Oops, another NRA plug. :-) I forgot that a Bud's Gun Shop gun video or two might be old enough to have the plug. Again, we're not at all enemies of the NRA, so it's not a big deal. I want the NRA to grow and get better; John and I are simply not going to accept the NRA or any other gun rights group as a sponsor in the future.

I compete with a Pedersoli version, and I love it. You are correct, it is finicky with ammo. I’m using cowboy loads using Lee 255 grain bullets cast in my back yard, using Trail Boss powder and Winchester large pistol primers. Seat the bullet down to the crimp groove and you’re golden. Powder coat my bullets a matte grey. Lots of great information in your videos, keep ‘em coming 👍🏻

The lightning from what I've heard is kinda fragile for competition. It was suggested that you would need three to compete, one to use, one in reserve for when that breaks, and one at the Smith being fixed

I have owned a .45lc Ped Lightning for 7 years(I got mine for a touch over $1000 at cabellas) and after experimenting with the ammo for a while when I first got it, I have come to absolutely love it. The loading Gate was very tight when it was new, but it loads fairly easy now. I had a bigger problem of the elevator not pushing the cartridge up properly at first, it is very picky on the ammo it likes. I shoot HSM Cowboy Action 250 grain in mine. I don't do any competitive shooting with it, but I do shoot it semi regular at the house, and use it in Deer season as my free gun walking to and from my stand.

Hello Hickok45 - I live in California and have one of these Colt Lightning replicas (medium frame), made by Uberti in Italy and also chambered in .45 Colt. It’s a sweet shooter for sure! And yes, loading the rifle is a point of contention for me as well. I have an idea for making a simple loading tool out of hardwood that will help. After fabricating it and if I find that it works well, I’ll make one for you and send it along. Meanwhile, here’s one problem I had with my rifle: the magazine plug’s retaining screw at the end of the barrel worked itself loose one day when I was shooting at the range and the spring suddenly popped out and launched itself and the plug out the end and traveled about 10 yards or so beyond the firing line. After finding all the pieces and putting them back into place, I vowed from that day forward to frequently check that screw to make sure it is tight. Interestingly, the San Francisco Police Department bought 400 of these rifles when Colt was still making them, presumably because they were rapid firing. Thanks for the great video on this fine rifle! Much appreciated.

Hello Hickock45! Mr. Holmes here . As always I like your videos compounded with your southern sense of humour. I own one of these rifles in 44-40 . I can say at first the loading gate is a little stiff but it get loosens over time. What I do is push the last round in with my pinky finger. I find 44-40 actually works better because it's a tapered case , which I find makes loading easy. I know I have to add a heavy crimp to my 44-40 when reloading for this gun. I have shot the Puma and the Uberti version and they both had jamming issues. Pedersoli In my view is the best reproduction next to USSF. You will see two frames screws on the right side that support the elevator. The originals only had one, and I suspect this was the cause behind the jamming issue . Pedersoli added and extra one to support the elevator for that reason. You can slam fire the originals because they don't have the rack release, unlike the Pedersoli which is a safety feature.

Yes , that was the I.M.I Timberwolf .357 magnum carbine , imported by Atlantic Firearms , l believe . It was around for a number of years in the 80's or so , and than disappeared . I've never seen one except on video . I've heard they were good guns . If you could find one around today they're worth a fortune . It's to bad good ideas like pistol cartridge carbines in pump action aren't given a better chance by the gun manufacturers , and the shooting public .

I have a Uberti (Italy) Lightening imported by Stoegar in .357 with a 20 inch barrel. Beautifully blued with nicely figured walnut very similar to yours just downsized. No issues chambering different type of rounds. I tend to keep this pump shouldered and on target versus my tendency to drop a lever action when operating. Just my poor technique with a lever action. Holy mackeral their price has jumped since I acquired it 20 years ago. Thanks for another great demonstration!

I once wanted to get into Cowboy Action Shooting so I bought the appropriate guns. I love the old guns but I realized that I am never going to be fast enough with a levergun or a single action revolver, (most of my shooting is with a 1911 or CZ-75), but it is still great fun to watch. I did find out that I am much slower with a lever than a pump, but then, I grew up shooting a Winchester Model 67, so the pump is very natural to me. "A man's got to know his limitations".

I have been subscribed to your channel for years. This however is the first time I've seen this video about the Pedersoli Lightning Rifle. I have a Taurus thunderbolt, and I do use it in matches and for me it is a lot faster than my 1873 Winchester. It is true that they can be finicky and there's a rhythm to working the pump that when you get it down, it tends to be very reliable. The Taurus thunderbolt, is about the third of the price of the Pedersoli version, and the Taurus Thunderbolt has had a few more complaints than the higher priced clones. Some however like mine haven't had a lick of trouble and all the matches I've ever used it and has become my first choice that I use in all my matches. The Taurus version has been discontinued for several years and I believe the Pedersoli version is the only one left available to purchase.

