You want to talk perfect casting? Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich were PERFECT! Ulrich was sleazy and creepy and the OBVIOUS choice for the killer, which makes the fake twist of his "murder" so shocking and sends you on a spiral questioning everything you thought you knew. And then Lillard just NAILS the insanity of Stu in the final act, managing to be both scary and absurdly funny, especially with the line, "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me!"

Btw having Drew Barrymore dying so quickly and being so famous was an homage to Janet Leigh dying so quickly in Psycho. Leigh was super famous as well.

Jamie Kennedy was chosen for the role of Randy because he would often improvise humor into his lines, which made director Wes Craven laugh 😂

To me, there hasnt been any better killers than Billy or Stu. They will always remain my top Ghostfaces. They played the roles perfectly!

Fun Fact. When Skeet through the phone, he hit Mathew by accident and Mathew just went with it. His line, "You hit me with the phone, you dick!", was improvised.

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen this movie, the opening always gives me chills. The dialogue is so good. “I wanna know who I’m looking at” “What did you say?” “I said I wanna know who I’m.. talking to” “That’s not what you said” “What do you think I said?” So creepy

Fun fact: Neve Campbell really did stab Skeet Ulrich with the umbrella and what's worse is that it was an old scar from a childhood surgery; that was a real pain reaction from him. 😬

Fun Fact: Stockard Channing as Rizzo in Grease was the oldest actor to ever play a high school student in a studio movie. She was 34. Skeet Ulrich and Matthew Lillard were both 26 at the time of filming.

I remember they said Drew Barrymore WAS supposed to be cast as Sidney but had scheduling issues and couldn't be there for full filming so she instead asked to be the first big kill of the film which gave them the idea to subvert the audience expectation since she was featured in all the trailers and promotional material. Funny enough Drew Barrymore made her comeback in acting with the first 15 minutes of this film because before this she was mainly known as a child actress.

Fun fact, the janitor who looks like Freddy Kruger is played by the director Wes Craven, who also made A Nightmare on Elm Street.

FYI after this movie the sales of Caller ID went triple and a lot of phone companies and police departments also added cellular phone ping signal towers in many areas to their headquarters computers. Just like after the movie Halloween where they added 911 calls (because back then there were no 911 numbers), this movie was responsible for having ID Caller and Star69 more common in households and offices.

A couple fun facts about the opening scene... When Ghostface breaks through the window and grabs Drew Barrymore, that's Wes Craven wearing the costume, and he startled her enough that she actually hit him in the face with the phone. They also neglected to disconnect the phones in the house where they were filming. So 911 got multiple calls of Drew Barrymore screaming, causing the police to show up on set.

A little backstory of how Scream got created. Kevin Williamson wrote the story, like Y'all said, originally titled Scary Movie and based the plot loosely on the 1990 case of the Gainesville Ripper. It was a string of murders in a small town... Then it was changed to "Scream" cause the Ghostface costume was a close resemble to the Scream painting. The Ghostface costume was originally going to be all white, but Wes Craven said it was too much like the KKK so he did the black robe with a white face. Kevin wanted to create a story that has horror but also with some comedy of making it a self aware with the horror universe. But also use a relatable story that truly happened as a baseline. So many Directors wanted to be a part of it. There was even a big bidding war. He chose Wes Craven cause he was the only one who truly understood the story and his vision. Kevin wrote majority of the franchise and Wes Craven directed all of the Scream movies except for "Scream 2022" and "Scream 6". He died after making the 4th. Yes, the title of "Scary Movie" ended up being used for the parody movies. The 1st Scary Movie was about Scream, Scream 2, I know what you did last summer, the Blair witch project, Urban Legend, the sixth sense, The usual suspects, the Matrix, a very brief Dawson's Creek. .

