I love that you are taking this journey into the "greatest music ever produced" (yes, I know that is very subjective.) I love watching your face because your face tells the true feelings you are experiencing. And just from one old 54yo guy that has suffered depression for over 45 years due to some unresolved-until-recently abuse I went through as a child, crying is a great outlet to release emotions. Because if you hold emotions in for too long, they will come out in far worse ways than crying. I have been a very emotional guy my whole life but suddenly in 2015, I stopped crying & just became indifferent. Then, on July 12, 2017, everything inside me exploded when someone said something that triggered me. I spent 3 years incarcerated because of it. I know this is a long post & I apologize for that. But if by submitting this comment I can help one person, it was worth it. I try to use all the negative in my life now to help others. God Bless!

Years ago on roskilde Festival, Denmark, R.E.M was on the stage and the moon was rising behind us, and he made 40.000 + people turn around and look at the moon for a while and enjoy the beauty. Even for a pragmatic person like me, it was a magic moment.

This song has literally saved lives. Caused me to realize I needed help for my depression and PTSD. Saved my life.

This song saved many Gen-X's lives when it came out. Another song of theirs that is as relevant today as it was when it was released is "It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)".

Michael Stipe is an incredible vocalist. His voice is very iconic and unmistakable. REM was huge in their hey day. Their entire catalog is full of reaction worthy material. Also, still completely relevant 32 years later. Great art always stands the test of time.

Nobody called them Rem as a word. It’s always only been R. E. M. This is a phenomenal anti-Suicide song. Just phenomenal. No one has ever done anything even near close to how deeply personal and relatable as this one is. It’s the human condition ♥️

This song is a universal empathy test. If you can listen to this , watch the video, and NOT be touched... you have no soul. I don't care who you are, how old you are, where you came from, what you been thru... this gets to the heart of what it is to be human. And being a human at times is HARD.

The singer Michael Stipe has dealt with depression and suicidal thoughts throughout his life, I think to a large extent he wrote this song to himself as much as to other people. Michael Stipe also has autism, and I'm sure that has contributed to his feelings of alienation.

My favorite part of the video is the part at the end. Everyone STUCK in traffic (stuck in their hurt) then they get out and walk the direction their cars were going (moving forward). Just keep moving forward in life.

At 21/22 years old a friend of mine's father scored a couple front row tickets to REM's concert in Vancouver in the early 90's... so we planned a guy's road trip to drive near 20 hours there to see them. When my workplace changed my schedule, I quit my job to go. I do not regret that decision.

Bill Berry (drummer of REM) wrote 'Everybody Hurts' as an anti-suicide song. He wanted to write a song that would reach out to people who felt they had no hope. Ironically, two years later, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (good friend of Michael Stipe, lead singer of REM) shot himself on this day (April 5th) in 1994. This video was filmed in San Antonio, TX. At the end, everyone walked away from the stagnant traffic jam.. life can feel the same.

The morning that Kurt Colbain was found dead in his home and the news broke...I listened to this over and over. I bet a lot of people did. I remember hearing somewhere that he had loved this song. And I felt so sad that the meaning of the song just wasn't enough to save him.

My only celebrity contact was a run in with Michael Stipe. Literally. I was going for a run along the sea wall in Vancouver and a man on his cell phone stepped out in front of me without seeing me. Being a typical Canadian I stumbled out of his way but I apologized to him, and as we made eye contact, my eyes probably bugged out of my head. It was Stipe! He kinda just nodded his head in acknowledgement of our almost accident. And I kept running.

The song came out in 1992. I remember because it was the year that I finally got out of the drug and partying scene and also met my husband and a couple years later we had our beautiful son together. Quite a pivotal year for me.

Dude, this song prevented me from doing the deed. I've been suffering with PTSD and a bipolar disorder for a long time. Before I had proper care I was a mess and honestly thought that I was a burden to everyone who loved me. Life at that time was in my eyes not worth it. A friend made me listen to that song and made me realized that I was worth it and lot of people would be devastated if I went through with my plan. That was 26 years ago and today I work in a hospital taking care of people and my life is great. So yeah, R.E.M. help me and you are so right when you say that people need to hear that song. REM was an indie group for years until they got their commercial break. Both their indie and commercial stuff is great! For indie, I would recommend the followings songs that I don't think you've heard before (based on what you said at the end of the "Everybody Hurts" reaction): "Gardening at Night", "Orange Crush", (Don't Go Back to) Rockville", "Radio Free Europe", "Fall On Me. And from their commercial hits, I would recommend "Man on the Moon", "What's the Frequency Kenneth" and "Shiny Happy People". Of course, the default REM song for most people is "Losing My Religion", but I think you may have heard it. If not, you should. Hope this helps! 🙂

Yeah everyone does cry but always remember, the deeper sorrow carves into your soul, the more joy it can contain! That trying to stay strong bull shit is incredibly damaging and dangerous. Sometimes it IS too hard and all you can do is hang on till it gets better. Remember it ALWAYS does eventually.

R.E.M. was my first concert back in 1995 and they're still in my top five. This song is really good, but they were constantly changing, so they have a little something for everyone. The message is really important, of course. If you want to continue on the theme, you might want to revisit Aurora. She's really big into normalizing emotional expression and wrote The River after she found out that 75% of suicides were men. If you just want something to cry to, try Murder Song (live at the Nobel Peace Prize concert).

A little word to anyone who has trouble crying when they need to. Physiologically, crying has a purpose. When you cry, your body releases endorphins, basically natural opioids, that actually help you calm down. It's a gift from your body to your mind and soul. It's ok to accept the gift and use it.

Society has made boys and men feel they are weak or less manly if they show emotions and cry. Everyone has tear ducts for a reason...everyone has pain and angst in their lives....We can cry from pain, but also from joy. It is good sometimes to let tears roll , and to feel the emotions and to reach for help when in physical or mental pain. Never feel bad to let your feelings show....holding all that pain inside causes all kinds of health problems.

"People need this song." It's so true. This isn't a song about depression. It's a song about dealing with depression. WE ARE ALL HUMAN. And this song touches on every part of humanity.

yeah man!...REM was the stuff back in the day. Mid-to-late 80's is when I jumped aboard, thus the older school stuff. Albums like "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Murmur" are classics, with awesome tracks like "Fall On Me" and "Talk About the Passion" being incredible, but other older tunes like "Driver 8", "So. Central Rain", "Pretty Persuasion", and "Radio Free Europe" are all legendary classics from the era that I'd highly recommend!....just old school college radio at it's finest.

I don't like crying in public, and I'm a female. I also rarely cry by myself. Now and then, I will have a good all out snotty sobbing session, and I must admit, I always feel so much better after. I have bipolar, which sucks to deal with....but deal with it I do, so this song has always resonated with me.

I had just gotten my drivers license when this song came out. I grew up on a small island off the coast of Ga. I worked at this little reasturant all through highschool/ college, etc. A few years later, the whole REM band was on vacation there for a couple weeks and i ended up taking care of them. They were amazing!! I was totally trying not to fan girl and after about 10 min, they were so laid back and great, i never thought of them that way again.
