I admit it, what's to say I'll relive it, without pain Backstreet lover on the side Of the road I got a bomb in my temple that is gonna explode I got a .16 gauge buried under my clothes, I play Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Oh try and mimic, what's insane I am in it, where do I stand? Indian summer I hate the heat I got a backstreet lover on the passenger seat I got my hand in my pocket so determined discreet, I pray Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Once upon a time I could control myself Once upon a time I could lose myself Once upon a time I could love myself Once upon a time I could love you Once Once Once Once Once Once Yeah yeah yeah yeah

I love this song still. Still one of my all time favorites. At the time, I was in a failing relationship that I was struggling to make work because I'd been taught at a young age that you go to college, meet a guy, get a degree in nursing or teaching (just in case he died -- never divorce -- and you needed to support your kids) but stay home and be supported. You'd be together for the rest of your life. *Never! Never divorce!* So even though the relationship was bad, I still fought to keep it together. My excuse was, besides the earlier indoctrination, I was young and stupid. I no longer involve myself in these types of relationships, preferring to be alone. *So!* To make a long story short, the line "I'm still alive" spoke to me very strongly. While I was mourning the end, I realized I was still alive, and as long as I was alive, there was hope for better. Not what Eddie Vedder meant when he wrote it, but that was my take as well as many, many others. He gave us hope to go on. Thank you for that Eddie, even if we misinterpreted. ❤

A question for anyone who sees this: Do you know someone/anyone who hates this album? Just curious, as it's widely regarded as one of the greatest ever recorded and, for me, it's one of the best I've ever heard. Today, I realized that somebody close to me absolutely hates the album. I get that people like what they like but I'm struggling with this one. It's weird that a music lover wouldn't like this, right?

I've met a fair amount of people who dislike this album as well as every single seminal album from the Grunge Big Four. Because let me tell you, as someone who lives in Seattle, nobody craps on the rock music that 90's Seattle created than a millennial aged edgelord who was still rubbing beans into their high chair and singling along with Barney the Dinosaur when Lane Staley was vomiting his soul on stage to other disenchanted youth about being dopesick, in a toxic relationship, broke and sleeping on the street. The kid who wasn't quite old enough in 1992 to pick up a guitar of their own or lived enough personal trauma in a small town with a hard to pronounce, Native tribal name, to appreciate the fact that regular dudes and chicks jamming in garages and woodsheds all over Washington State within a 100 mile radius of Seattle (and beyond!) were creating music that resonated with people the whole world over. Riffs as drenched in 9 months of rain, train hopping, heroin abuse and seasonal affective disorder as they were traditional blues licks and the very heavy metal it helped destroy for a time. No. Nobody trashes Pearl Jam or Nirvana more than that kid from the Pacific Northwest who just hates on it because it was somehow popular when they were a kid. Maybe their older brother grew his hair long and ended up splitting town, now forever estranged from his family. Or maybe big bro OD'd and is long cold and dead, buried in a Bremerton or Tacoma cemetery. But maybe... Just maybe, that kid should give these classics an earnest chance and really listen to the heart and soul played behind the anguish. Maybe they'll find some records as timeless and appealing as anything Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath, Hendrix, The Doors or Bowie ever pressed into vinyl..... Just maybe. ;)

i LOVE the crash cymbal when Eddie sings "gonna explode," in the pre-chorus. It's a crash cymbal on the 3rd beat of the measure, which is a highly unusual place to crash but extremely effective here at propelling the groove and accentuating what Eddie is singing about (a bomb in his temple that's about to go off).

I come back to this album after 18 years. Back then I was typical "angry" and "rebelious" teenager, now I'm adult, with "live problems"- my chronic illness, my parents poor health, temporary unemployment, lack of money (you know, doctors...)...I feel Eddie anger even more now. I forgot how good is to scream to the music which is so raw, true, simple. My favourite album to listen in my vehicle

I remember I borrowed the CD from a friend in 1992 or 1993. Then on my way back home I slipped with my skateboard 'cause the road was wet and slippery, so the jewel case broke. I always remember this when I hear a song from this album and it feels like it was just an hour ago. Brains are funny things when it comes to music and memories.

I was in my early teens, the exact time is unimportant. While all my friends were losing their collective $#!& over Nirvana (and, to the band's credit, understandably so), I was tripping on the tracks these hometown heroes had put on the air. I got my hands on the cassette, and I could've just as easily cued up my favorite songs off the album, but what would be the fun in that? I was not prepared. While songs like Jeremy, Black, and Evenflow had resonated with me, this song, this most epic of opening tracks, transported me. While I'd recognized the influence of those other songs as being the urban decay I had experienced in my early childhood, this track recontextualized the entire experience, painting my city not as mere concrete and steel, but as a fallen kingdom, a once-fantastic realm somehow stripped of its magic and glory - and these musicians and their ilk, as the bold adventurers seeking to restore it against long odds and dark forces. To understand the rest of the album - indeed, perhaps the rest of the grunge era, and all that has come since - one must first understand this song, a fitting prelude to all the other tragic stories yet to be told. Stories that are far from over...
