Awesome stuff! Thanks as always... I've been listening to this for ... 35 years (gah!!) and never really noticed there was no whammy on the tune, which aligns with the Flying V usage. It also speaks to the power of the music video, with the scene of Edward soloing on the Frankenstrat while walking on the tables in the library.

PDX...you ARE are Freak (I MEAN THAT RESPECTFULLY) A freak of nature. Your attention to detail is off the charts. I love it! This is my therapy for now....to process our loss. It’s weird to be so affected by the loss of the great EVH. But like you, I’m devastated and I feel hallow. To not think about it, I’m going to throw myself into getting as good as I possibly can at playing like King Edward. Please continue to make these instructional. There’s a whole new generation that will never get a chance to see EVH live and in person. I know you did and I saw them more times than I can remember. Hard to believe he’s gone😥 Now I’ll try and play his music until I’m gone. Thank you!🤘🏽🎸

YESS excellent video lesson/cover here man!! Been following for nearly a decade since I saw your original round and round" cover video back in freshman year, time fucking flies part of my playing truly grew up" with these types of videos of yours! Big change up from the afro wig I'd normally expect to see in your videos tho ;) * BIG request for your next and or future lesson cover videos! * How about wingers "seventeen" solo cover/tutorial?! * Rebs approach to tapping always takes the cake for me! Sure he came after evh randy George lynch etc etc but I bet you will agree with my that reb was the first to make his tapping solo licks sound like super fluid legato runs! As a kid and now if I was just listening and couldn't see his hands I would have thought it's just legato! * Your breakdowns and talking in between takes is beyond helpful and useful, not enough people value stuff like this over a plain tablature. * Anyways, thanks for all the videos dude!! You rock!🤘 Really hope you see this, one day I will have your chops and wicked guitar collection to choose from too haha * cheers from Niagara falls Canada! 🙏🤘 - Adam

Hi Adam, thanks for the very nice comment! Time sure has flown bro :) I'll make note of your request too for the future... I love that guitar solo, and have always wanted to tackle it. Reb is a badass player. I was just watching one of the newer Whitesnake videos recently ("Shut Up and Kiss Me"), and Reb does a little tiny bit of that fluid tapping you were talking about. Man, he and Joel Hoekstra are a killer combo on the guitar. :)

Once again excellent excellent guitar lesson I never miss them! I know Eddie has doesn’t stick to any particular scale besides pentatonic and blues but does he use any modes or just add notes?Also do you think you could do his guitar solo from Live Without A Net or is that too long?I would love to make a contribution to your channel for all your lessons & your time you put into these!
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 5 жыл бұрын
Hey bro, thanks for the nice comment! As for Eddie's use of scales, I think of him as more of a "pattern" player, than a scale player. That is, he probably has patterns (or groupings of notes) in his head that he uses, but they don't always fit within the confines of a traditional scale. Often times (like the finger tapping at the beginning of this one), it's simply a symmetrical pattern on the fretboard... same pattern/sequence on each string. But to your point, he often plays pentatonic based licks too (both minor and major, although more of the former), of which most of this solo is derived (minor pentatonic for this solo). Occasionally, I will see patterns that imply other actual scales such as Dorian or Phrygian, but then he goes off and starts doing his own thing LOL. As for Live Without A Net solo, that's a great one for sure... one of my favorites from the usual collection of known live EVH solos. However, I typically go for much shorter solos in my lessons. Sorry if that's disappointing to hear, but I'd rather be honest upfront. :)

I just pulled out my September 1990 Guitar magazine to start learning this solo and PDX posts a timely how to! I just got through the on Fire solo (another EVH head-turner). Any change you can share your Helix/pedalboard set-up for the EVH stuff?
@PDXguitarfreak
@PDXguitarfreak 5 жыл бұрын
Hey bro, yeah I can share the Helix patch with you that I used. Give me a day or two, and I'll post it on my Line 6 Custom Tone page. Keep in mind - for my own personal use, and for each guitar that I own, I tend to create patches specific to that guitar. In other words, I have a handful of patches that I use specifically with my Flying V... and those will be a little different from the patches I use with my Les Paul... or my Strat... or my EVH Wolfgang, etc. What guitar do you play? Or if multiple, which guitar do you play EVH stuff on? That will help me decide what to post.

Hey Dave, How much do you charge to do a solos. I would like to support you for more Van Halen. Do you have a website? Bob

Hi Bob, I really haven't determined a price. I've had people donate anything from $25 to $100.. but I also have to feel comfortable with the solo... I know my limitations :)

Are you playing that all from memory? Should I learn pentatonic scales first ? I am a rhythm guitar player. I just can’t figure out how you know where to put your fingers so fast. What would be the fastest way that I can learn how to play that

Hi Steve, I think learning scales is an excellent way to segue way into the world of lead guitar. Also, practicing bending notes and vibrato.

I have the tab to this but even till this day, I can't ever seem to get the timing right because some of it is slightly off beat and I'm a percussive player...ugh
