Noone ever talks about Jeff Mayhem Thompson....My friend....The head body guard for the band that took two bullets trying to do his job. I am from Dallas. Mayhem was a mainstay at Scarborough Renaissance Festival. A huge man with a huge heart. There was nothing that Mayhem could of done. People please remember Jeff Thompson aka Mayhem. He did what he could do. He gave his life for this band. He is a hero to me. RIP my friend Mayhem.

Pantera was formed as a hair band in Texas back in the early 80's by teenage brothers Diamond Darrell (later Dimebag Darrell) on guitar and Vinnie Paul on drums... Rex Brown (bass) joined w/ Terry Glaze (vocals)... Dime and Vinnie were huge fans of Kiss, Van Halen, Judas Priest and ZZ Top... and those influences shaped their first 3 indie-released albums which they recorded at their dad's studio. Around 1986, Pantera started getting into the heavier bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer... and they wanted a more aggressive vocalist... New Orleans native Philip Anselmo (vocals) joined in 1987 and recorded their 4th album 'Power metal'... By 1988, Pantera decided to ditch the big hair and spandex. They went for a casual look w/ a harder sound and edge... After years of being passed over by the music industry, Pantera was signed in 1990 after an Atco A&R saw their brutal set at a Texas gig. The new, aggressive Pantera debuted in 1990 w/ the album 'Cowboys from Hell'... they toured like conquering marauders w/ only 2 rules: Kill on the stage... and drink/ party backstage til u drop... Pantera quickly built a reputation as a brutal live band, so much so that Rob Halford (vocals) of Judas Priest became a fan and invited Pantera to open for them on tour. Next major label album 'Vulgar display of power' was a more brutal album w/ groove & melody... it sold gold in the US (and pushed 'Cowboys from hell' past gold sales as well) ...Both albums have sold 2x platinum to date. Without any radio airplay, their 1994 album 'Far beyond driven' reached #1 on the US charts and sold platinum... However, by this point, vocalist Phil Anselmo started experiencing back pain from damage he had suffered on tour... By 1995, he began abusing he+++n (w/ pills and alcohol) to cope w/ the pain and it started making him unpredictable on tour. In 1996, Pantera were ready to end the 90's grunge/ alternative trend w/ the album 'The great southern trendkill'... but the band was fracturing w/ Phil on one side and the rest on the other... Phil suffered an OD after a Pantera show and that didn't help matters internally ... Bassist Rex Brown was becoming weary of the heavy drinking and partying scene that Dime and Vinnie were so fond of, so he started traveling w/ Phil on tour... In 2000, Pantera released their final album 'Reinventing the steel'... but the tour was postponed twice - once in 2000 after Phil broke a rib after a mishap... and again after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The classic Pantera never toured again. Between 2002 - '03, Phil Anselmo decided he needed a break from Pantera... he and Rex Brown recorded a Down album, and then Phil started a hardcore project Superjoint Ritual that released 2 albums by '04. Dime and Vinnie spent 2 years in limbo and finally had enough... They were ready to go w/ a new band Damageplan in 2004 and released 1 album 'New found power'... recorded w/ vocalist Pat Lachman as Damageplan spent '04 touring non-stop. On Dec. 8, 2004, which tragically was the 24th anniversary of John Lennon's death at the hands of a deranged fan... Damageplan were playing a show at Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio... A former marine w/ mental illness broke into the club and shot and killed Dimebag Darrell onstage. He fatally shot 3 more people before police arrived and ended his life and rampage. At Dimebag Darrell's funeral, his hero guitarist Eddie Van Halen attended and gave his old guitar to be buried w/ him... The band Kiss even provided him w/ their custom-made casket... However, Pantera vocalist Phil Anselmo was not invited to pay his respects and mourn. Drummer Vinnie Paul joined the southern-fried heavy rock band Hellyeah! in 2007 and was happy to be making records and playing live again after losing his brother... Sadly, Vinnie Paul passed away in 2018 from heart failure; he was laid to rest next to his brother Dimebag Darrell. The legacy of Pantera loomed large... Both Phil Anselmo and Rex Brown had declined to reactivate the band. But after they reached an agreement w/ Vinnie and Dime's family, they decided in 2022 to tour as Pantera again to celebrate the late brothers' legacy and music. Ozzy osbourne/ Balck Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde was a close friend of both Dimebag and Vinnie; he would be in charge of playing Dimebag Darrell's guitar parts live... Charlie Benante of the band Anthrax was chosen to play drums; he was a huge Pantera fan and a personal friend of the band (Dimebag Darrell had contributed lead guitar solos to 3 Anthrax albums)

