As commander he bears full responsibility for anything his troops do or don't do. This is true in all armed forces back then and true today as well. When I served I saw commanding officers get relieved of duty for simply missing a few unimportant items after an inspection by higher headquarters. I am sure that the commander had no idea that these items were missing, but because he was ultimately in charge he was held responsible and had to suffer the consequences.

@@davidsalvini7495So in your view General George Patton should be held personally responsible when 3rd Army soldiers massacred 700 prisoners April 1945. Instead Patton described it as an unfortunate incident.

Its only a theory, Germans left a skeleton crew to guard the Americans. All it would've taken is for a few soldiers to make a run for it, there's yelling in German, panic starts to creep in now most of the US soldiers start running. The rest is history. Does anyone know if any German soldiers were questioned that were there?

Ernest Barkman also fought in this battle, he’s a famous tank ace that captured American equipment and used it against the Americans. He also destroyed 3 tanks while towing a tank. It’s amazing how much theses German tank crews did, with the little support and equipment they had available to them. Truly brave men that history will never forget.

Peiper was a bloody good officer. He took responsibility for the actions of his men. As only a good officer would. Even if doing so. Would mean his execution. As for Malmady. The allies did the same. On many occasions. But by virtue of their victory. These incidents are forgotten. Peiper served the sentence served on him by a court of law. But was Murdered by faceless cowards in the night. My Grandfather served in the British Army from 1914/1919. He respected the Germans. But despised the French. I think I can see why.

His unit was known as the blowtorch battalion because they used blowtorches to thaw out frozen engines, no other reason. The case about Boves was thrown out after 126 of his men all signed affidavits that neither of the senior officers Peiper, Dinse or Guhrs ordered civilians killed or were present when any killing took place.

At Peiper's show trial he reminded the Court of the motto of the British Commandos..."No quarter asked and none given". The Allies were murdering pigs and hypocrites, and I'm very tired of our sick culture going after the reputation of this man and others like him. General Patton so riled up the soldiers of the 45th US Infantry Division the "Thunderbirds" in a speech that they immediately went out a shot many German prisoners. The incident was covered up by the Victors. The Anglo-Saxon terror bombing of the Reich and our fire bombing of the Japanese home islands was murder on a massive scale. We have no room to complain about this incident of war.

I am going to do a video sometime this spring on the trial. In reading the trial transcripts, the trial was for a series of events, which included the Malmedy Massacre. As we used to say, leadership perpetuated a "command climate" that is why Sepp Dietrich was part of the crew on trial. It was about the orders passed down through the chain of command. The court convicted everyone, but they were all out in a couple of years. I can't wait to dig into this story.
