My indoor Peace Lily turned 47 years old in 2022, purchased in 1975, longer than most marriages. It's lived through the dry heat of Southern California, the moderate climate of Northern California and the damp rainy cold winters of the Northwest. It once grew to a height of 2 1/2 feet, sprouting separate trunks from which leaves and berries grew. It couldn't support this weight at that height, so I propped it up with sticks, eventually needing to prune it back and shorten it. It has bloomed the white leaf lily stems many times, but we didn't touch its occasional small hard round red berries, since they might be toxic to humans. It went into shock during long distance moves, riding in its pot on the floor of my car. The changes into new climates and surroundings took 6-8 months for it to eventually recover. It's been re-potted into new larger pots many times, with new potting soil and drainage gravel at the pot's bottom, under which sits a large water collection saucer. It gets occasional fertilizer, and occasional water, especially when it starts to droop. It sits near the window, getting moderate light, and I open the blinds every morning just for it. Over the years, this plant's condition often reflected the same conditions in my own life. It is the only pet or plant in the house, and because it has been there through so many years of life's ups and downs, it has become a member of the family. Who would think that a simple house plant, with a normal lifespan of 3-5 years would live with you for nearly five decades? The question now, is whether or not it will outlive me?

I had to go on vacation for 3 weeks and that is definitely a no-no for a peace lily in terms of watering - my solution? I made a self-watering system like I have for my African Violets :-) Basically I pull a length of synthetic string through the soil and let that hang in a pot of water. Then the plant can soak up the amount of water it needs. It has worked so well for my peace lily, that is survived the 3 weeks and it has never drooped again since I got home :-)

Hey Harli, good tips! I think you've made a positive vote for acquiring a peace lily! One can find them at big box stores usually and they are put on clearance quite frequently. GOOD TIP to give them water without chemicals. Peace lilies love summer rain, so if you can, take your peace lily out when it rains so that they can be watered and their leaves will be washed. I water mine with fish tank water, too!

I've had tremendous luck with my peace lilies by adding to their pots some of my worm castings (I've done worm composting for many years!). In fact, I've never had healthier looking houseplants than since I started doing this. The worm castings gives me much better results than any other organic fertilizer I've used. I also get a few white "flowers" which are called brachts (I had to look it up!), and you're more likely to get them in high vs. low light situations. I've never attempted to propagate them, and will try to the next time I repot them. And you are right about them preferring airy soil, and watering no more often than once/week. And yes, I know they need to be watered if I notice any leaves start to droop. BTW, I just discovered your videos and find your way of presenting information endearing, entertaining, and informative. Quoting from a Reddit thread: "The NASA studies on indoor pollution done in 1989 recommends 15 to 18 plants in 6 to 8-inch- diameter containers to clean the air in an average 1,800 square foot house. That's roughly one plant per 100 square feet of floor space."
@googlepleaseleavemealonean61984 жыл бұрын
This is entirely false. This study is constantly misrepresented. Honestly, it's disgusting how badly this misinformation has been spread. Both the video and your comment are one of thousands of examples. This is a published study, I encourage you both to go read it for yourselves- it doesn't take that long, I promise... "Don't take my word for it." Don't take youtube or reddits words for it either. The study is fundamentally different than growing house plants in dirt. The study uses inorganic CARBON media [a filtering mineral!!!], suspended over a literal electric fan- which then circulates air over the carbon. The study showed that under these extremely specific non-real-world scenarios, that certain chemicals were reduced over time. And in fact, the amount of chemicals it reduced was so incredibly small and under such a small volume of air, that your entire living space would have to be completely filled with plants- literally every square foot- to have any remote measurable effects *in the real world*. You simply cannot take a highly controlled experiment and blanket apply it to the real world. It doesn't work like that... and that's not what the study concluded. Literally opening a window for 30 seconds filters your air exponentially more than a peace lily.

A self-watering pot works well, less watering required. I almost lost a very wiltered Peace Lily and brought it back to life using a teaspoon of seaweed solution in a litre of tepid water. My plants are positioned around 6 feet from a East facing large window, receiving plenty of indirect sunlight. In Australia, it's Spring approaching Summer and Peace Lillies love high humidity levels, so misting of the leaves replicates the humid air of the tropics.

@@Ms.S777 It's a Australian product called Seasol. Seasol products are available in a number of countries including New Zealand, USA, Vietnam, Malaysia, South Africa and Mauritius. I buy the 600ml bottle in Australia at Bunnings for around AU$6.60 and it lasts a long time, as you only need 20ml added to a watering can.

