Then we realised how much apart some of the salary was (for the same role) People who were hired a few months later had around 8 - 10k a year more. Which is insane. This caused people to leave, and others with lower pay to work less. Eventually everyone was complaining and the mood was so low. And now nobody does anything above and beyond anymore

With a union, your rate is tied to the job description and placed on a grid based on duties. which is published and can be grieved if improperly placed on the grid. Doesn't get more transparent than that.

Just a reminder that although discussing pay rates is a protected right in a lot of the world, this does not mean you are at liberty to divulge someone else's without their permission! Aside from being illegal a lot of the time, it's not alright to deprive people of agency by making important decisions for them. If they don't want to share that information for whatever reason (safety, desire for privacy, etc.) you need to respect that.

I've never had a problem discussing my pay, even if it was discouraged by management. I'm not competing with other employees, and I'm only concerned that I'm paid what I'm worth. those who know my work, know I'm worth what I'm paid (I wouldn't still be working there, if I'm not paid what I'm worth). the only _benefit_ I find in discussing it, is to gauge what I should be paid, as I become more proficient

Yea, I was being paid 10k less then the person in my position previously but asked to do more. I found out that someone I managed made more then me and even they were confused. I asked my boss about it and asked about a raise a he said "It's fair pay for a Woman in your position." I went to HR and then 1 month later my position was "eliminated" and they said bye. However he made sure to remind me that my non-compete agreement would still be in effect for 6 months and they weren't going to be paying unemployment... then Covid hit. Transparency is needed and pay gaps and non-competes sucks.

So Rowan set this whole thing up after all. He wasn't actually dumb when rising Ellie pay rate.

In the USA it's illegal for an employer to tell you you can't talk about your pay. I've had several employers try telling us that we can't talk about how much we make at work and that is absolutely illegal.

How much discussion was there in the Navy about Pay? None, we knew the pay within a $200 for the month. Different extra pays for getting certain quals. We would bitch about some promotions or rankings but whatever. Civilian side, pay has become a highly contested issue. New guy with no experience and not very bright, comes in 0.25 over a 12 senior guy who knew everything and could go anywhere with his badge access. We were pissed he got paid $4-5 more than us next level guys but him getting paid more than our senior guy. You bet we raised hell about that. I mean this guy argued with me for 45 minutes and then another 70 minutes with another guy. Water goes in? Yes. Water comes out the reject side of the RO? YES. No water comes out the clean side? Correct. Change the RO Membrane. That is literally the only thing in there. He still argued. The idiot is still there. Why wouldn't he. Knowing your job clearly wasn't required.
