I go through the effects pedals that I consider to be essential to the country sound in the 90s, and play some excerpts to demonstrate the sound. This sound was typical of Brent Mason, John Jorgenson, and Dann Huff, in their work with more traditional country artists. This is an addendum to the Mercury Blues lesson video.
"Mercury Blues" written by K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins, 1948
Alan Jackson recording released September 13, 1993
Arista Records
Produced by Keith Stegall
"She Don't Love Nobody" written by John Hiatt
The Desert Rose Band recording released March 1989
MCA/Curb
Produced by Paul Worley and Ed Seay

I played lead for several bands back in the 80's and 90's A delay pedal was a must back then.

Thanks for the comment; I actually traded my reverb for a straight digital delay, after this video was made. I have a review of the Belle Epoch where I talk about this.

I pinned this comment, because Keith offered a valid, important critique on this video, from his own experience. I believe this video can be a good starting point for a bar band pedalboard, but I now agree with Keith that delay is essential for this sound.

Yep, I use an old Ibanez digital delay. Basically it’s just a slap back delay.

Here and across the web, people are surprised that the boss distortion sounds so good. Pedals like this and the metal zone are not like other pedals. They work best with tube amps that are slightly cranked with the power/preamp tubes in their happy place. There are a ton of people that think they don’t like the ds-1 and they have no idea how many of their favorite songs were recorded with the pedal they claim is terrible.

Great comment. I am generally using the DS-1 in a gain-stacking context.

Thanks-I think the key with the DS-1 has been to keep the tone control lower than 12 o'clock. That pedal has been down some roads! Sometimes I prefer the Tube Screamer in the same application.

Best I've ever heard a DS-1 sound!

Thanks! The DS-1 sometimes puts up a fight, but you still get enough of the distortion circuit with that control almost all the way down.

Love the silverface champ! You have a great ear for this kind of thing, there's a lot of subtle differences between each tone. I really appreciated this video. Thanks.

Thanks Andy, glad you enjoyed! The Champ does have a good sound, and I'm thinking about buying a Silverface Deluxe at some point.

I like several keeley pedals for country. I use a double track/slap back, blues driver mod, and compression. The small clone is a great choice, but i recently sold my 42 yr old small clone and replaced it with Supro which uses similar style electronics. To round it out I have a phase 90 like Waylon, but I recently just bought Fender's new Waylon Phaser pedal and a DOD Rubberneck for delay. I should add that I also play Stoner Rock and I have a Rams Head Fuzz on there. I can use this board for both Country and Americana and then switch over and playa southern stoner rock -heavier stuff. It's a pretty versatile board.

Very good comment; it sounds like you have a very practical setup. I have not used the Supro, but it might be a great substitute for EH. And I definitely like the idea of a multi-genre pedalboard.

Hey Scotty , this is a really good video. I like the way you don’t push a certain pedal and keep it more about the end result . Thanks for the knowledge !

I tend to use my TS9 at times when you used your distortion, or if that’s not gritty enough I have a blue silicon Fuzz Face. I have reverb built into my amp, but combine that with some slap back delay from an old Ibanez digital delay. I was impressed with what you did with the distortion pedal for sure! More than one way to get a good sound!
@ScottyGMusic

Excellent comment, I love hearing about another player's pedal setup! I actually sold the Cathedral after acquiring a Caitlinbread true digital delay, and I sometimes use the TS9 more the way you're saying. I'm thinking of the DS1 as part of a gain stack these days. Pedal ideas evolve over time, but it's usually close to this for me.

This was a good idea, I've considered trying to get this tone in pursuit of a Wilco sort of idea, with country guitar that delves into shoegaze

Wow, the DS-1 sounds way better with what you did with it... I didn’t think it had that kind of response to it. Gotta show this to a friend whom I’ve shot the shit with about DS1’s, I think his reaction will be similar.

Thanks for checking it out; I like comparing notes with other players, and your video spoke to the gain stacking aspect. I agree that the DS-1 is too spiky for some situations. It matches well with a Mesa, and sounded pretty good with a Peavey Bandit.

Yes, Delay instead of Reverb. Actually, I no longer own the Cathedral. I have a Catlinbread Digital Delay that I am using instead. I also mentioned the correction in my pinned comment.

@@ScottyGMusic I Have a Cathedral Pedal, Do you think it may still be Good? To have a Country Tone Reverb?

@@mass_madden Yes, I enjoyed having that pedal, and I think it is a fine substitute for the Fender Twin Reverb sound. I used the Grail reverb setting a lot.

@@ScottyGMusic I'm new to Understand how Pedals Works Best for a Country Tone, I Own a Brent Mason Wamplers Pedal, Cathedral Pedal, and EVH Phase 90. I was looking into Ego Compressor and Boss Delay DD3 Pedal, would it be good to get?
@ScottyGMusic
@ScottyGMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@mass_madden The Ego compressor is an excellent pedal; I used one constantly for about four years. It is more versatile than the Dyna Comp I'm using now. Boss DD-3 is also a great option. With those two added, I think you have a great setup.

That was nothing like Brent Mason's solo, totally the wrong sound, and if you listen to Brent's solo you can hear a slapback echo, probably around 120 - 150 BPM.