Fun Facts: - So when Tatum said to Dewey that the janitor is your superior, it's true cause, like Y'all said, the janitor at the school that was dressed as Freddy Krueger which was Wes Craven lol. - So before Scream came out, the caller ID was not popular at all. The caller I.D. sales in the U.S. tripled after Scream was released, lol. - Billy AND Stu were at Casey's and used their girlfriends as Alibis for being out. Stu was on the patio with Steve while Billy was in the front, tormenting her on the phone. The question about "Which door am I at" was a trick question. Stu ran to the front door to let Billy in. You could hear the front door open before she went outside through the kitchen. Also, when her parents got home, the front door was open. When her mom was hearing Casey breathing on the other end of the phone line, you can hear one talking to another saying "tree," and the phone ends. Also, when Steve was tied up, he was looking at both directions of the house. - Wes Craven lol to get his actors into character emotionally like Drew Barrymore (Casey) and Neve Campbell (Sidney) right before he start to film he would run up to them and tell them something terrifying. With Drew Wes Craven would tell her real-life stories of animal cruelty to bring out her emotions and then run off set and yell action, lol. - Roger L. Jackson was the voice of Ghostface for all of Scream movies. For every film, the actors were never allowed to meet him before or see him during filming, so that way, when they were on the phone with him, it would give them that real fear effect. Wes Craven always kept him hidden from the others to where they couldn't see him, but he was still able to see them. He also improved a lot of his lines as well. - Neve Campbell was originally going to say "no" to the film as she is especially afraid of horror movies. But when hearing her co-star Skeet Ulrich from The Craft (1996) was going to appear, she agreed. They did the movies back to back that same year. - Lol yes they casted Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and gave him the same kind of hair style cause of how close he looked like to young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street who also climbed in through a bedroom window. His last name, Loomis, is a reference to Dr. Loomis in Halloween. Also, when he climbed through her window, the first time, "Fear the Reaper," was playing. He climbed through her window to distract her and turned on her stereo to cover up the background noise of Stu kidnapping her dad. If notice he was wearing the same outfit at the end. - The news lady that was harassing Sidney "how does it feel to almost being butchered" is Linda Blair from the Exorcist. - If look really closely when Billy was "stabbed" in the bedroom, you can see Stu adding the fake blood onto the knife before wiping it off. -Casey's comment about Nightmare on Elm Street about how the first was good, but the rest sucked. It's because Wes Craven only did the first one and didn't direct all of the other ones, lol. -Kenny actually saved Sidney in his literal final moment AFTER his throat got slashed. He pointed to the back and told her "door" so she could crawl out. - Ghostface in the bathroom was a prank on Sidney it wasn't either Billy or Stu. - Rose McGowan(Tatum) was actually able to fit through the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door cause she kept falling out. Also, just before her head got smashed in, she herself added, calling out "mom," and Wes loved it and kept it in cause it gave her last moments of humanity. Rose also picked out her own outfits for her character. The jersey she wore with #10 was also a reference to Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street. - When Billy hit Stu in the head with the phone, it was an accident on Skeets part. The fake blood was so sticky and ended up hitting Matthew Lillard instead of the desk, and his "Oww You hit me with the phone D***" was a real reaction to it. Wes loved it as well, so he kept it, lol. Matthew also improved most of his kitchen scene with his lines, like with "Houston, we have a problem," "the peer pressure," and the comment about his parents going to be so mad, lol. - That WHOLE kitchen scene took 5 days to film because of the amount of high energy that was used as well with the fake blood (corn syrup dyed red). - Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard actually started dating while filming Scream and were together for almost 3 years. So that whole "I've always had a thing for you, Sid" was true, lol. He originally auditioned for Billy, but the casting didn't believe that someone like Neve/Sidney would date someone like him, lol. So he ended up getting Stu, and Skeet got Billy cause of his look alike to Johnny Depp. The funny thing is that even though the casting thought that about Matthew, they ended up dating real life anyway 😂 Skeet and Matthew talk about that often at the conventions, lol. - When Billy got stabbed with the umbrella the 2nd time, it actually hit Skeet, where he had heart surgery when he was younger, so that scream he let out was his real action to the pain. - Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. But she ended up changing her mind and went to Wes herself with an idea to have her as the open kill cause no one would expect it. Because it would show if they could kill off a huge star right off the bat, it would mean NO ONE was safe. Like Y'all also mentioned It was the BIGGEST surprise shock effect for the audience cause they assumed she would be the leading character due to playing into it with publicity. -Even though Billy was at Sidneys for the attack. It was actually Stu who she fought with when he was tripping up the stairs. You can hear ghostface saying "easy" "easy". The next day at the lockers, he was checking his face in Tatums mirror for any bruises, and when Tatum was hitting him with her sucker he says "easy" "easy. -Billy was always 1 handed with his killing if he had a knife, if didn't he resorts to choking except for Tatum he used the opportunity with the garage door. He gave a signal look to Stu at the front door that Tatum was dead. Stu uses both hands when using the knife and resorts to other tactics if he doesn't have a knife like the both times he fought Sidney. -Stu was the one that called Dewey about the abandoned car and also called Randy about the principal after the whole "I'll be right back." Billy killed the principal so they could use him as a deploy for later that night to get the rest of the guests to leave so the real party could begin. - Dewey was supposed to die in this one, but Wes Craven and everyone just loved David Arquette and how he played his character. They all fell in love with him, so at the end, Wes had Dewey do the thumbs up to show the audience that he survived. - The casting also wanted David Arquette to audition for the role of "Billy Loomis" but he requested on wanting to play "Dewey" cause he had a crush on Courtney Cox and the role of Dewey got to kiss her character "Gale", lol.