This song is about a guy who is contemplating suicide in order to reunite with his dead girlfriend because he passes by the cemetery everytime he steps outside. In general, it is just a song about longing for a loved one who passed away. The 'reverend' in the song is whoever you turn to for guidance but fails to give you the kind of answers you are looking for. Vocalist, Phil Anselmo plays the reverend in the video. The guitarist is (Dimebag) Darrell Abbot and yes, he was shot and killed by a fan who blamed him for the breakup of Pantera while playing for Damageplan in 2004. The drummer is Vinnie Paul, his brother who saw him get shot on stage. Darrell did not survive his wounds and Vinnie passed away due to his own medical conditions 14 years later in 2018.

The last part about the shooting is a bit of an exhageration though. Nathan Gale who was the shooter was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was on medication that wasn't strong enough. He appearantly had dillusions that Pantera were stealing his lyrics and went mad because of it. In all honesty though, nobody really knew what was going through his head as he had a serious mental condition that probably could've been handled appropriately if not for his doctor who was probably the real menace in this all.

I remember watching on MTV News the video of Dimebag being murdered right on stage while playing- you couldn't see anything graphic but you could see what happened pretty well and I was a teenager. It was so sad. Like when John Lennon got killed by an obsessed fan - same thing with Dimebag. Somebody was mad that he left Pantera and killed him on stage in front of his fans. RIP Dimebag💙💙

Dime was shot and killed in Columbus Ohio at Alrossa Villa night club while he was performing with his and his brothers new band Damageplan. On December 8th 2004, Damageplan was on the final stretch of shows on the club tour when Nathan Gale a former Marine and mentally ill individual. Nathan was accusing Dime as being the reason Pantera split up and was no longer a band. When Nathan Gale snuck in through an unlocked door to the club he rushed on stage and fired several shots hitting Dime in the head I believe 3 times at point blank range. Meanwhile Dimebags brother Vinnie Paul was playing drums and witnessed the murder of his brother on stage. I was supposed to attend the show that night but was very ill, and gave my ticket to a friend and he attended the show instead. I live in Cincinnati Ohio a mere 90 minutes from the club in question. One of only 2 people (unrelated to me) that I shed tears for upon their death. The world lost a fantastic guitar player and a truly great person. He only cared about his fans and the music he created, he lived every minute of his life for those two things and he did not care about nothing else. He was a prankster and a genuine human being. R.I.P. Dime you forever will be missed.

This a great 3rd or 4th "introduction" to Pantera. You get the feel of the band with "Domination", particularly the Moscow live show, and "Walk". Those are the ones people usually hear first. You know they groove, they're heavy and most people can see how these guys have inspired bands ever since. Then there's this. "Damn, he can sing too?" And they're still grooving those riffs. I like that you have this connection with the band as well. Technically Dime and Vinnie weren't Pantera then. They were performing as Damage Plan when Dimebag got shot on that stage. That stage is hallowed ground for any metalhead.

So Phil basically told them if you have something to say Say it to my face punk Or get away ftom me, and Walk !

