5 years sober from heroin. Today I am employed and insured. This song makes me grateful I changed my life around before it was too late, and gives me hope for those that haven't chosen the same path yet. I have 8 friends/loved ones that I was on a day to day speaking basis for a while at one point in my life with, that have died from drugs.

This song, and Eddie, changed my life. I am forever grateful for Pearl Jam. I was a lost teen when this came out and it gave me the fuel to persevere. I'm still here when I had just about given up. Thank you guys. Still haven't seen you live, but that's okay. You saved me decades ago. Forever grateful.

@@hannahmitchell87 This song is about him beeing told by his mother that his real father is dead, and the man he thought was his father was just a random guy she met after his father. So he's kinda bitter against his mother in this song. So I'll guess he felt that was like a curse to make a popular song about his bad mother.

I used to know a guy in college who was a huge Pearl Jam fan. We used to have a lot of petty arguments and banter as I was really into Nirvana. We became quite close and had a lot fun times together. Eventually drifted apart due to various reasons. A few years after we graduated, he killed himself. He had so much to live for and yet one night decided to end it all, for reasons only known to him. I have never been a Pearl Jam fan but I come back to this one every now and then to keep my memory of him alive. It was one of his favourites - along with Rearview Mirror. I hope he's found peace.

When this song came out, I was going through a difficult time coming to terms with having an physically, mentally and emotionally abusive father, and a mother that did not show much love and affection. I remember listening to this over and over again with my headphones on full volume, and it was the first song ever in my life that I felt so connected to. I guess you can put your own interpretation to it! Possibly the most emotionally intense song ever and the guitar at the end is unbelievably intense. Thank god for music!

1993. I'm 10 years old, and I'm just getting home from school one spring afternoon. My mom's younger sister, my Aunt Diane is sitting in the living room, and I'm a bundle of joy in seeing my aunt in the first place but low & behold she brought with her something special. She'd gone to Music Plus+ when I was in school, and came back with a brand new copy of Pearl Jam's debut _Ten_. I tore open the packaging, popped the CD into the stereo, and was taken away to a better world with the first riff from *this* very song. That's possibly one of the happiest memories of my life. In 1997, I lost my mother to cancer when I was only 15...my aunt hasn't spoken to me since I was 23 because of a falling out over my leaving the church of Jehovah's Witnesses. That was a decade ago. *Fuck I love this song. It fills me with life, and with hope.*

I was born in ‘71. You’re right. The soundtrack to my late teens, early 20’s had incredible power and emotion. And memories of those who are no longer here to reminisce.

This track is actually based around Vedder learning as a teenager that the man he thought was his father was actually his stepfather, and that his biological father was dead. “He’s still dealing with love, he’s still dealing with the death of his father. All he knows is ‘I’m still alive’ … That’s totally out of burden,” Vedder once explained to Rolling Stone.

Heard a lot of Pearl Jam growing up, at one point they were severally over exposed but even the band themselves slowed down and that was a smart move. When your a kid hearing this you love the melody but don’t really understand the depth of the songs yet. Than your in your 30s and so much shit has happened to You and around you that you scream this song at the top of your lungs. It’s like you understand it in a whole new way. Pearl Jam is just one of those bands that just hits you different. They are great story tellers and the emotion is poetic and thought provoking. You feel everything when you hear their songs. They have substance and depth. That is really hard to find in most rock bands. I’m so glad I have a plethora of bands to listen to come back to earth. So many good ones in the 80s and 90s. I don’t know what it is about those decades but it’s like God himself was there telling us some tragic, horrific, beautiful, inspiring and magical things that are hard times ever forget.

When you realize the frontmen of Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Temple of the Dog, Mother Love Bone, Gruntruck, Velvet Revolver, Mad Season, Blind Melon, Screaming Trees, Audioslave, & Linkin Park are all deceased…. But Eddie Vedder is still alive 🙏🏾 (I am aware some of these groups had the same frontman)

And that's just the singers. There were so many other musicians who died, but aren't talked about as much because they weren't the frontmen. Van Conner from Screaming Trees, for example, died 2 days ago.

this song is so clean man idk and it is very interesting how most people see the lyrics in an uplifting way, especially the chorus, yet the real meaning is very dark. the lead singer obviously talked about how he felt the song was a curse and when he started seeing people jump around and singing the chorus almost like a celebration he felt that the curse was lifted. the song is about his own experience of finding out his 'father' was actually his stepfather and his real father had died. this to me is the beauty of a well written song: people can interpret it however they like and it even helps them get through rough stretches in life

Pearl Jam lyrics like this or Yellow Ledbetter are always so insanely deep that you have to read up on them to find out the whole story. That's what a good song is.

Since I've always had top marks at lyric's interpretation here's my take: Mother: "Your real daddy was dying _I never told you before because I don't care about you, but you have no right to complain, because_ you're still alive." Him: "Do I deserve to be? Is that the question? _at this point I really don't care whether I'm dead or alive._ who answers, who answers? _I don't know how to deal with it_ [then in an angry voice] I'm still alive _I know I'm going to carry this with me, but I will survive_ And let's be honest: Eddie Vedder himself should have realized that his angry 'I'm alive' made this a survivor anthem. I was worried about the physical abuse part though, that was back in 1992/93 when the story about the song wasn't yet out. But since Pearl Jam wrote a lot of songs about other people's stories I assumed this song was about someone else, turns out I was partly right.