This is the one horror franchise I’m so glad I watched, I always put it off because I thought it was a cheesy comedy and I prefer like brutal horrors but that’s “scary movie” instead. Love these movies.

Scream came at a perfect time. It revitalised a genre that had lost its sheen through overstaturation in the 80s. I was 11 when it came out, absolutely loved and obsessed over it and it absolutely ignited my love of horror movies. So for that reason the whole franchise is beloved to me.

Two extra details of this movie: The short haired reporter who follows Sidney at school is actually played by Linda Blair (the actress who played the little girl in the Exorcist) and the guy who plays the "Freddy" janitor at school is actually the director, Wes Craven, who also wrote and directed the original Nightmare on Elm Street. These movies are filled with those little details and references that make them so great.

From a trivia site - Rose McGowan really could fit through the pet door. She had to be nailed in for her death scene and got bruises all over her body from hanging in the air in the door.

The one reporter who bombarded Sydney as she got to school… was Linda Blair. Who plays Reagan, the little girl from The Exorcist. Matthew Lillard was amazing. Loved how he portrayed Stu.

saw this in the theater with some friends, had an absolute BLAST. all of the easter eggs and poking fun at the genre while somehow still being a compelling plot is just genius. AND YOU GUYS MUST DO THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY ON HERE OMG

Easily one of my favorite horror franchise and one of the best slasher flicks ever made, so happy you guys reacted to it! Here’s a couple interesting fun facts from the end sequence: 1. Skeet Ulrich actually did hit Matthew Lillard with the phone because it slipped out of his hands because of how slippery they were from the fake blood. That’s Lillards actual reaction to getting hit lmao 2. When Sidney stabs Billy with the umbrella, Neve Campbell missed the chest protector Skeet was wearing on the second stab so that’s Skeet crying out in legit pain 😂 Oh and here’s a third interesting fact: the idea of Drew Barrymore playing Casey and being the opening kill was pitched and argued for by Barrymore herself. She was originally cast as Sidney but later suggested she be the opening kill to throw audiences off. She campaigned for this with Wes, Kevin, and the Weinstein brothers (yep, including Harvey, because they ran Muramax). She won them over and Neve Campbell was cast shortly thereafter as Sidney. And now the rest is history 👍🏻

Such an amazing movie, the killers reveal will always be my favorite scene but the most important thing to me is it has the legend Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher! i cant wait for him to go back to horror films with five nights at freddy's next halloween because man we need more of him in movies

One of my favorite movies!!! So glad you guys reacted to this one. A few things to point out that I just find fun - when the killer asks Casey (Drew Barrymore) which door he’s at, it’s a trick because there’s two of them so they’re positioned at teach door - it doesn’t matter which one she picks, there’s someone there The janitor dressed like Freddy Krueger was actually the director Wes Craven! The KZfaqr Zack Cherry does awesome videos where he theorizes who killed who and he makes really good points that make a lot of sense

This movie, and the whole franchise is just so well done. This one in particular. It's this great love letter to horror, it's also a really great meta presentation of horror, and it manages to be an actual horror film. They did a truly great job making these. They give you so many possible leads, some really obvious ones, you think you know the rules of horror, but the movie just stands that on its head.

Im so happy that you guys are watching Scream. Neve Campbell is my celeb crush. You can tell who the killer is by how they hold the knife. Billy uses one hand and tries to strangle his victims. Stu raises both hands above his head before killing his victims. Also the scene where Billy throws the phone and hits Stu wasn't part of the script. The scene where Sid hits Billy in the chest and when Billy screams that scream was legit because Sid accidentally hit a bit of the chest where Billy's actor had surgery.

on the note of skeet ulrich being "general dollar johnny depp" - that's part of why he was cast! everybody agreed he looked kinda like johnny. his first scene in this movie - entering sid's bedroom through her window - is a direct reference to johnny depp doing the same in a nightmare on elm street!

