PCGS grading of Peace Dollars, Barber quarter and dime. Also a 1920 Commemorative, and a capped bust half. Guess the grades with me as I unbox a PCGS submission.

I don't love when coins are graded, but i buy them so i don't get swindled online. I love holding coins and seeing them without the obstruction of the holders. I don't care if that capped bust quarter is cleaned or not, i want it!

Always learn so much from your videos Dr G. The 1834, I would have guessed AU50. The proof barbers honestly have me wanting to pick up an example - love the design, stunning. Glad the cameo came back haha. Some wonderful toning on these coins, the last one 1808 was absolutely gorgeous, sad about the smoothing result it has so much eye appeal. Can't wait for the next video

Thanks buddy. Yeah, the 1808 is an amazing piece of history. That coin has edge lettering, (which I should have mentioned), that looks very poorly made. I wasn't sure if it was genuine, but very glad to find out it was real, considering the overall condition. For me, I agree with you, the eye appeal and condition make up for the cleaning it's had sometime in the past. I'm glad to have it. As always, thanks for watching, and commenting my friend.

Hey Dr. G, I have to say, I love your videos. Your enthusiasm is infectious. When you get excited I can’t help but smile. I’m 48 and currently “deployed” to Kuwait. I was laying in bed, watching KZfaq videos one night, trying to clear my mind enough to fall asleep when KZfaq suggested a video by Rob Finds Treasure. I watched it and was hooked. Then I stumbled upon your videos and of all the coin hunters, yours is the only one I have subscribed to. I haven’t watched them all, but am slowly ticking them off. I’m not a coin collector.....yet....but when I return home, I will be diving in head first. It seems to be a fascinating and rewarding hobby. I went ahead and bought some proof sets for family key dates such as anniversary and birthdays. I bought some silver proof sets as well and made my wife promise she would leave them unopened until I get home. I’m curious, how did you get into coin collecting? Where do you buy your coins? Do you hunt them or look for deals online or in shops? Have you been burned yet? Keep on enjoying what you do and keep putting these videos up. You help soothe a long day and make the time away from family bearable. God bless.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, I can't believe your watching in Kuwait. Wow. First, thank you for your service. I'm a big vet supporter and appreciate all the sacrifices men and women in uniform have given for this country all the way back to George Washington. You sound like me a couple years ago.😊 Coin collecting is a great hobby, and I'm sure you'll really get into it. I'm excited about your proof sets. Meaningful dates are a great way to collect. I do the same thing. And I'm sure your little guy back home will love collecting with dad, or grand-dad :). I buy most of my coins from ebay. Also some from Heritage, and other on line auctions, and coin shows. I don't look for super good deals; when I see a nice coin I am happy with, I just pay regular price. All these coins are so unique, after you look at a lot of them you can tell what is attractive to you. Don't worry about the grade too much either, just buy what you like. One good thing about Ebay is that you can return coins 95% of the time, and return shipping is cheap. I would advise caution when doing business with coin dealers, they are there to make money, even though they will all tell you they have been collectors since they were three. LOL (they're not collectors, they're middle men.) :). Any, yes, I've gotten lots of junk that looked and sounded great on line... Just return it. I'm so glad you enjoy the videos. It's really nice to know I might be helping you guys out even in a small way. I enjoy a fantastic life in America because of people like you. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the great comment Jason. And if I can help you out in anyway don't hesitate to ask. 👍😊

Thank you for your support. I absolutely love what I do. I plan on staying in as long as this body of mine can keep up with them young bucks. I’m pretty hesitant to buy coins on Ebay, but I’ve seen a few sellers with 100% positive feedback, so maybe once I become more confident. Ebay pictures can have a way of hiding flaws though. Guess I’ll have to take the plunge sooner or later. Especially if there are return policies as you stated. Your videos, along with a lot of google searches, are a big help. I even find myself guessing right occasionally. My biggest hang up is knowing an XF from an AU and and AU from an MS. But I’m slowly figuring it out. I’ll definitely be reaching out for some helpful advice from time to time, if you don’t mind. I can’t wait for your next video. Hopefully there will more with mini history lessons embedded within. Love em.