I went to Harpos for probably 50 shows in the late 90s early ‘00. So many great memories there. Crazy story, there was a homeless man right by where we parked one night, and i wanted to help, so i said “hey Will you Keep an eye on my car? I’ll give you $10” which i have him and sure enough he was still there when we came out and reported no one messed with your car. Then every time i went there after that he was there, i eventually began bringing him food and clothes as payment, and even bought him a ticket to see mushroomhead one night, I haven’t thought of that in a long time… thanks for the memories. I have a new respect for you just knowing we may have crossed paths before 🤜🏻🤛🏽 16:36 And yes the stage it’s like 11 ft tall😂

Fun fact most ppl don’t know or understand or ever really paid attention to it. But Vinnie plays the drums with the fat end of the sticks hitting the actual drums instead of the small end like every other drummer out there. That’s why he gets so much power out of the drums. He literally beats the fuck out of them.

Yes you were correct the brother with the curly hair. Phenomenal guitar player. Yes I know that the long hair ruled as a band. Chicks loved long haired guys in a band. It was and should still be part of the criteria imo. His blue guitar is a relic, I forget who has one of his guitars and yes many love to use that style of guitar in heavy metal. Keeping the lights on 🤘🏻🇺🇸

Yes it was the Alarosa Villa, in Columbus, OH. We were supposed to be there that night but, I became ill. We were all heartbroken. We just saw Pantera in Columbus. Zakk Wylde has been sitting in the last two years. ( We saw them last year, too. ) Which is perfect, given he and Dime were BFF. You should react to his band Black Lable Society, In This River. It was dedicated to Dime. And played at his funeral and wake. BTW, Zakk has been with Ozzy since he was 19 years old.

Oh you know Dime when you hear the guitar guys. His sounds can’t me replicated. His tone is one of a kind. And the signature harmonic Squeals 😌 I miss Dime so much. Vinny is also one of. A kind drummer he has his own unique technique and sounds as well he did a lot of badass riff. My favorite song from Pantera is Domination.

On December 8, 2004, four people were murdered and three others were wounded in a mass shooting at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio The shooter was an Iraqi army veteran, I believe, who became disgruntled and upset because Pantera broke up and he decided that he needed to kill dimebag Darrell for being in another band.

I am from east Texas and went to Dallas/Fort Worth many times for shows. It was always 6 degrees of separation with Vinnie and Darrell. A friend always knew them or bumped into them. I wasn't really into metal at the time, maybe metal adjacent stuff from time to time. Anyway other "southern metal" bands that you might check out are Down, Corrosion of Conformity, and Clutch. I will also throw in Life of Agony on the list.

Great story I took my daughter to see him probably 30 years ago in Grand Prairie TX and I had played him so much around the house she knew all the words. So here I am up by the stage with a little girl on my shoulders singing along with Chris. He kept waving and grinning like a proud parent because a little girl knew his songs.

Harpo's is where Warrant recorded their Live 1996 LP. I'm a big Warrant fan. Jani Lane didn't have tremendous range, but He was a good dude I met on several occasions and a great song writer IMO. They are one of my favorite bands and that LP is one of my favorite albums. The acoustics are unmatched. Peace!

Metal heads have more incidence of feeling happier, able to face negative emotions, and more resilient, most of the best metal songs are about facing trauma and facing the hardest things. Definitely the most essential genre for me, like a soothing balm, and Pantera is god level in lyrics and musical mastery. In a crises I would absolutely choose metal heads to survive with, they're usually the nicest people, with guts. Totally misunderstood stereotype.

I think a LOT of people have the misconception that metal singers are not great singers (myself included before I learned), and many of them are not, but the singers for bands like Slipknot (as youalready mentioned), Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and others can absolutely sing their asses off. Edit: Also, the 2 members that are no longer with us were brothers (Vinnie Paul Abbott and Darrel "Dimebag" Abbott), and their final resting place is less than 5 miles from my house. I actually visited their gravesite when I went there on Memorial Day for the veterans.

This song you listened to is from their 1990 album, while "Walk" which you reacted to previously was from their next album in 1992. Pantera got progressively heavier as time went on so you're listening to one of their softer songs.
