These items were once very common indeed. They turn up in graves from the iron age to the late medieval period, and were worn both men and women. It is a simple design with a simple mechanism. There were also sometimes used as weapons, which should please the blood-thirsty.

If the needle isn't extremely long, you'd be more at danger when that is pivoting about (presumably you're trying to fasten it blind, and the pin could flop around; fastening it pin-away from the neck would add the distance of the ring to the length of needle currently pointing towards your neck) than when it's fastened correctly. Though that's more for annulars and pseudo-penannulars than regular penannulars.

No, Scrath Folchester, Arthur was Welsh, and so he was the head of the dragon. Arthur Pendragon can mean the rather impressive Bear-king Dragonhead.

+Rynosaur94 it's because people were getting pennanulated in the throat too often, which wasn't a problem back in the day, but as the american justice system came about, whoever made those got sued to oblivion.

I picked up one of these at a medieval festival last year made of blackened iron and twisted at both ends. Works a treat and goes great with my black crow cloak.

I'm a 3d artist for video games. I made an in-game outfit recently that included almost exactly what you wore in the video, but I didn't know the name of what this style of clothing was. Wish I had seen this beforehand but in any case thank you yet again for the information Loyd!

I saw a Penannular today in sweden and talked with my partner about your video on Penannulars. Tried a hat on and some guy came and stood in the way of my mirror and talked about Penannulars I suppose. Had to ask him: Are you Lindy Beige? Hot danm it was you. I was too weired out by my accidental Lindy Beige summoning to stay and talk more with you. I guess it's not entirely random you are at a meadival market, but in combination that I just takes about you and you being all over to this swedish town freaked me out. I did came back for the hat tho.

Just made several such. I'm Planning to use them at outdoor fall/winter/early spring dulcimer performances; if nothing else, they can hold my poncho/surapi closed on windy days.

perhaps a reason for having two sturdy annular brooches was to (ideally at least) make it more difficult to remove or lose a dress or have an embarrassing reveal in front of all your mates. I can imagine something like that quickly evolving into a symbol of modesty or decency or other fashion symbolisms

Viking cloak fastener pin! It's a viking brooch cloak fastener thingamabob. Penann... Peninansulat... Viking cloak pin. Finally a video that shows how it works. Thank you, mr. Lindybeige, sir. Oh, and that colour. I know. It's sort of off brown, not white. Should be a name for it, really. Such a pleasing, warm, soil like colour. Oh, well.

I used to have a really twiddly annular brooch with lovely knotwork on it... Pain in the rear to get it on and off of things, but very pretty. I lost it (and the cloak it was fastened to) a while back :( (And I left my torc in a charity shop changing room... I shouldn't be entrusted with nice things)

Got my thinking a bit of emytholgy there... Penannular-> shortened to "pen"-> shifted to "pin" for the pin in the middle-> shifted back to "pen" as in "pin shaped writing device"

I got one of these in Ireland some years ago, looked everywhere for a real one since like %99 of them had a modern pin on the back and the old pin part was fixed. Mine has dragons on the circle part, worth every penny of the 25 euros.

I long considered getting a penannular for my cloak, but didn't like the way it punctures a big hole in the cloth. Eventually I invented a type of clasp that I could sew to the inside less conspicuously.

I used some 1/4 round stock scrap I had kicking around but I think making one out of a square nail might look nice.

Toothygrin Old garage door springs are what I forge mine from. If you do it with a file, shape it so its more like a "D" than an "O", and quench the strait part of the "D", you can make a penannular brooch (I call em cloak pins) that doubles as a flint and steel striker, as well as an awl, so essentially a 3 in 1 tool!

I use a penannular brooch with my woollen blankets when I'm camping. Stronger and more durable than a safety pin and harder to lose on a tent pitch too.

What about ringed pin ? You find a lot of those in the viking world, originating from Ireland, I have never seen those worn, only a drawing of how it was worn, and it's quite strange.
