This middle ground between clean and dirty is what many of us find closest to what we remember about a good CRT screen.

i found it so cool and crazy what the community was able to do... and basically preserving 90 percent of the old games and make them often even better... emulators provide future proof for the games... no matter what future technology will look like, it will play the emulators just fine... and maybe even better (one day i hope we get back our motion blur free gaming) xD

Looks like you were saving the best of the 16-bit era for last! Lol!! I think this has to be the most impactful of your presets so far. I'm watching it on my cellphone at 1080p and it definitely seems well suited for use on the smaller form factor!

That means a lot coming from you. Something about leaving Slot Mask that is quite freeing....moving away from masks in generaly lol. You ever considered purchasing an 8K screen? Imagine the level of phosphor detail you could recreate
@CyberLabStudio
@CyberLabStudio 2 ай бұрын
@@RetroCrisis It's something I'm considering now actually but I know I'm not going to be purchasing anything like that anytime soon. Lol Especially for primarily CRT emulation. Right now I'm looking at alternatives to OLED TVs for example the TCL QM8, Hisense U8K/U8N and Sony Bravia 7 and Bravia 9. Imagine what can be done with all of that brightness headroom, plus the infinite contrast? Seeing is believing though and it's hard to justify being a guniea-pig with one of these expensive pieces of hardware when you know that OLED already gets the job done at a price that seems a lot more reasonable than the Sony Bravia 9. I'm actually pretty pleased with what can be done right now with 4K WOLED and I've seen many past limitations overcome with sheer ingenuity, creativity and diligence. I was looking at 5K (5120 x 2880), 6K (6144 x 3160) and double stacked 1440p (2560 x 2880) as this should allow for even 6X Integer Scaling. My main issue is not with horizontal phosphor/mask detail but vertical detail where strange interactions with virtual slot wires and scanlines cause very unpleasant artifacts. I'm also very sensitive to unevenly weighted scanline brightness and spacing. With the popularity of bezels and overlays even more vertical resolution is lost. Plus my ideal set right now should also have decent temporal features like the latest strobing BFI technology which would help preserve mask detail during fast motion but it must have the brightness headroom as well to be able to do this. Then there's the whole burn-in thing which I've been burned by. Lol So probably no more OLED TV for me but then again, modern ones might be much better at preventing such that it might actually be the easiest choice. At least you know what you're getting with WOLED. I can't really say that with any other emerging/evolving popular TV tech.

This is the one! To me the slot mask just robs brightness, gonna try this against my current favorite. SF2 is amazing example, the shader gives the screen depth making the cage look properly in front of the crowd, rather than both of them looking the same distance away.
@RetroCrisis
@RetroCrisis 2 ай бұрын
You're totally right, the slot mask definetly does. Might have to go back and redo all my old presets to match
@CyberLabStudio
@CyberLabStudio 2 ай бұрын
It just has to be compensated for by using different methods, while maintaining some semblance of balance. HDR or high brightness SDR are probably the best available today. With RetroArch you can combine the traditional methods of adding artificial bloom, glow and halation with high screen brightness SDR/HDR to get the best of both worlds and most importantly sufficient brightness while having a relatively accurate or nostalgic representation of the Mask effect.
@gameboi8417
@gameboi8417 2 ай бұрын
@@CyberLabStudio this is true, I don't 100% disagree with you, but I do find compensating for it very difficult especially if you aren't on a 4K screen. Also slot masks have enormous variance and I find my favorites are the ones I don't see, like the 2001 Samsung sync master that is still on my desk now, it's a very fine mesh, hardly noticeable. Obviously personal preference but I just don't find that worth emulating. I would much rather lean into an OLED's strengths of color and clarity but also emulate the blending of pixels and illusion of depth.

@@RetroCrisis Oh man, it's my all in one machine now. I've done something totally insane with it. Got a 1.5tb sd card and I got the Odin 2 Max right. Got the dock for it so it can play in 4k. Put a .M2 drive in the dock because it has a slot for it and it's a 4tb Samsung Evo 980+ or whatever that is called. Then I used all of your Shaders and I made my own too with the ones you had. Made an amazing PS1 one but it could be used for all of them I think you'd love it. But, so after I got that setup I started buying as many Bluetooth Controllers as I could to represent each system and through lots of trial and error with Retroarch I was able to setup pretty much the ultimate gaming device. I pick up any bluetooth controller, PS1, Gamecube, Genesis, NES, etc. and go through the Emulation Station and whatever console I wanna play with I use the real controller with the correct CRT shape and Shaders. I play it on a 160' Inch 4K Laser Projector. It's like having the largest CRT of your dreams at the tip of your finger tips. My life is so great now and it's really all thanks to your wonderful Shaders. I know it's a long winded way of saying thank you, but thank you for your hardwork man! I was able to realize a dream and creative vision because of you. So yes, I'm happy with the Odin 2 Max. I love it so much I'm considering selling my real retro hardware because it pretty much makes the old stuff collect dust now.

@@RetroCrisisInterestingly enough, I started with Aperture Grille, then went onto Slot Mask, then attempted what I thought was impossible with Shadow (Dot) Mask. Then went back to Aperture Grille for my CRT-Royale Preset Pack and Sony Megatron Preset Pack because I didn't like the look of the Slot Masks and Shadow Mask and now I've solved that and moved onto Slot Mask with Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor. I'll tell you this if you haven't already figured it out. Slot Mask is inherently the darkest mask when emulating, Shadow (Dot) Mask is the Brightest, while Aperture Grille sits in the middle.

@@RetroCrisis Thanks a lot man. That's just due to me sticking to trying to get the image on my screen that matches the image in my mind and is pleasing to me. There is so much "noise" about accuracy, perfect colour correction and calibration and so many other forms of gatekeeping for such a small niche of a niche that it can get annoying at times though. Some folks take what is supposed to be recreation and entertainment way too seriously. Preservation is important and all of that but my point is just keep doing your thing man and possibly the more mainstream audience you find here might tend to be more forgiving and appreciative. What's good about what you do is you let people participate and ask questions so that ultimately you'll get valuable feedback and members of the community will have the satisfaction of knowing that they helped contribute. For me, I like to be in my own headspace, deep in introspection and seclusion while doing these things. I might get lots of inspiration and ideas while I'm on the surface but tend to work best in my own little bubble. One of my latest ideas is to try to bring my favourite Shadow (Dot) Mask pattern from CRT-Guest-Advanced over to Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor. If you only knew the "struggles" I endured to get the more senior CRT Emulation experts and Shader devs to finally realize that it was possible for WOLED TVs to render sufficiently aligned RGB Phosphors after I had uncovered it by accident in CRT-Guest-Advanced. It was already there but people were saying that you had to use Black and White masks with OLED and subpixel aware masks were impossible. I had to modify the code in Sony Megatron Color Video Monitor myself before my theory could have been accepted, then even after that it looked so good that my own photos from my OLED TV were not even believed initially. Oh what fun times we had back then, but look at us now. Heroes in a field that virtually none of the "normies" care about. We'll probably never win an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, Oscar or Codie for any of this. But definitely credit must go out to the devs, shader creators and those corporations and the creative genius of their employees who brought us all the joy we could imagine through the creation of these multimedia works of art which we call videogames.

@CyberLabStudio
@CyberLabStudio 2 ай бұрын
For 1440p just use Mask 10 or Mask 6 Size 1, 2 or Auto and call it a day. The designers of these shaders didn't really start doing this with the hope that users would be completely dependent on shader preset creators although I know that there is an important niche that those who focus on and share presets fill and there is also a learning curve to these things.
