He was Madonna's biggest influence. Which is why she had so many reinvention and eras and characters. Seeing him in concert gave her the permission and inspiration. Only her and David Bowie had that.

Not to take anything away from this classic, but 10 years ago Commander Chris Hadfield - a Canadian astronaut who was captaining the ISS (International Space Station) did an iconic remake of Space Oddity live from the ISS, floating weightless with his guitar. In Hadfield's words: "I had to get Bowie’s permission and he said it was the most poignant version ever. Millions of people have seen my version and it put laughter and joy in the face of David Bowie in the last couple years of his life. So that changed my life."

He influenced artists all over the world, you can give examples in all the countries of the world, since I am British I can tell you that all the artists and bands of the late 70s and early 80s had Bowie as a reference.

David Bowie was not ahead of his time. He was exactly where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be and my generation was beyond blessed to have had him in our lives. He was a composer, a singer, an artist, an actor (Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Labyrinth), a model, an activist, and an absolute Gentleman who, at one of his concerts, made a lowly gate ticket-taker feel like she was doing the most important job on the planet. The day he died this ticket-taker lost a piece of her soul. So happy another generation has found him.

Hmm - controversial option perhaps but personally, I find the extreme use of panning of this era too naive. It was new tech and they didn’t really know what to do with it, or how to use it so they used it as a gimmick - like “in the summer time” by Mungo Jerry. It wasn’t intended for listening on headphones really - it was mixed expecting people to hear it on the primitive stereo equipment people had started to get. This is not the worst stereo mix of the time by far, but o just think it still feels primitive and naive by modern standards. I liken it to 3D films - where film makers (with rare exceptions) didn’t really know what to do with it, or how to use it artistically as part of the story telling organically, so you get flaming balls flying at you, or dogs barking in your face, or sudden looking down at big drops - which have an “impact” but it’s crude and breaks the immersion a lot of the time. It’s also like when they first had colour film and we got over saturated Technicolor until film makers calmed down and stopped treating it as a gimmick. But - I get this was revolutionary and creative …for the time, and I don’t find it’s “pleasing” to a modern ear used to more subtle and refined techniques now.

For those who don't know, Apollo 11 was the first spaceflight that landed humans on the moon (on July 20, 1969). Apollo 1 (one) never flew. A flash fire in the cabin during a launch rehearsal test in January 1967 killed all three astronauts. It led to a resign of the door and the use of an oxygen/nitrogen mix rather than pure oxygen. There was no Apollo 2 or 3. Apollos 4, 5, and 6 were non-crewed tests of the nearly complete system. Apollo 7 (Oct 1968) was the first crewed American space flight in 22 months. It flew in low Earth orbit for 11 days. Apollo 8 (Dec 1968) was the first crewed spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit. It orbited the moon ten times. Apollo 9 (Mar 1969) was the first flight of the full Apollo spacecraft: It flew in low Earth orbit for ten days as they tested systems for landing on the moon. Apollo 10 (May 1969) was the fourth human spaceflight in the United States' Apollo program and the second to orbit the Moon. Apollo 11 (Jul 1969) ... heckuva timeline... 5 crewed missions between Oct 1968 and July 1969.

Bowie's "Space Oddity" was NEVER banned in the U.S. It was however banned by the BBC for use on it's airwaves during the Apollo 11 mission, because they thought it would be in poor taste, but apparently the crew covering the Apollo 11 saga never got the memo and they played it as background music during the coverage anyway.

David was married until his death to a gorgeous black model. I'm blocking on her name. Iman maybe? He died of cancer around age 69 I think. I cried when he died.

Fun fact: David Bowie is an inductee of both the rock & roll hall of fame and the Science Fiction and Fantasy hall of fame! Man was versatile and talented, and is deeply missed by all who loved him. I wish I had seen him live. My personal favourite by Bowie is his cover of Brel’s Amsterdam, but my favourite of the ones he wrote himself is Life on Mars. The “sequel” to Space Oddity is Ashes to Ashes.

