And like I told you, when she holds you She enfolds you in her world. When I hear these words from Harry Chapin I apply them to the language of the BCP & KJV. Once enfolded you can’t escape. So much for the S. Bernard Breviary & others for me.

In all my wandering of confused directions, the KJV is the one constant it seems. I often feel like I have a fundamentalist baptist on one shoulder and a traditional bishop on the other, and I wonder if there is anything that can connect the two, and perhaps this is it.

9:17 Jerome studied with Pharisees? Where can I learn more about this?
@dalecaldwell
@dalecaldwell 2 ай бұрын
They just called themselves rabbis, but they were surviving pharisees, the temple having been destroyed. He learned Hebrews from them, and their canon of Scripture was/is shorter than the church's canon.

@DrGero15 the same as it is for almost all the church today, with the Old Testament, following the Septuagint, just as the New Testament writers quoted.

@@dalecaldwell What about 3 and 4 Maccabees and Psalm 151?
@dalecaldwell

@DrGero15 this are in the ESV with Apocrypha. The Orthodox Study Bible doesn't include 4 Mac. The 1611 KJV doesn't have Psalm 151 or 3 & 4 Maccabees, nor do Roman translations, because Jerome did not translate them, following the decree of Pope Damasus.

That KJV is indeed a wonderful find. I quite enjoy the humorous notion that someone might put out a new Bible translation today, in an attempt to finally put all this Bible bickering to rest. Not peace, but a sword. Another irony: the modern, educated, upper-middle-class Bible Consumer often looks with pity (or worse) at the poor, ignorant knuckle-dragging KJV-only troglodytes, but then also dismissed the KJV as too difficult to understand, for a modern reader. The knuckle-dragging troglodytes seem to have no such difficulty. (I like building straw-men; not to scare away crows, but to summon them.)

"If the King James Version was good enough for Peter and Paul, it's good enough for me!" Actually, the KJV translators were not KJV-only. Besides, as you pointed out, they included the Apocrypha. I am happy they did! If I were a particular text only kind of guy, I would be Majority Text only, using the Robinson-Pierpont text. It's essentially what the Eastern Greek churches used, which I'm sure you already know. As for the KJV, I like how the Geneva Bible and New King James Translators translated Revelation 16:5 better than the KJV because Theodore Beza had a theory about how that passage was originally written that turned out to be wrong. There is no manuscript evidence for his edition of the Textus Receptus. All manuscript evidence definitely shows Beza was sincerely wrong. Despite the eclectic nature of the Textus Receptus editions of the New Testament, I still go back to the KJV. As much as I like the Coverdale Psalter and it's modern versions, I spent my early adulthood (actually age 17 to age 39) conditioned to love the KJV Psalter. In my twenties and early thirties, I attend churches that used the KJV Bible, though none were KJV only. We sang several choruses that are word for word verses from the KJV Psalter. I still sing those choruses. Once again, I find myself using either the 1928 BCP with KJV with Apocrypha, or the Anglican Office, supplemented with sermons and hagiography from the Anglican Breviary. The Saint Bernard Breviary is very beautiful. But, I probably won't but it. Still, one never knows ...

Most scholars agree that only James had a red letter edition, about which Martin Luther was jealous.
