It's not often you see bowlers using plastic balls for their strike shot these days.. But there are rare occasions where, for one reason or another, bowlers are forced to turn to plastic.
In this video we take a look at PBA bowlers who had to use plastic instead of reactive or urethane bowling balls. The results may surprise you...

So, for Brian Ziesig to win his 1st title (and so far his only title), he had to beat Walter Ray (GOAT) & Jason Belmonte (Future GOAT) with a plastic ball at that. Got to say that's pretty impressive.

I believe the pattern volume was drastically reduced for this show. It was the shark pattern but they used half the volume. In the real shark pattern they never would have gotten those balls to hook.

I miss the plastic ball challenge. I was at a sweeper that only allowed plastic balls last year and I came in second behind the great John Janawicz, who averaged 228. I averaged I think 195 or something. PBA should bring it back and have it as a major. I'd watch it fo sho.

I loved the plastic ball tournaments...took the equipment out of the equation so it was all about pure bowler skill. Disappointed but not surprised thee PBA got rid of it. I do seem to recall that while they did use PBA patterns for the tournaments, it was half the normal amount of oil.

Bring back the plastic ball tournaments. Dry up the lanes and play like it is the 1980s.

1) I miss Mike Machuga, talented guy and responsible for perhaps the greatest online rant against the USBC ever. If you haven't seen it, I encourage everyone to go look for it, I think it is still floating around out there even though it is probably a decade old. 2) Right Lane, if you want to see a legit WRJr masterclass with plastic, I urge you to seek out a telecast he did, probably in 1993 when he started to really pop out on tour as a dominant bowler. Might have been an ESPN summer tour show, but the lanes were just brutal, and he whipped out an Ebonite Maxim to use for his first pitch. I think he won that tournament with it. Awesome vid as always......

The plastic ball suits WRW to a tee,he's always played a straighter line with less hook then most bowlers on tour

There are extreme conditions bowlers can run onto in sport shot tournaments. Knowing how to throw plastic, or other uncommon things can be a huge advantage, rather than trying to make something work.

I'm back after 20 years and bowling no thumb again. Just drilled a no thumb plastic ball. I use a thumb in plastic ball to shoot straight at my spares and it looked amazing on burnt up and walled conditions but wasn't able to throw it with the "holes" rule.

Yes, a Classic tournament where players play using older plastic or old urethane ball style in the straight non reactive ball setup on a 1970's lane setup. The balls have to be brought in new stock off the shelf showing in video the entire process of the player buying the ball either online new or getting the ball in a store either way getting the holes they need and showing being shipped off to the site so as to avoid cheating, I bet the sponsor would send the player $170--$200 to get a ball for this tournament and PBA could if the Pro does not want to keep the ball auction it off to some real charity of the Tournament.

Anyone else renember the Ebonite Clear Wolf or Clear Werewolf. Both were clear plastic balls with the same cores as the $200 Balls. The coverstock provides around 85 to 90% of a balls hook potential but it was still a great idea for burned up lanes?

@caseysmith544

The plastic ball seen most used by PBA pros is one by those sponsored by Brunswick that is the Brunswick Crown Jewel. Brunswick Crown Jewl is a hard covered plastic ball that was made as mid level player to Brunswick Pro Spare ball for straight shots or those who want a more durable and accurate version of the TZone ball or similar cheap no spin ball for the main ball due to the revolution rate and better accuracy.

Listen dude I love overcomplicating bowling, but that’s a lot of words for, “It’s made harder so it goes straighter, all else equal.” I am also genuinely curious where you found the stat of it being the most commonly used spare ball. It’s not that I don’t believe you but that source must have some other interesting information that I want to know.
@ConquerCollin

@keeganmier1272 Its literally the same as every other spare ball. Its just named the same as a ball that was popular in the 70s. I have one and its just a basic spare spall. Sounds like op used chatgpt to come up with those words

Funny. I pull out my plastic ball when the lanes go sideways and everyone hates me for doing it. They say I give up and and anyone can just point the ball at the headpin and score. I find it easier to throw a plastic ball near my original line than to have to move 15 boards left to keep it in the pocket.

I've never heard of people using plastic bowling balls I'm 29 years old and I've bowled for a while and my bowling balls aren't plastic at all so this is a first to me, I would imagine that using a plastic bowling ball wouldn't make that much of an impact on the alley because plastic isn't that heavy and some bowling allies are very oily and I would think that the ball wouldn't move that much even if you have a great curve hand and that the plastic ball would hook the way that you don't want it to go.

While it is "Cheetah," there was less oil volume than the regular cheetah. The PBA got rid of it because their rising star Blowmo got beat in a roll-off by regional guy Ziesig. Also changes in ball material coincide with changes in lane surface with a little overlap. Rubber was king in the days of softer shellac finishes. Plastic did great in the lacquer finish era. Urethane balls worked well in the urethane finish era. And finally resin balls in the synthetic lanes era.

From the video you can see that the balls aren't shiny, definitely a pretty course surface on them. On that long pattern if they were shiny, they wouldn't have hooked a single board, even with Belmos rev rate they would have went dead straight.
