Peanuts have multiple phenols. Phenols are compounds that act as protective agents to plants. They are known to absorb light in the ultraviolet spectrum.

This absolutely blew my mind when I first discovered it a couple years ago. Besides this, even more mindblowing is that common table sugar and ice, WATER ICE, are also phosphorescent at liquid nitrogen temperatures. You can see it being demonstrated by a guy on here called "Ty Buckley". It's incredible, but needs deep UV like from a germicidal bulb.
@Jordan-rb28
@Jordan-rb28 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by deep UV? Is this UVA or UVB? UVA is the most basic kind which is what 95% of all UV lights are while UVB is what the ozone filters most of and can give you sunburns in seconds.
@Muonium1
@Muonium1 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jordan-rb28 I mean far UV, ie. UVC. You need the 254 line from mercury and MAY even need the super deep 185 line from a germicidal bulb without titania dopant in the quartz envelope to block that line and prevent ozone formation, it's not entirely clear.
@tmarbut
@tmarbut 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, I just tried this test with "cookie butter" which contains no peanuts, and it also glows in the dark (at room temperature). You can add that to your list of things that are phosphorescent. It's mostly wheat flour, sugar, and vegetable oil. "Cocoa Almond Spread" also glows - it's mostly sugar, palm oil, and almonds.
@Muonium1
@Muonium1 2 жыл бұрын
@@tmarbut I have since this post made another discovery....the glowing chemical is almost definitely coming from Maillard reactions of browning or toasting, it's not an intrinsic chemical of the plant. Take a plain piece of bread and see if it phosphoresces with a 405nm laser. Toast it lightly to moderately. It now is phosphorescent. Toast it more. The phosphorescence is reduced. It's a new chemical formed in foods that are browned and toasted. Now....which one
@tmarbut
@tmarbut 2 жыл бұрын
@@Muonium1 interesting - I noticed that in my mixed nuts, the cashews, almonds, and macadamia nuts glowed much more brightly than any of the butters. A store-bought chocolate chip cookie also glowed slightly, but nothing was close to the cashews and macadamia nuts. I kind of thought that at least the macadamia nuts would have been raw (they have no visible browning), but they're likely toasted. Given your suggestion about toasting, I think I'll try a slice of bread before/between/after a couple rounds of toasting and see if I can determine a change.

@@CJT3X fr, water in and of itself is a chemical, those people are so foolish, sometimes we need chemicals to have safe and healthy food, especially in a modern industrialized world with increased pollution and advanced health science

If you store too many pistachios in a large pile they are at risk for spontaneous combustion due to the high fat and low water content that creates a self heating effect when insulated properly.

lol, its funny cuz i was messing around with fluorescents today cuz i had finished building a decent 365nm flash light thingy, tho tonic water glows the best with its bright blue glow. also maybe the glow in the peanut butter is cuz of some chemical added in it

i have such a 365nm flashlight with filter screen to block all possible visible light emitted, it's a really fun toy.. check out ruby, it's the most beautiful red you will have ever seen.. and take it with you whenever you go into nature, the more moist the better, fungi are insane, a lot of plants to have cool things when you take the time to observe in a local macro way, insects are also shiny and river lobsters are white, scorpions to but i live way north in europe so haven't got there yet.. one of the most insane ones i saw was a toad, psychedelic patterns all over it's face pfff just a whole other world opening.. and you can give someone the creeps for germs by showing how dirty their bathroom and kitchens are..

@@ShahZahid i have two types of ruby in my mineral collection, both are rough uncut and one i extracted from indian granite, that one is better quality and shows the amazing red under UV 365nm i talked about, you can make your own ruby by the way with a microwave oven, there's a cool video from nighthawkinlight if i remember correct.. i don't know the wavelength but he mentioned it in that video.. cheers