Happy Birthday to me! Love, love, love Scream. The movie that got me into horror...and I haven't stopped watching since. This was such a revelation for a sixth grader. Scary, thrilling, brutal, funny, witty, dramatic, sly. It just had a charisma I'd never seen before. Thought Rose McGowen and Matthew Lillard were like the coolest, quirkiest people I'd ever seen. I actually heard a bit about the movie before it came out. My babysitter's family owned Stu's house and she was there for some of the filming. She didn't know what it was going to be called, or really what it was about...she just said the cast of Party of Five was in it. Lol. Eventually she got unceremoniously kicked out because they found out she wasn't cast Anyways it was like a year and a half after it was released, and had become my favorite, that I figured out this was the movie she was talking about. That house is iconic now. Anyways...love this. So glad you guys are doing the whole series. Pretty much every single one of them is good...rare for a horror franchise. Thanks for doing this. Honestly, what made this movie a hit was the intro. That's what everyone talked about. Then, the plot twist, the guys stabbing each other and suddenly Sidney turns everything around.

Love the “Stu”/Matthew Lillard charactr ..Had some prety funny lines in the film

This movie first came out when I was in my early twenties. Not long after I saw it, someone called our house and I answered it. The man on the other end said “Hi. Who’s this?” I thought “Nope. Not doing it.” I said “You called here. Who are you?” It turned out to be my dad’s cousin, who I hadn’t seen in years and had never talked to on the phone. So it was all good, but this movie sure had a lasting impact on me!!

Saw this for the first time at an outdoor screening with friends. After the sex scene where Billy says "you still don't think it was me" someone in the crowd shouted something very spoilery like "It was you!" I was so angry for about 15 seconds before Billy is "killed" by ghostface and then was like, oh i guess that person was just joking! Only time Ive ever had the ending spoiled, then unspoiled, then realizing it actually was spoiled only after I got to experience it unspoiled

Ohh man, an absolute classic! The other movies in the Scream series are great, but this is the one I'll rewatch again and again. A great reaction! ❤

I just recently got around to watching this whole series and really enjoyed most of them. Skeet Ulrich was a surprise to me as I had no clue he was in this movie and had only ever seen him in the TV show Jericho before. (Also, I don't know if Jericho would gather enough attention to be worth you all watching, but I would love to see your reactions to it.) I think they do a great job of balancing the horror, the fourth wall breaking, and doing a lot with very little in terms of action and suspense. Looking forward to you all watching the rest of this series.

A few Easter Eggs: Linda Blair was the pushy reporter that says “People wanna know! They have a right to know!” Tatum and Dewey’s mom is the same actress who played McFly’s grandma in B2tF and Billy’s mom in Gremlins, and you can see Fonzie’s jacket hanging in Principal Himbry’s closet. I don’t know how true it is, but, like Quinn mentioned, it seems that Billy Loomis’ character is named after Dr. Sam Loomis in Halloween (seems completely plausible, given all the Halloween references)― Sam Loomis is also the boyfriend’s name in Psycho. And it’s so funny that you mentioned Skeet Ulrich being a Kirkland-version of Johnny Depp― that opening scene where he sneaks into Sidney’s room is very reminiscent of Glen, Depp’s character, sneaking into Nancy’s room in Nightmare on Elm Street.

Henry Winkler's role was the most fun for us old folks because we got to see the Fonz slicking his hair back AND his signature leather jacket when he snatches open his closet door. Plus, Wes Craven himself as "Fred", the Kuger-esque janitor. Fun fact: The original title of "Scream" was "Scary Movie", a moniker the Wayans brothers were glad to take and run with.

I've seen this film more times than I can count and it was only recently that I noticed, when they are all sitting by the fountain near the beginning, talking about Cece, both Billy and Stu are wearing the brown boots.

This movie was a game changer. All the marketing was set for Drew Barrymore to be the star of the film throughout. But she had a wonderful idea which was to say, what if we just kill me. Do the unexpected, and have the main star die in the beginning. That way you’ll know that no one is safe. It was a selfless thing to do, but it ultimately was brilliant.

This was my first reaction with you guys, and I'm stoked! This is my favorite franchise, and it was so fun to watch it with you!

This movie didn’t just revive the slasher movie genre, it defined 90s horror. As you said, 80s horror movies were defined by the known monsters, the Freddie Kruger, Jason and Michael Meyers’ characters who were not only known, they were superhuman and could survive anything thrown at them. Whereas 90s horror movies are known for the almost “who don-it” like killers where half the fun is figuring out who the killer(s) is/are, but they are also human; they can die, they stumble when they chase you, and can be clumsy with their weapons. If you like this type of tongue in cheek horror movie, highly recommend the tv series Scream. The first two seasons have the same cast and they have their own ghost face type killer and hometown mystery.