I love that you're new to Bowie! He actually co-wrote Under Pressure with Queen (the song whose bass-line Vanilla Ice uses in Ice Ice Baby). He was the whole package. Singer, song-writer, musician. He was even an actor. I highly recommend checking out Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence!!!

I often think of Bowie when listening to Ren. Bowie was never constrained to any particular genre. Multi talented, playing guitar, sax and keys. A great actor. His back catalogue is huge and his influence on multiple artists is enormous. Personal favourite is Sweet Thing, Candidate, Sweet Thing reprise. A tour deforce of his vocal range. But to be fair you could pick any song at random and it will be a classic.

Great to see you reacting to Bowie. His 1972 album 'The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars' is one of the most iconic and influential of all time. Bowie has too many great hits to mention but 'Starman' is as good as any to do next. He was a chameleon, one of the most innovative and creative geniuses of the 70's (and some will say beyond). His albums evolve from one to the next as he explores different musical directions. To mention him in the same breath as Billy Idol is, let's just say a bit wide of the mark (but I won't hold that against you lol). P.S. The moon landing happened July 20, 1969, no matter what the conspiracy morons may wish to believe and '2001 A Space Odyssey' is a book by Arthur C Clark and an iconic movie by Stanley Kubric, both from 1968. Interestingly they worked together on the story. Cheers

You cannot put him in one genre. He constantly reinvented himself. He was the first artist to make his music available to stream, on his own. PLEASE do more by him from lots of different times. I was lucky to see him live in Portland for the Glass Spider tour. You should check KZfaq for interviews with him also. There is a reference to major tom in his ashes to ashes song... the video for that is certainly unique for its time. He crossed many different genres during his time. Major tom is from his ziggy stardust time. You might be interested in particular with two duets he did - bing Crosby and mick jagger. Let's dance is a great track too. I would suggest trying at least one track from all of his incarnations. Its definitely worth the journey. He is much missed. Btw greetings from Glasgow Scotland to you and the boyz xx

It came out the same year as the moon landing, which I watched and there is not real argument that it really happened. It's the most ridiculous thing that some people buy into it not happening. It happened. Space Oddity was not a movie, but 2001: A Space Odyssey was, and it is a play on words regarding that. I have loved David Bowie most of my life. He wasn't just a character. You will see that he was a lot of characters. He would change into whatever he felt he wanted to be for different albums. You can watch him act in Labyrinth. And I always felt that this song was a metaphor for a man who is depressed because "Planet earth is blue... it's sad... and there's nothing he can do." So, he is getting high on narcotics and floating around in a most peculiar way... and losing touch with reality.

Besides, as someone who is denying a well documented point in history, it is literally YOUR responsibility to successfully prove it didn’t happen. That’s literally how these things work. It’s called the “burden of proof”. When challenging or denying something, especially when challenging the status quo, the burden of proof is on the challenger. So, to sum up, YOU prove it didn’t happen and prove it with SUFFICIENT actual, scientific based evidence, not theories, hypotheses, and conspiracies because none of these things are actually considered, by any definition, evidence…..unless you’re joking/trolling, in which case, carry on. 😂👍

Bowie went through complete costume and musical types every few years. He reinvented his own image, always experimenting with new sounds. Nothing he produced was bad or boring! My favorite? "Changes"! That song saved my life from emo-heavy teen angst and suicidal thoughts. But at the other end of the spectrum, a silly (probably drug-induced) song called "The Laughing Gnome". "Rebel, Rebel", "Let's Dance", and "Heroes" are all must-hear songs. Honestly, you could pick a couple songs from each album just to watch his evolution. And please, don't forget the entire soundtrack of the movie "Labyrinth" where he portrayed an awesome Goblin King! Really looking forward to you experiencing more of my favorite solo artist :)

Great reaction! Bowie is unmatched. Such a rare talent. My favorite is Life on Mars. For you: Fame Let’s Dance Changes Heroes Modern Love Golden Years Ziggy Stardust You can’t go wrong with any Bowie song.