I water my peace lilly when it starts to droop a bit, I let it dry out before watering again. I keep mine by a north face window on a tall end table. It LOVES IT. Its flowered tons of times at least one or two flowers per couple of months.

Hey harli! I’ve had a peace lily for a few months and I’ve had trouble finding the correct lighting for it. Even in super low light it’s leaves are turning brown. Do you have any advice
@lansemclain61754 жыл бұрын
Was going to upload a pic but I guess I can't. You can actually keep peace lilies roots wet 24/7 and the do fine. I think what people call over watering is actually just having to much water in the soil. In a aquaponics set up the water free flows. Water in a pot with soil there is no flow so it stagnates. So it's probably not as much the plant can't handle a lot of water I think if you grow them in a pot and add to much water you grow things in the soil or create some sort of stagnant water the plant just can't handle.

I adopted a couple peace lily varieties from someone who worked in a windowless office. They were root bound, sun starved, and sitting in water inside pots with no drainage. I thought for sure there was no way I could turn them around and save them but both are thriving! They really are super hearty plants. One of them is so happy it put out three 'flowers' this summer and I have a question about them: They've turned from white to green and blend in with the rest of the foliage... should I prune off those flowers after they are no longer white?
@HarliG5 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's impressive! Good work (: If you want to cut the flowers you totally can once they are green. In the past I have just waited until it begins to brown to give them the snip!

Wilting causes stress! I don't want to bloom if I'm stressed out every two weeks! Water meters are very useful and easy on the budget. All plants do not want to be stressed!

Something cool: Peace Lilly spathes(name of the blooms) come in almost every colour! I have a lovely red one that I just repotted. Some other advice: Peace Lillies like humidity, so spritz them with water every now and again to give it a teensy bit of humidity. It'll also do good to make sure you clean it's leaves, they are huge and collect dust pretty easily -which can hinder photosynthesis. Also, when the blooms die you can cut them off where it connects to the leaf, just don't cut off the whole leaf 😂

Can you make a care video for goldfish plants? I got some weird variety from amazon and idk what it is but it’s more succulent and woody than the one my mom used to have and mine has yet to flower for me. I have propagated it and both the mother and baby plants have been growing for me but it definitely has some specific needs

@adamhummel32775 жыл бұрын
Nahrin Zannat I don’t know for sure, I’ve never had a peace lily. If I had to guess I’d say that it needs more water and/or humidity since leaf tips will be the first to dry and turn brown/black when that’s the case

I’ve offered my huge Peace Lily to every visitor to my home but no one wants it. It was fine in my last house but moved to a much smaller space so just don’t have the room for it - but it’s so happy I can’t let it die! I water only when the leaves droop and lose their shine, then I pour a couple of pints straight in and within an hour it’s perked back up. I also wipe the leaves with a clean damp cloth and cut off any weak or discoloured leaves. I also stand it 10 foot away from a sunny window and drastically cut it back when it gets massive. It has 2-3 flowers every couple of months and I’ve received the plant as a housewarming gift... in 2004

Oof I'm a little late but it depends how much or if they even put any chemicals in your tap water, so it depends really where you live and how the tap water is.

Hi, I have a question my mom owns a peace lily, recently the leaves started to become brown/black and wilted. The whole plant basically turn that way. You said it has to do with the sun. We usually had the plant placed in the bathroom window not alot of sun but it was growing just fine until she moved the plant to a more sun expose area. What should we do then when the whole plant is in this situation. If we cut/trim everything will it regrow itself or is there a better solution. My mom did divided them into 3 pots and trim the all the dead leaves and stem. The root is very healthy as well just the leaves that's turning black/brown

I have had the same peace Lily for over 10 years and I placed it in our sunroom which at times gotbvwey hot and this plant thrived. When I moved I out in in a less lighted room and it hasn't done well. I rook it out to my patio and it's doing great again.

When I started with plants I killed many over watering what iv realized is just watch them enjoy there beauty slight changes they are in need of something time for closer inspection I like as big a pot as possible it keeps things from changing to often n allows the plant room to grow n breath also I mix up my dirt with compost n tons of dried leaves which feeds the plant long term I collect fall leaves n store them dry so I always have some ready to feed my green babies they are the best fertilizer you can use n on the plus side they are free just some work collecting
@HarliG5 жыл бұрын
Yes! That is such a good system to follow! That's exactly what I have started doing as well. I am for sure going to collect leaves to use! Thank you so much. That is such good advice.
