When Roy Orbison joined The Travelling Willburys (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan) they all were in awe of him. Elvis was a baritone. Roy was a counter tenor. Elvis would have killed for his range.

My dad used to play Roy Orbison all the time growing up.😊 They were pretty close in age. Maybe about a year apart. Elvis Presley was a big fan of Roy orbison. Elvis even once said that he thought Roy had the most perfect voice in the world. Elvis even said that he'd never record one of Roy's songs because he wouldn't be able to do it any better.

The most cruel turn of fates I've seen in my life was when in the middle of of his late 80's comeback, He was taken from us..He'd been through sooo much heartache in his life and deserved to live a lot longer.

Roy was not blind but he did have poor eyesight. He forgot his normal glasses for a performance once so he wore his prescription sunglasses instead and that became his signature look. He was also self-conscious about his almost white hair from a young age and dyed it jet black. Incredible singer and musician.

You need to watch "Black and White Nights". It was a tribute to him. Bruce Springsteen, K. D. Lang, Tom Waites (sort of), I can't remember all of the names that jumped at a chance to play with him. "Pretty Woman" is amazing.

The Traveling Wilbury’s were amazing. I remember listening to them over and over. So much talent in that group. Roy is a legend. No one sounds like him or has such range. He’s just incredible.

The crowd was told to sit and be quiet because it was being recorded. He wrote a lot of hit records for everyone including Elvis.

Many (many) years ago I had the privilege of seeing Roy Orbison in concert - he hit every note and in person his voice was even more thrilling. If you haven't seen the Traveling Wilbury's "End of the Line" or "Handle Me With Care" they're just fantastic - sadly 3 of that super-group (Roy Orbison, Tom Petty & George Harrison) have all passed on but the music lives on. Listen to his song "In Dreams" - it's a heart-breaker.

I watched this video when it was new. I loved your reaction and appreciation for Roy and his music. I'm an Old Broad (b.1954) so I remember hearing Roy on the radio when I was quite young. Only The Lonely and Pretty Woman were on the radio then. I felt so bad for him--he sounded so hurt. Turns out he was hurt-more than folks should be: he lost his wife in a motorcycle (I believe) accident, and 2 of his children in a house fire. He could try to hide that pain behind sunglasses (and poor eye-sight), but he couldn't hide the pain from his voice.

To me, the difference between Roy and Elvis is that Roy’s singing had the power to make me cry because of the pain he showed . I love Elvis’ singing but I don’t cry hearing sing, except for his song, Are You Lonesome Tonight?

Roy Orbison was amazing! I was a teenager in the 60s! It was a time of excitement, opinions, turmoil and war! I feel lucky to have been a part of that generation, although we haven’t done well by yours! We are now old men and women who have lived good lives and we are leaving you in times that are very much like the sixties, both the good and the bad! It looks different but feels much the same.

According to Roy Orbinson's son, Roy forgot his glasses when he went to do a show in Europe. This was before easily replaceable glasses with plastic lenses or easy quick deliveries. He only had his prescription sunglasses to wear. So he wore them in place of his regular glasses. He wore them even during his performances. Later he decided to continue to wear dark glasses for subsequent performances even when he had his regular glasses. The dark glasses became his personal trademark during his performances.

There was no one like Roy. Those songs, that voice! The beauty of his voice is something you can never forget. I loved everything he did, except Pretty Woman which was his biggest hit. Saw him once in concert, toward the end of his career. Still had that gorgeous voice.

Roy wrote Oh, Pretty Woman with friend Bill Dees. Story is his wife Claudette (another song) came in to get money from him and left, walking down the street to go shopping. He and Bill penned that song while she was gone.

My personal favorite of Roy's is Running Scared. My personal connection to that song involves me heading home after my first game playing for my HS football team, after we won, my dad was driving me home listening to the oldies station (this would have been 1988) and that song came on as we pulled out of the parking lot and the song just hit me that (the other teams) "they were running scared". Unfortunately that was our only win of the season we were terrible. LOL But that song and memory stuck with me.

As for the audience, back in those days it was considered good manners to sit quietly in your seat and wait until the song was finished before politely clapping--although when my mom (who was a huge fan) went to see him in concert in the 80's, word has it she screamed like a groupie. lol

Check out Roy in his later career with a group of LEGENDS called "Travelling Wilburys". He's in the music video for "Handle Me With Care". There's another video they made "End of the Line" but Roy passed before they shot the video, so they used an empty chair with just his guitar in shots where he was the vocalist to honor him. Both songs are great - and are masterpieces with some of the greatest rock and roll artists all time: George Harrison (Beatles - RIP), Tom Petty (RIP), Roy Orbison (RIP), Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynne (of Electric Lights Orchestra aka ELO).

It may interest you to know that Roy and Johnny Cash were practically neighbors and would often get together and jam at each others homes...often joined by other talents like Bob Dylan and Chris Christopherson . One could only imagine the genius present in one place