In the 70ies Bowie formed the worlds first "society for the prevention of cruelty to long haired men". As he said: "Anyone who has the courage to wear their hair down to his shoulders has to go through hell. It’s time we were united and stood up for our curls. Everybody makes jokes about you on a bus, and if you go past navvies digging in the road, it’s murder!’ -Still applies to this day.

Bowie was brilliant in both his music and on his insights regarding culture and society. He was a smart and way before his time, here is what he said in 1999 about the internet: "I don't think we've even seen the tip of the iceberg. I think the potential of what the Internet is going to do to society, both good and bad, is unimaginable. I think we're actually on the cusp of something exhilarating and terrifying. That week in January 2016 when we lost David Bowie, followed by Alan Rickman, really knocked me sideways. Both had pancreatic cancer and both were 69. RIP both.

What are you doing in Spain when the fields and countryside are so green and pleasant here? lol I am right on the edge of London and I am returning tomorrow night and Saturday but have just returned from a lovely weekend in West Sussex and The Daffodils are already out everywhere. @Isleofskye Hi there! Nice to hear from you again! Yes, I have permanent residency in Spain and have done for the past 20 years - haven't even been back once. I moved here with my mother (who passed away 10 years ago) and I'd recommend it to anyone - lovely weather, lifestyle, and people. Sometimes I think of you all back in Britain - but not often!

@@TenCapQuesadaHi. Thanks for your reply. We have different preferences, Janet. lol, In fact,I have not been abroad since before you moved to Spain. That was a 2001 holiday in Tenerife and that and the 1996 break in Portugal were the only ones since Lanzarote in 1988. Though I did go to The Isle Of Wight in 2017 😀 I'm afraid every part of me is English and a Londoner but it sounds great. Take Care.

EVERYONE has been influenced by David Bowie. Heroes” was my introduction to the amazing David Bowie. From there I went back in his catalog. And then I got to go forward with him through the years. So lucky to have spun around the sun while he was with us.

Where to even start with David Bowie?? He collabed with the greatest, Tina Turner, Bing Crosby, Freddie Mercury, an endless list. From his beginnings to his end (Lazarus?) he was one of the greatest artists of our time. Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Fame, Heroes..........

Thanks for this. Song 1968, a year before The Moon Landing, and video 1972,I believe, David was born 2 miles from me in Brixton, South East London, and was one of the greatest artists to come out of England, and that says an enormous amount. He even made songs and accompanying videos about his impending death.

Known as The Chameleon, Bowie was not just a musical force, he was one of the most sophisticated performance artists of our age -- perhaps of several. I say this as a seasoned arts professional, which is to emphasize that we are not known for generous superlatives. Yes, his influence is found in punk, the new romantics/new wave genres, alternative, etc. I'm especially intrigued by your thoughts on the Prince and Bowie connection. I've often said, they were the two sides of the same genius musical coin. Enjoy the journey.

You know how you like how REN and can adapt to any type of music? David Bowie was always leading different genres. Where David went everyone followed. Loved him. He was a fantastic song writer for others and a great producer. One album that springs to mind Is Lou Reeds Transformer album. Try young Americans

David Bowie was unfettered and diverse. He sang songs such as this and also sang one of my favorites with Bing Crosby “Little Drummer Boy”. I had the great fortune to see him in the 70’s in Detroit.

Old fart here... I remember listening to this song over and over when it first came out. Later in the 80s I got to see him live. The concert sold out so fast and I guess they had the time so they added a second night.... So I went again. The single best performer I have ever seen. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. Just an amazing artist. No Space Oddity book or movie but Bowie play the part of an alien in a strange (now cult) movie "the man who fell to earth".

Saw him once.. loved this as a 7 year old kid in early 70s the moon landing was a Huge deal .. no cable no computers no cell phones.. Bowie was a real game changer. Always reinventing himself. RIP
