I’m sure we’ve ALL thought of doing this to a PC at some point. But is building a computer in a mini fridge ACTUALLY worth the effort?

@deusexaethera

For those of you who didn't want to watch the whole thing: The mini fridge doesn't work, and _can't_ work, because it's effectively an insulated box with no airflow. The fridge has to run continuously just to pump out the heat that would dissipate naturally if the computer were exposed to ambient air instead. The only reason fridges work to keep food cold is because food isn't generating its own heat; once the fridge has cooled off your food, your food _stays_ cold, and the fridge only has to run for a few minutes every hour to pump out the little bit of heat that leaked in through the insulation.

I think you'd want a radiator or a plate heat exchanger, I don't think you'd want all the junk that makes it's way into a swimming pool circulating through your loop. If you building a new pool, instead of retrofitting an existing pool, you could embed PVC plumbing into the concrete floor of the pool.

The only way this might work with this spec fridge is if there was an exhaust port for the hot air from say the cpu cooler and power supply. boffifis1 That is AFTER it has been cooled. Cold air still contains moisture, so when the build is in the mini fridge, (after very pro-longed exposure) it will probably get some form of damage? I could be wrong... Just a thought I had.
@Decent60
@Decent60 9 жыл бұрын
MarcusMeyerTricks This is why he also said don't use mechanical drives (that would draw moisture quickly and wreck it). Now, because it's not really dropping below 0 C, it wouldn't rack up moisture quickly. However, they do build refrigerated server rack units, which normally have space at the bottom (or options for) case system. Those also draw a chunk of the moisture out and generally are gravity fed rather than conduction (which is where a lot of the moisture comes from).

Napoleon Blownapart actually AC air is pretty dry, isn't it? And in a car you use the ac if it's damp inside to dry it out....
@Napoleon_Blownapart
@Napoleon_Blownapart 6 жыл бұрын
the air itself is dry because the water condensate on the unit cold grills, but some of this cool down moist gets into the air itself and turn to water when it touches surfaces continuously. like metal. thats why ac units produce water, and fridges too. what im saying is, ac does not remove all the water out of the air, it cools it down so it will be more prone to condensation on surfaces. thats why you cant just plug in a pipe directly from the ac and the pc, if you could, there would be already ac cooling on pc's. but you can cool down a room where a pc is as long you are not planing to bring your room to fridge like temps.

@insidetrip101
@insidetrip101 8 жыл бұрын
Well, honestly it depends on how big the freezer is. A rather large (20ish cubic foot) freezer might be able to keep ambient temperatures down for an hour or so. If you had access to freezers that large restaurants use, which are the size of a room, then it could keep ambient temperature down for quite a while (possibly indefinitely). If you had access to a meat packing plant that processes frozen meat... But honestly, if you're going to do that, you might as well just build a computer in the antarctic. You could also just ask your local grocer how much it would cost to lease a spot in the back of their freezer section to put your computer. The larger the freezer, the less the thermal energy from the computer is going to make an impact. But you're right, it will always make an impact no matter how small.

To solve the no air flow problem, you use a small air conditioner instead of an refrigerator, rigged with the air flow going across the motherboard and the better the enclosure is to confine the air flow to across the motherboard only the better. I've actually tested this somewhat by putting my test bench next to an air conditioner floor vent and using cardboard walls to reflect the air across the motherboard. It looked kinda like a small garage with doors open both ends, with the vent on one side and the air flowing out the other. The computer ran unbelievably cool with the CPU below 90 degrees Fahrenheit under load. I wonder if you would need a CPU cooler under this setup.

***** Well, we have a fridge of that size and a separate freezing unit. This gives us about as much, if not more, space than having one of this full sized fridges with only small freezing space. We also don't put as much in the fridge like you do in america. Only those things that actually need to be cooled. Cheese, butter etc. Well, the fact grocery stores can be miles away does not only apply to america. The next grocery store is 9km out, or if you want a really big one with huge stock 14km.

It's the exact same principle. A refrigerator that has a lower set point on the thermostat. The same problem still exists. For this to work, you need to build a small room/case that will be cooled with an AC system, not a fridge. Just think of an actual commercial computer room full of servers. They don't just use a regular AC system like you have serving the rest of the adjoining offices. Those big Leibert units (yes I have a background in HVAC) were designed specifically for such uses. They run continuously rather than tripping on and off. There are smaller systems made for smaller computer rooms, and perhaps one could make a little closet with the indoor half of the system and their PC in there, and the outdoor half outdoors. Not exactly cheap, or practical but then again there's always somebody that will do it just because they can and no one else has.

cant wait to see the cooling a pc with an hvac unit video
@LukeGibsonSS
@LukeGibsonSS 3 жыл бұрын
Without watching the video, I instantly see the problem with this approach if it's going where I think it is. There's much better ways to benefit from the heat exchanger because a fridge is insulated meaning sure it cools stuff down, by pulling the heat out, but it also traps heat in, and a PC is pumping out heat faster than a normal fridge could cool it down so you'd at very least need to have the door open to let the majority of the heat escape, at least then the heat exchanger at the back has some benefit of exposing some part of the system to a cooling effect, but really what you'd want to do to benefit from a fridge like heat exchange system is to gut the fridge and only use the heat exchanger with the heat absorber inside your case and the heat expeller end outside of the case, the problem I'd want to address in this case is to negate any chance of condensation that might get introduced by the extremely cool bars, which might be mitigated with some kind of plastic covering, or find some way just to introduce the cooled air from the heat exchange into the system, essentially think of it more like an air conditioner than a fridge
