71 years ago today........
These are three separate broadcasts from Washington DC, New York NY, and Honolulu HI as the day unfolded into the evening of December 7th 1941. You could imagine how much different it was back then in particular the way we absorb current events. There was no television, no internet, no PC's, laptops, ipads or iphones.
........Only the radio....telephone...and the next days newspaper.
The first set featured is a 1939 Zenith 9-S-367 console. The second is a 1935 GE M-61 tombstone, and the third is a 1936 Zenith 5-S-29 tombstone.
This video is intended to serve as an educational and historical documentary, these broadcasts are in the public domain and fair use is implied.
Hosted by Namnoiz. Compiled and edited by Relix Worx.

Imagine being a parent, sitting at home, with a son who was stationed at Pearl. How long would you be left waring for news? It had to be gut wrenching.

I have a 1939 Zenith (same dial, less tone and station buttons than yours.) I often play 1930s & 40s radio shows through the "Television" sound input! Using a real radio of the right era makes the experience more "real", I also have a dvd player attached to a 1960 Magnavox b/w TV. (best way on earth to watch "Peter Gunn" episodes! nice vid!

Thank you for posting this. This is the finest assembly of the broadcasts from Dec. 7th. The radios are simply amazing, seeing I collect them my self and watching these with the broadcast playing is so well done... I can't express enough how this great this is. Thank you for posting and always remember Dec. 7th '41.

There was TV in a few major American cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, but it was so ineffectual and technology so limited that on 12/7, most TV stations merely rebroadcast radio broadcasts from their associated radio networks such as this audio here, perhaps with an on-camera announcer sitting next to a radio on his desk, in the TV studio. Reportedly, there were live news and discussion shows on TV in the days immediately following Pearl Harbor, but this didn't last long as the FCC ordered all TV stations off the air. Little or no evidence of these 12/7 TV broadcasts (and post- 12/7) exist, other than written accounts.

There is no awakening needed chief... There are no eminent attacks from Japan. They would literally sign their own death certificates. American military forces are drastically different from 1941 in the sense that we could dominate anyone through Naval, ground, and air power. If that didn't work, we could nuclear bomb them into annihilation. It is good to remember and document history, but your idiotic use of the exclamation point is exhausting to the point. Stop it...

OK, first of all I wasn't referring to the Japanese per se. I was talking about the US being prepared for any future attack on our country. Oh, and by the way Tav, the word is imminent not eminent, no need to capitalize naval and last, just for you Tav...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I think of September 11, 2001 and how we would want it to be a bad dream; I can imagine what Americans were thinking. “This has to be a bad dream.” Especially because there was no visual for all this, it had to be hard to take in.

My mother said it came as a great shock to everyone. They had blackouts and curtains at sunset during the early days of the war. Her and her parents lived hundreds of miles inland. The two Japanese ambassadors, found this out in a documentary years ago, were lied to by their own government.

Hey, John, I'm back on the internet. Got my kidney stone taken care of...I'm feeling better. Just thought I'd pop in for your latest. This is a very interesting video. Gives me new insight into what really happened on December 7th. I love the 40's and the World War II period, yes, it was a turbulent decade, but I also find this decade fascinating. Hope you have a great holiday! :) Janet

Everyone needs to visit Pearl Harbor at least once. We took our children and grandchildren several years ago. The “historical society” has “redone” the exhibit(s) and site. Not as well done as the original…the new one is “slick”…but is still a spot that EVERY American needs to visit.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE THE LONG VERSION OF THIS BROADCAST WENT. IT FEATURED THE SAME RADIO IN THE IMAGES. THERE WAS A FOOTBALL GAME, SOME CLASSICAL MUSIC AND REPORTS FROM MANILA ECT. ECT. MAYBE IT'S JUST GONE LIKE 'THE FONZ' WITH ALL OF HIS CBS RADIO NEWS. I LIKE LISTENING TO THIS STUFF LATE AT NIGHT SOMETIMES WHEN I'M READING. MY DAD AND UNCLE WERE IN THE WAR IN THE ATLANTIC AND NORTH AFRICA RESPECTIVELY

The Japanese noted they used KGU's signal to make their way to Honolulu and their targets. The initial fear was the Japanese fleet was heading east toward the West Coast, and a number of stations there were ordered off the air so they couldn't be used as homing beacons. As always in such situations, some initial reports turn out not to be accurate, and were discarded as they were disproven.

There were false claims of German aircraft taking part. No idea why as all were Japanese Navy aircraft. My parents and relatives didn't want to talk about ww2. So I bought books when I got to be a teenager so I could learn about it. One family member was in the US Army in the Philippines when Japan attacked. An uncle was in Patton's Third Army in North Africa and Europe.
