Pectoral sandpipers are unique among the wet tundra breeders in that they have a polygynous or promiscuous mating system. The males do elaborate courtship displays to entice females to mate with them. Here is a video of that courtship taken by one of our biologists, Lindsay Hermanns. Lindsay is working with the USFWS on a project in Alaska studying Dunlin site and mate fidelity, but her work involves several collaborative studies and a host of shorebird species nesting on the North Slope of Alaska.
