I am new Father to a beautiful little girl. 1 week and 1 day old. While in the hospital, we were told that swaddling was no longer a preferred method that it could increase risk for SIDS. As a professor myself, I started my research. I found the article from 2016 mentioned in this video and was concerned. Especially after being told we should not swaddle. Then I read AAPs recommendations which stated that swaddling was okay, until the baby starts to roll onto their side or tummy. I wish there was a more solid answer to new parents about swaddling. I was excited and prepared until our baby came in the hospital and was told differently. Your video and you both being doctors, have helped me to decide that swaddling is indeed okay and safe. I was looking for a video on how to swaddle best to protect from hip dysplasia and issues in the future. Just want to say thank you. This has truly helped, will be tuning in to learn more as my baby grows!

Congrats Dad!! I bet that sweet little girl has you wrapped around her finger already. So glad this video was helpful. We try to share AAPs recommendations whenever possible! Before having a baby, I (Sarah) didn't realize that you had to "wean the swaddle" once they are rolling over, but of course it makes sense--don't want them stuck on their tummy! We felt swaddling really helped Cec sleep, so hopefully it helps your daughter too!

Oh my goodness! First time dad here and I had a general concept of the swaddle from the hospital, we couldn’t ever get it quite as secure as the hospital staff could. We picked up a halo sack yesterday and didn’t want to fight with it in the middle of the night with it. Tried it before putting youngster down tonight. GAME CHANGER!

She's so cute! She likes looking left I see :) My son was a right looker. It's so interesting how the advice differs from country to country. I live in Norway, and we generally don't swaddle, and also put babies to sleep with a loose blanket. I've looked at the statistics, and there doesn't seem to be much difference in SIDS rates between the two countries.

Hi dear drs love your channel. I have a one month new born... did not knew about the swaddling technique and it's quite interesting. My baby is sleeping through the night and I just wake her once to clean her and give her a feed...so no problems there but during the day she is not sleeping long enough and really short amounts of time... and mostly only close to me... is it to late to start swaddling now since I have a good night routine running. Or can I just swaddle during the day... it.wont confuse her perhaps? Binge watching your videos they are soooo insightful thanks alot!

Can you post a video of kind of teas or food that we need to avoid if we are trying to conceive ? I was drinking this apple cinnamon tea and it had licorice root in it and on google , it says licorice root can cause behavioral problems in children. I’m avoiding caffeine including black tea and matcha and green tea too since I started trying to conceive . I miss drinking something hot ( like tea ). So can you please recommend teas that are safe to drink for women trying to conceive ? Thanks

My question is when and why to swaddle, I see many people swaddling babies all night long which is something that worries me as I feel this could make it easier to suffocate if the baby squirms and with the swaddling creating a sausage shape that rocks easily and so the baby might end up on his/her face. Would it not be better to only swaddle when a baby awake and needs some comfort?

I like to ask what is the max folic acid dose I can take, before pregnancy, I talked 800 mcg, and when I got pregnant I talked 1200 mcg now I'm 10 weeks I'm thinking to go back to 800 mcg. I do this because of my age and I had 2 miscarriages before.

@TheDoctorsBjorkman
@TheDoctorsBjorkman 2 жыл бұрын
A good rule to follow is to have baby in similar layers as you are wearing plus one. At room temperature for sleep, a single layer plus a swaddle blanket is almost always sufficient. Please be careful not to have extra blankets where baby is sleeping as this can be a risk to them should the blanket get infront of their faces and block their breathing.

should the baby be naked when being swaddled, so they dont sweat?

No need to be naked. One layer plus the swaddle blanket is perfect. (Think of it like when you wear pajamas to bed and then cover up with blankets!)

I personally think some parents swaddle their kids way too tight it looks like a torture

Out of curiosity has anyone tried the Swaddle me velcro swaddles? I found a bunch of them on clearance, so I bought them. I'm a first time mom so I hope they are good, just seemed easier then trying to do the wrapping up in a blanket...

I personally loved the muslin swaddles the most. Velcro is loud and sometimes you have to change a sleeping baby.

This question is for Kurt: As a Pediatrician, would you treat your Daughter yourself, or would you take Her to a different Pediatrician? You should make a video about explaining what you would do in that case.

Pretty sure its illegal (conflict of interest) for doctors to treat their family

Not illegal (at least in US). It IS advised against though. Child of a doctor here- never received medical care from parent but did go to their practice and see a different doctor. Might have gone to parent once or twice when other provider was not in- for things like shots, etc., I know my parents reasoning for NOT seeing family as patients was more of a concern with comfort for both doc and family. For example, a child might not tell their doc they are sexually active if their doc is their parent. Or, children may associate the fear/discomfort of shots/doc appointments with their parent- which wouldn’t be fun. Or parental emotions could interfere with quality of care, etc.,
