Helium said on a livestream recently that he’s shy about his singing so he doesn’t do it publicly. He just did a live stream last week and was planning to stream for 8-10 hours to raise money to buy his plane ticket to Japan for GBB and he thought it would take at least that long, but his community came through and we raised over $2k in under 2 hours for him. He’s a super humble, super cool guy. I became a member on his channel after you started reacting to him and he has a Telegram chat setup for members where he drops shorts and he’s super interactive with the community and there are actually some of the other big beatboxers that pop in and chat from time to time.

Helium ist just THE living drum kit... Noone is that clean and powerful on the drums. Just gotta love him

Beatboxers that I've met use a kind of notation while writing routines notating each sound, what influence to put on that sound, what breath it takes and where you transition, what mouth shape, tongue position and what throat mechanics to use.

In regards to how to right down beatbox as music, it usually is not written. You can write the patterns like "B T K B T T K, Pf T K, Pf T K" but the tones are usually just free flow or memorizations.

The best way to think about how beatboxers learn beats is to compare it to learning the lyrics to a song. It’s essentially the same thing. As long as you’re skilled enough to use and maintain the specific sounds in a beat you can recreate it pretty faithfully within a fair amount of time. The hard part is making the routine your own like Helium.

Alot of times with beatbox routines they almost become like muscle memory after practicing them enough times.

to answer your question: some patterns are totally beeing able to be written down for example: "b-ts-ts-ts-k-ts-ts-ts..." and since helium uses alot of drums its not hard to write the patterns down but i assume he barely writes something down. me personally mostly record anything that sounded cool while freestyling and kinda try giving it a name.

Don, that is a brilliant question i have never thought of! I think BP is probably right. it's such an insane art that you have to do literally everything... notes, melody, rythem and time signature, pitching, specific effects ect, i suspect it's a matter of practice makes better!

It would s actually like learning a language, and typically people do remember every sound and have routines for every round of battling. Some people do freestyle more than others like napom. But 99% they remember every sound and it is rehearsed in over and over again like an artist before they go on tour.

6:08 to answer the question asked here: Reeps One had his brain scanned while he was performing one time. The brain scan showed that his brain was using the same neurons that we use to speak languages. So essentially, beatboxing is like speaking another language. Now obviously some people have better creative processes than others, so this results in each beatboxer finding their own way to form a "routine".

There is a form of sheet music for beatbox with sounds encoded as letters but the melody will never be written down. And speaking from personal experience only if u get a melody you enjoy doing the drums always fall in place around it as you go

As to write beatbox, I think that most beatboxers use memorization and freestyle but there is write beatbox and one of the best visual representations of write beatbox in a video has to be HISS VS HEARTZEL | Flip | #bbu22 1/4 Finals video. HIGHLY recommend to anyone its so good.

Just for your info, if you ever hang around beatboxers, they can just do this all day. They just can endlessly freestyle beats and are constantly trying new melodies, patterns, sounds. After competitions they all stand in circles and just freestyle and experiment with patterns and sounds they don't do in competition. They play games where one creates a pattern, tosses it the next guy, he remixes, then the next guy continues it and they go on forever until the original beat and melody is completely lost and are completely coming up with just new wild patterns and tracks

Most of beatboxers don't have note (like you can have with others instruments), but when we have one idea, we record it on our phone, and just practice it until we reach the result we want. For the battle, every beatboxer have work on their spécial routine and technics, they use them in function off the oponent they will face and his style (it's a little bit like a chest game). And they also try to copy the most knowned technics off others beatboxers, because it's the kind of things that will make the audience crazy and give you advantage (if you can do the same thing that the others guy did before you, it means that what he did was not a big deal 🤗). So there is a little part of freestyle in it too, but most of the rounds are calculated and ready before the battle, because you need to finish your stuff at the end of your round (if you are in the middle of a routine when your time is over, It means that you was not able to use your time efficiently)

They do not freeflow it, well some might, but these kinds of things nope. They write it down and it looks mad. Look at BEST DRUM AND BASS PATTERNS - Tutorial by Helium, its all written down as a pattern they memorise
