Thanks. After a good surf on internet you are the first one I see that has shown the real visible difference between an 1:87 and 1:76. No really obvious if nobody shows these together. Thank you.

The 50p piece is very helpful for 'guaging' the actual size of the model too.

Thank you very much. This was actually quite helpful with the important questions I've had lately on just which scale to bother with. Choose unwisely, then we end up purchasing duplicates, or even end up with two full sized RR boards. Fine for people who live in mansions and can afford that much of the hobby. I want to focus on craft quality and a diorama that's pleasant to both look and and play with.

Thank you, Even know its been a dream to build my own railway setup for many years I am just getting started so I am very much a novice and this video explained all the sizing questions I needed to know. Even know I would love to have a bigger Loco size with the room I have available to me I think I am best sticking to the 00 Gauge set I bought so I can fit more in.

It's strange though... Even though OO is the larger scale, when I put my APT-E (OO) by Rapido/Locomotion National Railway Museum in an adjacent track to my Amtrak Metroliner (HO) by Walthers, they're both *_exactly_* the same height and width--you'd never know by looking that the models are two different scales (in fact, the Metroliner is a mm wider and a hair taller than the APT-E [though the schnoz on the APT-E, wow!]). Same thing when I put my Colas Class 56 (OO) by Hornby next to my SD-70 (HO) by Athearn, the SD-70 dwarfs the class 56! _P.S. Don't ask me why I'm running British and American trains together on my layout :-p_

OO was adopted for UK model railways so that the models would be closer in size to HO models as UK railways have a smaller loading gauge than Continental Europe or the US.

You missed some other gauges: - TT is 1:120 scale and it once was very popular East to the iron fence in Europe. It uses the same gauge as 0e and H0m (12 mm). - Z is 1:220 scale and it uses the 6 mm gauge which is the same as H0f, TTe and Nm. (f is for gauges equal or lower than 1 ft 11+5⁄8 in) For the metric people: - Without a suffix all scales represent 1435 / 1520 mm - 'm' represents meter gauge - 'e' represents 760 mm gauge - 'f' represents 600 mm gauge

I kind of wish that the numbers were less arbitrary, for example I think that 1;80 or 1;100 would make a good HO/OO instead of 1;87 and 1;76. Maybe standardizing O into 1;40 or 1;50 would also be good. Also getting rid of different scales between British and Oversees varieties would help.

Trix make a class 66 with sound and DCC which I believe is the one in the video. It is HO scale 1:87 . I have now change from EM scale as I don't have to build my own points and modify locomotive and rolling stock. It is a shame there is not more British rolling rolling stock available in HO scale .

I like that you define the difference between gauge and scale, BUT you quickly mix the terms again as you talk about the different “scales”. You should always say “N scale”, “OO scale” etc.

Gauge and scale are two different things! You can have different scales running on the same gauge such as N gauge which varies between 1/148, 1/150 and 1/160 scale but all run on the same gauge track! A typical example of this is in Japan where their shinkansen are 1/160 scale but all other trains are 1/150 scale but both run on the same track. To make it even more confusing real shinkansen have wide gauge bodies but run on standard gauge bogies (apart from the mini shinkansen which have standard gauge bodies and bogies) and all other trains have standard gauge bodies but run on narrow gauge track! Confused? You will be!

i’m torn between a full n scale layout (with a shunting yard) or just a small oo scale shunting yard. i love shunting but i think it would be really satisfying to have my trains taken away at the end and dropped off in a different siding. the problem is: i don’t have a high budget. you can build a oo shunting yard for about £20, and spend about £40 on a used loco and rolling stock. but there isn’t much used n scale stuff, so when buying new i’d have to spend around £70 on just the loco alone, and that’s higher than the overall price of an oo shunting yard. i also don’t have much space - i’m just looking for a layout to put on top of my dressing table. so i cant build an oo full layout. if anybody can find cheap n scale locomotives or knows where to find them, please help me!

why do the british use 16.5mm track (HO) when OO is 18.88mm. it does make the models look bulky.
@timspiers6225
@timspiers6225 6 жыл бұрын
PSB 2519 The story goes that when HO gauge came out the motors were too big to fit in British outline models. The British loading gauge is smaller than the loading gauge used on Continental and American railways. So it was decided that British models would be built to 4mm to the foot (OO) as opposed to 3.5mm to the foot (HO) but still run on 16.5mm track because the track was already available.This has caused problems for 4mm scale modellers ever since. It means that in OO gauge 16.5mm track is only representing 4' 1.5" gauge. This has led to the introduction of two other gauges, EM running on 18.2mm track and P4 running on 18.83mm track. In both cases models built to 4mm to the foot. Hope this helps.

There were Scales 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and O then when they did something half the O Scale it was called Half O (hence HO) but another way of expressing it was to say OO, there is (or was) a smaller one known as OOO. HO is 1:87 and OO is 1:76 scale.
