without. I drove an old 1998 Ford instead of a new car. I lived in an apartment instead of a house. I worked two jobs for a while, then worked the overtime shifts on Saturdays that no one else wanted. I paid as much as I possibly could each month, and it took years. Now I have a new car and a house, and zero credit card debt. There's no shortcut out, you just have to power through it. But it can and will happen.

I started on the debt snowball and after the first few credit cards were gone, I could really see the progress. However I had a lot of large amounts in high interest debt, where most of my lower amounts were low-interest/no interest. 55% of the money being put towards debt was getting eaten up by interest payments I shifted gears and started attacking the highest interest first (with the same motivation) and from my calculations it will save me 8 months in my debt-free journey. I still agree with dave's method for the majority of people, but once that motivation is there, I recommend highest interest first.

We became DEBT FREE (except house) in December 2017! 37,000 of debt paid off in 18 months (school loans and car loan)!!! (Not easy in Canada with high mortgage rates, taxes, inflated food and gas prices and extremely insane daycare prices!) I made 90 k but take home more like 60k after taxes. Daycare costs 50-60$ a day. A small 1400 square foot town house is 300,000....crazy lol

Dave by the end of this week. I will have the first $20k of my snowball paid off. You have given me hope for a bright future. I had lost my job two years ago and got into a lot of dept. Psychologically it is more beneficial to get rid of the small debts first I agree. Getting one debtor after another off your back must feel great and I'm starting my snowball rolling.Thank you x I also look at things this way: the large debts I'm still winning cos I have their money and they don't have it. If I die before its paid off the debt dies with me. Win:win. Make the people who want to make most money out of you wait longest to get their money back.

We did the highest interest rate first and it worked..but you have to really want to do it. You also have to be good with long-term rewards instead of the faster reward you get from the snowball method. It's all a mental game really.

I tried this method years ago and it ended up backfiring for me. While paying smallest debt with double or triple payments, I was paying the largest debt with minimum payment. 6 months into this, the company with the largest debt contacted me and informed me that a minimum payment was not "satisfactory progress and considerd it a risk", and as a result they doubled the interest rate. I immediately stopped using the debt snowball and started doing 0% balance transfers for large chunks of the debt. Worked like a charm! Paid off over $28k in two years and saved $1000's in interest!

Paying the high interest rate one first can work, if you're enough of a math nerd to perceive (and hate them for) the hurt they cause on your finances and family. If you HATE it with enough of a passion, you'll attack it. But Mr. Ramsey is right, you have to be passionate and focused about it. I was somewhat lucky that some of the higher interest ones of mine were small.
