WHY DID YOU SWITCH TO SWISS BP AND ABANDON GOEX??? SWISS IS HIGH PRICED COMPARED TO GOEX. ALSO, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REGULAR BP AND CAVIAR BALL BP?? THANKS MIKE.
@duelist19543 жыл бұрын
@@williamlincoln7695 I changed to Swiss when I was working up loads for 200 yard + rifle shooting. The velocity of Swiss is so much higher and more consistent than Goex that it made a big difference in long range loads. Swiss is faster and burns much cleaner than Goex. The Caviar powder is shaped to flow better through powder measures. I’d gladly buy regular Swiss, but the Caviar is all I can find these days.

I always liked the idea of a short pistol like that, imagining the days of Highwaymen holding up weary travelers. I prefer the slightly larger bores, some of the .58's, but the .50 is very respectable. I played around with one of Pedersoli's screw barrel pistol in .44 that uses the .451 ball and it is a pretty nice little gun, albeit percussion. Someday I might have to get a flintlock pistol. Happy Thanksgiving.

From what I'm seeing, I'd go with the paper cartridge. Love the content. The ammo shortage finally gave me the push to get back into black powder. Got a pair of navies. Now I'm just deciding on a flintlock smoothbore.

Every time I see a Queen Anne I think of Edward Teach for some reason. There was a diver I was listening to the other day, they used to dive wrecks, and this was in a location he would not disclose. But, they had been diving, and found a flintlock pistol, so they come up and 'yaaay' you know, a pistol, and everyone was happy. Well, that is, until it became monotonous, because after that, every dive would bring up a pistol, and that seemed to be all that was coming up. I forgot how many he said came up, but it must have been crates of them aboard for shipment, probably military versions, as he would not disclose what kind they were. My absolute favorites are the old Catalans, and one day I hope to have a custom build done.

The guy is documented as having worn a bandolier of pistols. I forget the exact number, around 6. He was a well-heeled gent. I'm not surprised the hold of the Revenge looked like Bannerman Arms in its heyday.

I put together a pocket pistol kit years ago. It's a screw barrel with a folding trigger. It takes a .390 ball. The screw barrel chamber squashes down hard on the ball and really gets a good seal. You can hear the difference between it and a muzzle loading Derringer when they go off. I've always wondered how hard a big bore screw barrel would shoot. i didn't know Queen Ann's were screw barrels,I've only ever seen repro's that loaded from the muzzle.

Superb showing of the Queen Anne pistol! I was impressed with the overall capability of it. You presented some facts I was unaware of concerning the replica to a real one. I have been hesitant about purchasing one, but now even though it may not historically correct, I can see a real world use for it (snakes) while hunting in muzzloading seasons. Great presentation.

What I would love to see. is how they stack up with an army and FBI type test of penetration etc. both with pine board and ballistic gel. on these BP pistols both Flint and C & B. as a comparison with something like a modern snub nose for example. Your looking at a roughly 190 grain ball going about 600 fps here. You will see no expansion and lots of over penetration with a less than bullet diameter straight wound channel.

WELL YOU SHOULD SEE MIKE'S SERIES ON THE RUGER OLD ARMY PENETRATION TESTS. THOSE OLD ARMY RUGERS WHEN LOADED UP ARE AWESOME AND EQUAL TO ANY 38SPL I HAVE SEEN. WITH BLACK POWDER YOU NEED BARREL LENGTH DUE TO SLOW BURNING POWDERS-- PROPERLY LOADED THESE BLACK POWDER GUNS ARE SERIOUS DEFENSE GUNS IF YOU NEED TO USE ONE.

And notice how well Mike has the flint setup - no out of stock precussion caps - or getting a headache making homemade caps. Flintlocks setup like Mike shows you are very reliable and much more fun than modern pistols - and almost free to shoot compared to even modern reloads.

Just what I needed to know. Copperheads and rattlers abound on my land making it dangerous to just take a walk in my woods. Even had a large rattler poolside last year. I think this is more appropriate to take out a threatening snake than modern sidearms. Definite kill at safe distance. I only shoot ones that are an immediate definite threat to me or my family. They keep out of my way I leave them alone. Love your channel and your expertise. Learning a lot from you. Thank you.

I'm of mind that in the majority of cases owners of the original smoothbore pistols most likely kept their home defense guns loaded with buckshot....as this video proves the idea had practical real world applications then and to a degree the same can be said for the modern era.

Beautiful pistol, I'd bet it would be adequate against a cougar or wild boar, at least in a pinch.
@paulcallicoat75973 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't take that bet.Boar and cougars are Chevy Trucks ad"Like a rock". Boar are tough and cougars are tougher and quicker.I shot a cougar with a 165 grain 308 bullet a few years ago.Same bullet that drops mule deer at 400 yrds .Less than 60 yrds.That cat poured blood down the mountain and I never caught up with it.4 days later other hunters told me that they crossed bloody cat tracks 2000 ft up the mountain in the snow.I seen boar take bullets from deer rifles and never slowed down.I'd pick something else to shoot dangerous game if I were you.Something like a cannon with more than one shot cause anything that can bite back will if it can.
@johnmarklockling91133 жыл бұрын
Interesting video. My only question is if it is going to be used for self defense, how long or how well will the powder stay in the pan? After carrying it for hours or days what are the chances it'll stay primed all that time without the powder falling out?

I am very interested in getting a Queen Anne pistol. I have have heard mostly positive things from people who have purchased this pistol. But I recently found some negative reviews. They claimed that the pistol was prone to breaking. They did mention "heavy loads" I have watched all of your videos on the Queen Anne and see you were using 40 grain charges and did not mention any issues. I love everything you post and very much respect your input and knowledge. How do you feel about this pistol. G.R.B III

@@duelist1954 thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I love all of your videos. I am very interested in the Golden age of pirates ☠ and early Revolutionary War period then post civil war. Love your coverage of the cap and ball Era guns and cartridge conversions. Right now I am recovering from the loss of my lower right leg. While being laid up I have been enjoying your brown bess videos and the Queen Anne pistol series. I will be purchasing the Queen Anne pistol this week. I will then be getting a Blunderbuss and a Cutlass or sword from the same Era. Latter this year I hope to be able to get a Revolutionary war Era musket.. most likely a Brown Bess. I live less than 20 miles from the Concord and Lexington battle fields. May try to get involved with one of the local Minute Man reenactment groups when I get my new leg. I could also get myself a wooden peg leg and play a pirate ☠. Thanks again

I was wondering how you were going to index the sight bead/threaded barrel/breech until you said it wasn't a true to form Queen Anne pistol. Good work.
@Stigstigster3 жыл бұрын
I think the barrel threading on any well made gun is tight and repeatable enough to just screw it on tight, mark the top of the barrel where you want the bead to sit when ready to fire and I think it'll always go back the the same spot each time. Whilst it's clean at least.