Dr. G, quick question for you. In your opinion, which would be the better value for long term collecting; uncirculated, proof, or silver proof. To add context to the question, I’m looking at buying a 2019 set from the US mint. Should I buy an uncirculated set, proof set, or a silver proof set. I’ve looked online and the only advice I’ve read is to collect what I find interesting. I want to collect for future numismatic value, to pass off to my boys and grandkids. I know your thoughts will only be your personal subjective opinion, but I thought I’d ask anyway. By the way, I only have a few more videos to go to complete your channel. Will you be adding more videos in the future?
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 4 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one for me Jason as I know very little about modern coins. These sets look really cool, but I think that they are producing so many of them that the future value will probably not rise significantly. They are mainly a fun thing to collect. I like proof coins, but they have been advertising the uncirculated set as being coined on a "special press, using greater force than regular circulating coins" I'm not sure what that means. I don't know if they are individually handled like regular proof coins, or are allowed to fall into bags of coins that produce small surface marks similar to the uncirculated sets of the past. Not sure. The limited edition silver proof sets are really nice, but 50,000 sets is not really that "limited" in my opinion, so the future value is anybody's guess. I imagine that's where they get the "buy what you like" advise. :) Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I have lots of coins to make new videos with but I'm swamped over here at the moment. I'm working on setting up another room in the house to make it easier to make videos, but it's involving minor construction,(that I do myself) so that is taking me some time. And, "minor", always turns into "major", construction. LOL

Yes Dr, G you have what is called a wizzed coin on your 1808 Whizzing is done to simulate mint luster. It's done with some type of high speed too (like a dremel). What happens is the tool puts numerous scratches in the coin (similar to flow lines) which simulates the luster. Usually, whizzing is only done to the fields of the coin, but can be done over the devices too. A good whiz job can be hard to detect, and can fool a lot of people. The "giveaway" for a whized coin would be a build up of metal around the raised areas of the coin (this would be where the whizzing stopped). they can be very nice if done by a pro. I bought a couple myself by accident.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I heard they did that a lot in the 60's. I'm sure it's difficult to tell on coins that have been only lightly wizzed. I am a little disappointed it's not a problem free coin but very happy it's not fake. A great piece of history. Thanks so much for the informative comment.

Hahah yeah, expensive experiment. But I learned a lot from that whole experience. Crossovers can kill you, and grading is subjective. The bottom line is that you have to learn to enjoy your coins for what they are. To me the grade is just a general notation of the condition. David Bowers said that numismatics has a steep and long learning curve, and I'm actually thankful for that, because that's where half the fun is. Thanks for the comment.

Isn't that ship awesome? The luster is just fantastic. I really like that coin as well. I had already bought a nice PCGS 1952 CAM half to replace the lost Cameo during the crossover, but I just had to finish the process on this coin and see what would happen. I'm glad they fixed it but that experience really opened my eyes with regard to grading variation. I'll probably just trade this coin in for something that fits into my collection. I'm looking at a 1937 Antietam commemorative to go with my 1937 proof set. "darn things are expensive" :) thanks for the comment my friend.

your 1918 is a great coin considering PCGS have a MS67 coin that is missing nearly half of the shield details and the whole right side of the denticals on the obverse and yet somehow its still a MS67. You can see the coin I mention in the graded coin as the main 1918 larger pictured coin. I have never seen a non full strike coin get MS67 like this date for quarters. I am so frustrated for you on your 1952 cameo they need to be very consistent and I stay away from the cameo's for buying coins to get graded because of this. Glad you got them to give back the well deserved cameo detail. Wow I love your 1808 half what a great looking coin to bad some one screwed it up, but still a keeper in my book. Great coins once again nice video thanks for sharing
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Rich. It's a real hit and miss with the Cameos. There obviously needs to be a different grading system with regards to cameos. There are many degrees of cameo as well as having just one side cameo, and no real way to describe or grade those differences other than the "kind of ridiculous" two grades they have now. I think they should put it on a 1-10 scale noting cameo contrast. There are so many beautiful coins with nice cameo but not enough to warrant a cameo designation (as it exists now) that have no label notation whatsoever. I believe this will change eventually and the coin grading companies will make a killing regrading all these coins. LOL Thanks as always, for the comments Rich.

