In this video, I explore the "mysteries" of Oscar Pettiford's composition "Tricotism"...or is it "Tricrotism"? What's the right way to say it? What does it mean? What's the correct version of the tune? HOW DOES THE BRIDGE REALLY GO? Why is it so HARD?! Join me as I answer these questions and more! #Dflat

I'm a self-taught RnB/Funk guy who has always struggled to better understand the Bebop language on bass. This tune is most definitely coming to the shed with me. AMAZING!!! Thank you for another wonderful video, Paul. 🙏🏾🙌🏾

been working on this tune for the past two years. The pandemic made me want to learn this tune. I was distraught but came back to it recently. Beautiful tune and another favorite of mine is "Bohemia After Dark". Great video!

Defintiely a fun tune that I need to get back to working on. I came across this in '94 I think, and even when I think I have it, I need to work at it!

Thanks a lot for the PDF! Nice to compare it to what I picked up by ear...and I there were a few notes that I wasn't hearing. P.C. is a fantastic bebop study. Ditto Doug Watkins...and Larry Gales( love his walking lines with Monk) and Butch Warren and Wilbur Ware(who some folks tend to sleep on) and...🤗✌🏾😉

Have you listened to the bassist Buster Williams album "Pinnacle" ? Or Cleveland Eaton's tune "Hamburg 302"from the album Plenty of Good Eaton.

@@pdbass if it turns out you like Cleveland Eaton's playing , check him out in the live version of Ramsey Lewis Trio's "summer breeze" 1973. Also, the Ramsey Lewis Trio's entire album "Funk Serenity" is pretty good too.

Thank you for this video. I stumbled across Tricrotism a few nights ago and was stuck on it for 2 hours. I am a new bassist, and I found that my teacher gave me a different version of the song and I was wonderiing why. Now I know and this helps me a lot to not feel like "hey which one is it that I ma suppossed to learn?" i now know that it is all of them!

thank you Paul ! any chance you could do a video of Sam Jones ? I studied his work for a class at Berklee, years ago. I was amazed at his use of Quarter tones to make a FAT sound.

A cornerstone of jazz bass playing for sure! I learned the NHOP/Joe Pass version from working with Gray Sargent, and years later had to relearn those last two bars of the bridge right before a show with Ken Peplowski. Yikes! Always check what version the other guy is doing!

From all those versions Oscars sounded best,,,, his was the only one informed with the feel of the time ,, so really, everyone should just stop, there's really no need to play it unless your going to play difficult music on the bass in some orchestra setting , AND truly, I WILL BET ANYONE OUT THERE THAT WAYYYYYYY WAY WAY MORE HITS ARE EASY THAN CRAZY DIFFICULT TO PLAY.... TECHNICALLY COMPLEX MUSIC IS MUSIC THAT DOESN'T COME NEAR THE CHARTS..... I COULD NAME A DOZEN PLAYERS THAT PEOPLE KNOW AS GOOD TECHNICALLY BUT DON'T BY THEIR RECORDS, KNOW ONE OF THEIR SONGS....
