During the Roman times, there was a horrific method of execution used in which struck fear into the hearts of the people. Throughout history many brutal methods of execution were used from hanging, drawing and quartering to the breaking wheel, but the Romans were known for using animals to execute criminals. Penalty of the Sack (Poena Cullei) was a horrific and brutal execution method, in which a condemned prisoner who had been sentenced to death for patricide or murdering a parent was secured inside of a leather or linen sack. They were sometimes whipped before they were placed in the sack being placed in rather bloodied.
But then the sack was tied up and the prisoner would suffer, as they were then thrown into the sea or a nearby river. This was used for those convicted of murdering a family member, and was considered the ultimate punishment. It was so shocking that some Emperors did not like to order Poena Cullei as it was known, and it was even used in the Medieval period inside of Germany. Usually the animals used in the method were venomous snakes, dogs, roosters and monkeys.