I saw that Drew Barrymore scene at way too young of an age, in an all glass conservatory, scarred me for years. Wouldn’t even entertain the idea of ever seeing a Scream movie again, thankfully I’m less of a scaredy cat now

I was never into slashers, but Scream was released the weekend I was born, and Wes Craven used to teach in my hometown before he decided to make movies, so I decided to give Scream a go. I loved it! The meta-humor and characters are just great! It's one of my favorite film series now. And it got me into horror movies.

this is one of the most important and revolutionary films to ever hit the horror genre and it singl;e-handedly revitalized the slasher film. one of the best films of the 90s, imo.

The Scream franchise is one of the most consistent horror franchises in my opinion. Even the worst in the initial franchise (I'm looking at you, Scream 3. I love you, but you're a mess) is a great time. The writing is always excellent and Sidney Prescott is my favorite final girl of all time. While I don't love Scream 5 and 6 as much as the early movies (for several reasons), I can admit that they mostly succeeded in keeping the franchise fresh.

As a long time horror fan...this movie ticked all the boxes and then threw in some twists. All the red herrings, the possibility of the main star dying, the easter eggs...just love this series.

What i love about scream is that its not just a killer, it could be anyone, that's what made it such a tense film, you're constantly paying attention to everyone which leads to some pretty scary moments.

The Johnny Depp Skeet Ulrich resemblance was completely unintentional on Wes Cravens part In an interview once when asked about it he said he hadn't noticed It was just a happy coincidence that made for a perfect homage

Random fun fact. When this movie was released on VHS, box was labeled as Rated R, but it was the NC17 version of the film. No one really knows if it was an accident or done on purpose, but that version was never released again on the dvd, blu ray or 4k version. It's slightly more graphic.

The first time I saw this I was like 11 yrs old, and had just had my leg ripped open by a giant hook (long story). I was at my aunt's house and ended up wrapping my leg up with toiler paper and duct tape like a mummy, and sat on her couch and this movie came on tv. It really helped distract me once the numbness went away and the pain started.

I think I'm the only one who thinks Scream 2 is just as good as the first one. Those two I make time to watch every Halloween.

I was born July 4th 1998, so I recognize everything in the movie as fairly normal, my landline was wired for a little but became one of those none wired ones. I used phone books to call friends and hang out with the kids on my street while biking around. So my young childhood was early 2000s (which is really what people remember the 90's as). It would be really weird to interact with people that don't know what VHS is or how revolutionary a CD is (which are now basically obsolete). I think being born after 2003 (maybe 2005) is about when the internet kids start, I eased into the internet around when I was 12 or so, didn't have a cellphone until 7th grade really, even then I barley used it and only got a smartphone in highschool. Wild times. Now when I write stories or make comics I like to place them before smartphones and the widespread use of cellphones. I like that time more, also easier to write for. However I'm actually afraid that stories like that will lose popularity as people will no longer be able to relate or understand a world pre-internet. A time before cellphone reception was a problem and so on. I often watch you guys while I'm doing commissions or drawing/writing and listening to you guys joke about tech and stuff reminded me of all this. I'm probably in that last batch that knows what you mean (not sure when the cut off is, like I said probably 2003?). Not too long until a stories placed in the past are similar to fantasy stories.

Also I love the fact that ghost face did take a good amount of shots and was very clumsy because, at the end of the day, they were just teenagers. So I thought they did a really good job with that. That opening with Drew Barrymore is still one of the most brutal movie deaths I’ve ever seen. The only thing I can think of that affected me more was that girl who got her head bashed in on Deadwood - I was in the middle of a binge but stopped watching for weeks after that.

The reporter asking Sidney how she felt almost being killed when she arrives at school, is Linda Blair from The Exorcist!

Another cool Easter egg… the reporter who harassed Sidney when she got out of the car is Linda Blair… who played Regan in the Exorcist.

If you guys are down for more self-aware horror, I highly recommend Cabin in the Woods. It’s a really interesting examination of common horror tropes. I’m a huge fan of the horror genre, and I can confidently say that it’s my favorite horror film in the world― third favorite film overall.

It's funny how closely the scary movie parody follows to the actual scream movie lol, I thought they made up a lot of the corny lines they threw in that parody, but most of them were actually in scream lmao.
