I know the 1970s were something for another generation I wasn't in. But being born in 1971, the 80s sure were the best: good music, good movies/series (Back to the Future, Top Gun, Miami Vice and so many others). Always looking back at this time - 2020s are a sore!

He was originally just the drummer way back when the band Genesis first started out. At that time Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Peter left the band to pursue a solo career, the band started auditioning for a new lead singer. In the meantime, the plan was for Phil to temporarily take over the lead singing duties. Turned out they never hired a replacement lead singer, and it was Phil ever since. This particular song came from one of Phil's solo albums.

A few years ago, he started touring with his son, who was something like 16 at the time and my dude just beats those drums like they owe him money. He really takes after his dad. It has been sad to see Collins age to the point where he has a hard time standing anymore and it's rough for him to hit the drums, but it's also great to see him perform with his son. Its wild that a lot of people still don't know Phil is a drummer but he honestly is known mostly for his singing to mainstream audiences not deep into the stuff he has been involved with over the years. The big 80's gated snare huge drum room sound? Phil Collins and the boys literally invented it because Peter Gabriel forced him to play without using cymbals of any kind so they had to fill the drum mix with something. Dude pioneered a whole ass decade defining production technique that is still used to this day and one of the core components of the sound of the 1980's

You miss the point, you forget he was the lead singer and drummer in Genesis. I only know one more more band with the lead singer to be a drummer, its a Finnish band called the hurryganes, good band by the way, look it up.

I dont want to correct you, that may have happened just after this happened. However, I watched a documentary where Mike and Tony were explaining how Phil started singing. They said they auditioned loads of people. Phil would lead them in, help them out, do a bit of singing to get things going. Mike and Tony said at the end of the day none of the candidates were better than Phil! So I guess they asked him in a round about sort of way :)

This was from yeeeeeears ago; he's 71 now! (just retired last year due to health) Gives me chills every time I hear this Live version. Phil Collins started out as the fantastic drummer for Genesis; he wasn't actually a singer until later, and not "trained". You should really be saying, "HE SINGS TOO?!" I was puzzled at first about your reaction to the headset, cuz I knew Phil Collins first as Genesis' drummer/lead singer. Then as I understood you didn't know what was coming, I was anticipating both his drumming & your reaction. LOL. I'm still grinning over it. Phil Collins was a great performer. I saw him in 1984 (Genesis, Mama tour) and it was FANTASTIC. Ya know... my dad always said you should learn at least one new thing every day. I enjoyed watching you learn. :)

The night before Super Bowl XL, Bill Cowher turned the lights down low and had the Steelers lie on the floor. He told them to relax and envision the next day, pre-game warm-up, playing, winning, and celebrating. Then he play "In The Air Tonight." Many of the players say it was a spiritual experience that propelled them to the victory.
