As we dream of turquoise lagoons, of limpid ocean floors where multi-coloured fish brush against you, this film transports you to the South Pacific, where man and nature collaborate closely to give birth to a fascinating gem : the pearl.
Gifted with great dexterity men graft nuclei into mother-of-pearl. After patiently tending to them for two years, the perliculturists retrieve a pearl from the creature’s flesh.
This wondrous animal-mineral creation takes us to a fascinating underwater world, at times infested with sharks.
This film will take you to the impenetrable and inscrutable world of perliculturists. You will fly in private planes, the very same ones which transport the pearls extracted over several days in atolls lost in the middle of the Pacific ocean.
You will see the sorting of pearls, by size, by quality, by colour, before they are auctioned all over the world.
For you La Maison Chanel will open the doors to its history and its contemporary pearl creations.

What a detailed information on cultured pearls! Admirable! Highly informative & a joy to watch. Unlike other videos on Tahitian pearls, you are so frustrated watching them talk & talk without detailing & showing on camera what they are talking about. Others should learn from this video about Tahitian pearls!

Living creatures being used as breeding machines trapped in tight steel wire forever. It's their only purpose in life, all for you. Why do we treat God's creatures like this? It's a horrible industry.

I am stunned at how 1950s the narrative. It wasn't discovered until the 16th century? In the Oriente? Come now, surely someone involved with producing this has some kind of modern education. Tahiti was settled by ocean going pacific peoples around the time of the late roman empire. Europeans were very late to the table.

@tanyajuli, you are absolutely right! Tahiti was discovered by the brilliant Polynesian navigators ca. 2000 years ago! However, the narrator doesn't say that Tahiti is in the Orient. The Orient is mentioned when the human fascination by pearls is discussed.

It is reassuring to see that those who farm, create and process the pearls also love them. Our jewelers only think of money. There is no inherent appeal for the gem itself.

Truly, the most stunning and classic of all for the mineral deposits found thus far on earth. Positively proven aphrodisiacs for women and the surest sign of taste and a discerning eye among men. Perfection incarnate to the most powerful gem brokers in the business. Keep your emeralds and sapphires the only mineral in the same class may possibly be white jade. Diamonds cannot even compare to the unquestioned majesty of a set of 10mm tricolor opposing shade pearl's suspended four inches above ANY woman's breast cleavage.