I feel like I can get back on target with it faster than an auto, but I have always wondered about the really short stroke on the Lightening. This sort of answered my question. Plus, the loading issue is a big problem. I'm not likely to be walking through the woods with one of these, but it would sure be a problem trying to reload that thing verses a lever gun. It's hard to beat John Browning. Besides, John Wayne used a Model 92.

Since you did this one, you should do a video including the Remington pump action rifles. I have a .308, but they're out there in 30-06 (wish I had one) and .223. Mine is a 7600 P. It has a non-rusting finish on the barrel, and comes with one lousy four-round magazine. But they were also made in 223. I inherited this from my younger brother. I believe that this rifle was designed to closely resemble an 870 (the shotgun commonly issued to police officers), as that's the action they were used to.

It’s a shame this never caught on. I imagine if pump tech had as much development as lever did in the early days, we may have never had lever guns. Pumps are also easier to shoot while prone/in cover. Hell, maybe even reduced the ubiquity of bolt guns in the early 20th century.

I’ve never shot the Colt Lightning, but I used to own a Remington 760 Gamemaster, in .30-06. It was my primary hunting rifle back in the 1960’s and early 70’s. It was better than my Winchester.30-30, when hunting deer in South Texas, that was until I got my first model 700, Remington in .308. I do like the looks of the Colt Lightning by Pedersoli, especially the octagon barrel.

I like the closeups of the gong when your shooting a big heavy slow caliber. You can see the bullet dropping in to hit it. Man do some of them fall out of the air about the eighty yard line.

Love that. Wish I could afford one. Please review the Remington 572 pump 22. Way more affordable.....

@@rigbymauser Awesome. I'm sure all the originals in good condition are broken in and smoothed out. If I ever get one, 38-40 would be my choice.

@@jeramyw I've never fired mine, I inherited it from my Grandad..It's in great shape, I'm sure it would work fine. I'd like to find some low power smokeless rounds I could run through it.

@@rilianriggs4620 Have you checked the chamber and rifling? Really old guns tend to be shot out. Have a gunsmith check everything out before doing anything with it. Smokeless powder "can" be used, but is usually not recommended. The pressure spike is usually too much. www.buffaloarms.com/44-40-winchester-200-grain-rnfp-black-powder-ammo-box-of-50-amobp4440 Here's what I would use. If it's truly in great shape, I'd keep it as a wall hanger and shoot it maybe once a year or so to keep it as pristine as possible. Especially since it's an heirloom.

12:00 it's so cool how you can see the rounds in the air! I wonder if by using the framerate of the camera you could determine the velocity?

Good to see this in your hands! I was one of the people suggesting this. I have two originals, one in 32-20 and one in .22 Long. They were close to Pedersoli's price, I wouldn't mind having a Pedersoli in 44-40. The .22 I have is a thing of beauty, a bit more refined looking than the Winchester 1890s, having a tapered octagonal barrel. The Winchesters are a better design though, simpler and more robust, the Colts are more complex. They are better in the original calibers, 44-40 and 38-40, reports are that they are more problematic in .45, I don't think they were originally offered in .45.

I have an old Marlin lever in 38-40 that was my father's. It's an absolute joy to shoot. I've always wanted to get a revolver chambered in the same caliber.

@@dcrog69 I recently bought an older Uberti SAA in that caliber. The date code is under the ejector housing and I've not had it off yet bet the gun has serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, bottom of the back strap, cylinder, and loading port, as did the original Colts. It was bought used off of GB, price wasn't bad. They are out there. I'm sure you will be keeping your dad's Marlin!

Great video H45. It seems to me if a gun is going to cost that much, it should take every kind of ammo right out of the box.

Hickock 45 you mentioned the 1897 shotgun that slam fires atleast the Norinco knock off I have does and others have told me the originals did to, so the ChiComs must have copied the flaw in the sear. I have a Taurus Thunderbolt, lightning knock off in 45 LC it's a smooth running easy to load with the right ammo if not tried to slam fire it though? I purchased it new in the box , 2012 for under $600. with title tag and tax. The short stroke takes getting used to I'm a Veteran used 12 ga pumps in SE asia thats not with paper targets and it was my secondary weapon my M-60 was primary the pump and 1911 was back up. I seen this online it's a black finish so I just had to have it I'm sure California along with the 26" barrel has 14-1 round capacity.! Great Show BTW John Hoffman I'm 80 and Yes lifes Good.