@@Dr.G Thanks so much for the response. Ohh I know, It is definitely a grueling process in making those videos. I make drone videos every once in a while and it literally takes me hours and hours for just one 5-10 min video. Unfortunately I have a confession. I had always collected coins from a lil kid and you know had the wheat pennies and Buffalo Nickels and silver certificates, just the stuff you can find in everyday circulation. Then about a three years ago I found some old coins that I collected in the attic and got really big into it. It’s funny that now that I’m an adult how different it changes the game. I sort of became obsessed with the coins. Spent probably 20k on them. On eBay and Craigslist and Facebook market place 24/7 trying to find coins. I would go to the bank and Oder $2000 worth of half dollars and search through them to pull the silver out. I amassed quite a collection. 1916 D Mercury Dimes, rare Morgan’s gold and silver eagles sets proofs etc. I went overboard. And I would Always be on KZfaq watching coin videos. It kind of even interfered with my job. My boss caught me taking pictures of a coin in my office to list on eBay. Lol. I’d stay up all hours of the damn night watching videos. And I can hands down tell you that your videos you made are the best out their. After 100’s and 100’s of hours of watching nothing compared to your videos. So I watched every single one. And then their came a point where I watched them all and then all I could do was try and find another person that compared to your quality and knowledge. That never came. So as the time rolled on and I didn’t see any new vids from you I sort of slowly lost interest in the coins. And then the damn Covid hit last year so I took some time off from work and I ended up taking almost my entire collection to the PCGS members only show In New Orleans and sold them all. Took a bath. And then I used all the money to build a giant deck and dock and boat lift on the back of my house. Lol. We live right on the water in Pensacola Florida. It’s funny how your phone is always watching and listening to you. I was laying in bed one night last week and for what ever reason thought about the complete set of PR70DCAM silver eagles I had sold for about $2500 lol and was really regretting that Decision because I told myself I would never ever sell that no matter what. Which I ended up doing. 😫😫 so I decided to search eBay and buy another set. But low and behold. Their wasn’t a single set out their to buy and on top of that was kicking my self in the ass in seeing what there prices have gone up too. I probably sold a couple hundred graded PR and MS 70 eagles for $20-$50 and now even those are through the roof. So just last week I was sitting here and one of your videos pops up on my news feed and so I pretty much watched all your videos again. And that’s what prompted me to send you a message. I noticed you still hadn’t added any new videos but also noticed that you had responded to people’s comments recently so thought I’d give it a shot and write you. Have never done that before but thought I’d tell you how your videos really affected me and how much I greatly appreciated them. Anyhow sorry for the book I’m writing here. Lol Long story short. Your videos once again have sparked my interest and I’m going to start collecting again. I dug out what I had left that completely fits in a shoe box now. Nothing even special basically a hand full of sliver left. Some tube uncirculated eagles and 90% stuff but not a single holdered coin can you believe it. Ahhh thinking of what I all had kills me. Well I suppose I’ll end it here thanks again so much for sparking my childhood memories and hobby. I hope you Post a new video soon. I’m sure I’m not the only person who feels this way. And who knows in today’s world you might be KZfaq famous overnight. The name is Josh if your every in the southeast look me up. 850-586-9299 love to meet you!! Take care. Josh

Torsheim, I do plan on putting together a couple videos featuring some of my favorite pieces with some history and interesting facts. The problem with entire collection videos is that they usually move so fast over each piece that it's kind of mind numbing. I don't think the coins are given the attention they deserve. Another problem is that I'm a complete amateur at editing videos. It takes me ages to finish one, I can barely keep up with what I have coming from PCGS. LOL. But your idea is being taken seriously, and when I have the time I'll do something like that. Thanks for the comment.

If you take PURE ACETONE (get it in bulk at Home Depot) and soak that SLQ for an hour, the PVC residue will melt away and that coin should grade nicely.
@Dr.G
@Dr.G 6 жыл бұрын
I'm sure that would work well Larry. I have a problem with the possibility of removing some of the tone on the obverse though. I might not risk it and just send it in for PCGS to do, I haven't made up my mind yet. If it is a full head, and I think it is, it could be worth a few bucks if it grades high. I might not want to take a chance on me over whitening it. I'll have to think about it. Thanks for the info buddy.
@LarryStendebach
@LarryStendebach 6 жыл бұрын
That is the nice thing about Acetone - it will have ZERO effect on toning...but will only effect and remove non-metals (and it is what they will use if you send it in for conservation...this just saves you some money). Keep in mind that ACETONE is very different from silver dip...which is acid that removes a layer of metal from the coin. Acetone is tried and tested and will do the trick...I have removed worse PVC from very toned coins before...they look awesome after.

Hey Dr. G Whats up! Bummer on the Standing liberty Quarter. Amazing details on it though and if it can be restored that would be awesome. Interesting toning on the Peace Dollar, you don't see that often or at least I have not. That proof Cameo Barber Quarter is absolutely stunning. I would like to have a great example like that one day! That bust half is more worn compared to your other pieces in the video but a beautiful coin with most of the details. It has a nice eye appeal as well. I was so close to getting one a few months back. It is still on the list. Another 65 Barber, Wow! 20 cent piece still has a lot of luster. I wasn't sure on the surface on the front looking like a finger print pattern at first glance. In the clear on that one! The 1927 Peace dollar was still a great looking coin and MS64 is a respectable grade. 65 would have been something though, quite a jump in value. The surface on that last coin can get you at first glance. It is a shame. I really liked the toning. You won out on most of the other ones and I am sure that made up the difference. One of my favorite videos are you going over your graded pieces. Awesome additions sir!
