Rotator cuff self massage is an effective technique to lessen shoulder pain and other associated shoulder injury symptoms. Athletes who participate in overhead sports are at particular risk at injuring their rotator cuff and developing shoulder impingement syndrome. Long term poor posture also plays a role in straining the rotator cuff; rounding of the shoulders places strain into the shoulder joint, making arm movements more challenging to the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff self massage is important to keep your shoulders healthy. Rotator cuff strains and shoulder impingement syndrome are two of the conditions that we treat regularly at our San Diego, Sports injury clinic.
With self massage techniques, it is important to only work into the muscles; stay away from bony areas and nerves. The rotator cuff muscles are small and relatively thin so a mild to moderate amount of pressure is sufficient.
For a shoulder rehab program, we like to start with simple exercises like this one. It helps reduce pain/tightness, while improving flexibility and mobility which improves symptoms of shoulder impingement. Consistency is key so be sure to perform this exercise regularly when starting off. As tissue quality improves from the rotator cuff self massage, strength exercises are incorporated to improve stability at the shoulder. The stronger and more coordinated the shoulder musculature is, the less likely you are to develop rotator cuff strain and shoulder impingement syndrome.
