Actually Journey was supposedly innovators of the in ear monitor. Holding some of the original patents.
@TheBarkinFrog3 күн бұрын
He's using a monitor. You can't hear yourself if you don't have a monitor. You can't tell if you're singing in the same key as the band if you don't have a monitor. Before monitors, we had to either cup our ear or stick a finger over your ear canal to hear yourself. Why would you want to do that, rather than use a monitor? And why do you think there's some sort of virtue in not using a monitor?

Steve Perry's intonation was perfect and his singing effortless. He never showed the work in his vocals, and you never got worried thinking he might not hit "the note". The difference between artists back then versus now is that they had musicianship in the 70's and 80's. They weren't just "entertainers" following along with a click track. I hope he does Journey's Love'in, Touch'in, Squeeze'in next!

That video is from 1981, not 1982. The reason he’s wearing the same shirt is because the videos were taken from the same concert. It was an MTV special concert. Yes, he did wear that animal, print shirt, a lot, and it’s not a halter it’s a T-shirt, but it was his favorite . He wore it because it was extremely comfortable, he said. Open Arms was 1981 on the escape album not 1982. This concert clip is from November 5, 1981 Houston Texas. This was just weeks after the escape album went number one on the Billboard charts. Open Arms hit number two on billboards top 100. It was journey’s highest ranking hot 100 single. You should check out journeys, 1996 video of when you love a woman from their trial by fire album.

True story: I was living in Puerto Rico when this song came out. I was hanging out in my back yard with some neighbors, and Open Arms came on my Boom Box (remember those?). My 14 year old neighbor, Betsy, who did not understand a word of English, broke down crying from the song. Nobody uttered a word through the whole song, not even the little kids, they were mesmerized. I was already a huge Journey fan, so it was no big deal for me.

Journey's "Escape" album was released in July 1981, and the song "Open Arms" was also released on the soundtrack of the film "Heavy Metal" that month. The film was released in August. This concert video was filmed in November 1981 in Houston. The single and video for "Open Arms" was released in January 1982, 6 months after the album was released. "Open Arms" spent 18 weeks on the Hot 100. It debuted on 16 January 1982 and peaked at #2 on 27 February.

Saw Journey twice in CA in early 80s. Not only is Mr. Perry mind blowingly perfect in concert, he’s singing song after song with notes in the stratosphere, but it sounds like the album. As a tenor, and opera fan, I would say Steve is the most operatic of all rockers, with a true Italianate sound. (Warmth and sunshine in his tone). The emotional power his singing conveys alone marks him as the rarest of rock singers. As someone said before, “you don’t hear Perry sing, you feel him sing.

@cassianfalkener3706Ай бұрын
I had to stop watching this reaction. I'm so used to the way the studio version goes, and while I enjoy concerts and the energy and the arrangements of live versions, this one just fell flat. He literally flattened the melody, choosing to sing certain words using the same note, where the studio version varied. Those variations gave the song additional emotional impact, and this version is just unlistenable, by comparison. It's like a cover song from a band that doesn't really get, understand, or even like the original song.
