This week I try my hand at porting and polishing the peanut port heads for my big block 454 budget build. There is definitely a learning curve to it, but hopefully it'll pay off in the end!

I love the idea of putting BBC in Steve and taking Steve back on tour. IMO BBC is the best sounding engine their is with headers and a good exhaust.

You should take the time to watch David Vizard porting videos. It's amazing what can be achieved at home with a little knowledge, ambition and time.👍

I've done some porting and flow testing on some peanut port heads. I did what you what you did on the mouth of the port and gained. I think it was 8-10 cfm. the porting I did wasn't fully realized until I had a valve job. I really noticed a big difference when I put 2.190 valves in along with the porting, 279 cfm at .500 lift. I opened up the runner a little and did quite a bit on the bowl and little on the short turn, though. you've probably seen it too on eric weingartner's channel, a gasket match in a case like this is worth some power too, on top of the gasket match. thanks for the video, looks like a fun project.

I really enjoy watching Weingartener's channel, a lot of it is over my head but he has a ton of good info on there! I may not have shown it on the video, but I did end up taking a fair bit of material off the runners as well. These heads will eventually be replaced with a good set of aluminum, but figured I'd try to squeeze as much out of them as I can.

Gasket matching on intake port does nothing for performance. It's only going to inhale what it can take whatever the valve/bowl will allow. Another point of wisdom is, smaller ports have more efficiency per duration of cam. Higher rate of efficiency per cam RPM range. With same exact setup and larger ports, you will lose some percentage % of bottom end torque and response. People always tend to go with larger port heads because in their minds they look impressive being all hogged out etc. But your losing power unless you got the volumetric cubic inches to make them neer max efficiency.
@reloadingfun
@reloadingfun 2 ай бұрын
@antilaw9911 Well, when the air is hitting a wall, it affects flow adversely. so, doing a gasket match in this instance does help. I've seen it on the dyno. a peanut port head holds a 454 back in any combination, so there is your volumetric cubic inches.

Many of us are like your disclosure said. But we have our favorites. Went to the wrecking yard. A clean orange 🍊 big block was in a wrecked tow. Truck. Bought the engine. Generation 4. Peanut port heads have 2.19 valves. Is that what your heads have ?
@goodenuffcustoms
@goodenuffcustoms 8 ай бұрын
I have no clue what size the valves are. I would assume the same. It is a gen 4 motor as well.

I'm guessing you got the 22cc dome pistons. With a steel shim head gasket that gets you to 9.58:1 compression, not bad. What are you using for a cam?
@goodenuffcustoms

Honestly, I’m not sure which size I ended up with. Shopped via cash available! I know they are domed, they’ll be better than stock and they were only about $250 for the set. One day it’ll get a real build, bored and stroked, good heads and a cam that’ll make it all come together. Right now it’s getting a thumper cam just for the chop. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@andysteele4056
@andysteele4056 Жыл бұрын
@@goodenuffcustoms Oh, good choice. The small thumpr cam would be great for what you're building. Nice tight lobe centers to crutch the small-valve heads and relatively low compression. Should have killer mid-range torque and sound awesome. The 2 bigger thumprs might be too big and make the engine soggy and not too fun on the street. Lovin' the build.

@@goodenuffcustoms why not just throw a bumpity cam in the small block that's already in the truck? I'm afraid you'll regret having that big block in there when you're sitting in line for an hour or more in the heat to get in the venues on the Power Tour.

Dude, if you don't have turbulence, you done F'ed something up bigtime!! Turbulence is your friend in a combustion chamber! Also, you DO NOT want your intake runners super smooth, it's best to leave them with a rough finish for atomization. Combustion chambers and exhaust ports are another story, it's fine to "polish" those.
@goodenuffcustoms
@goodenuffcustoms 10 ай бұрын
The intake is still rough and should have plenty of turbulence to help with atomization.

People are sleeping on BBC peanut port heads. They are fantastic on a street driven heavy car/truck. They make tons of torque and that means they are great for doing burnouts! They don't make power much beyond 5500 rpm so, they aren't great for pure drag racing. But, I know a guy running deep into the 11's with them on a old RV 454 in a 69 Camaro. I wouldn't go crazy porting the peanuts either. Just bellmouth them as seen here. You want to keep intake port velocity high. Doing the combustion chambers is OK but, won't make any power. If you do work in the chamber, I'd put the valves back in to protect the seats.

From everything I’ve read and seen you are right on the money about the peanut ports. I’m definitely not taking this motor past 5000-5200 rpm just to be sure I don’t float the stock valve train. Thanks for the info!
