Fair and honest review, and that is why I really enjoy your content. I agree with almost all of your points, except I rated Pendulum an 7.5 out of 10 (initially 8.5 because of the refreshing feel it gave at first). For me, it fills a niche that we had empty, and it does give a nice change of pace to our usual games so it will stay in our collection.

Thanks for another great video! As always, we agree on many things, but not all of them! I agree on the theme, it’s horrible, and not there! When it comes to the board and graphic design, I think they made the right choice. They made it easy to see everything, which is super important in a game like this. Does the board look boring? Oh yes! Can I see everything I need, and does it make the game easy to play? Also yes! I’m choosing playability over look every single day! When it comes to your big point of «if you take away the timers, then there isn’t anything there» I find a very strange critique. You might not enjoy the game, and that’s fine, but it’s obvious that the timers/real time element is the game. That it’s a very simple game underneath, makes a lot of sense, or it would be way too complicated to play as a real time game. To say that this is boring without the timers, feels to me like saying Carcassonne is boring if you take away the meeples. Pendulum isn’t a game without the timers, so why talk about taking them away? I do understand that there is a «non timed» element here, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how the designer wants you to play the game, or experience it. It would be very hard to make an interested game untimed that also would work timed. Also, I have heard many people say that the solo mode is bad, and I can’t say anything about it. Also, I liked the 3/4 player more than 2, but not a huge lot more, and I don’t understand the critisism of it being more boring with 2 than 3. If you watch our play through, there isn’t a lot of «waiting» time, and the time we are waiting, I am planning my next moves, like I am doing with downtime in every single other game. This feels different, but still is kind of the same in that regards! So, I agree with a lot of what you are saying, maybe even more than usual, but I did find the game enjoyable and different. Is it a masterpiece? No, by no means, but I was happy to get to play it! Again, thanks for the review! I respect (most of) your views, even though we disagree on a lot 🤪 Keep it up!

Ha ha! :-) So professional! :-) The game gives you the option of taking the timers away so it's still worth considering what that variant feels like. And when teaching new players I HAVE to use that setup for at least 25% of the game. And that 25% is drawn out and boring. So it hits me that the timer is all the game is, but I have XCOM that is real-time, but more fun and is done with an app and not an unreliable sand timer. And timers are just a mechanic - you can insert them into many games and make it real-time. But there needs to be a reason for them being there, as we agree, this game has no thematic connection. With 2 players or solo, I just find myself waiting a lot for timers. Once you've played your meeples, you don't really have much else to do, but you don't have the chaos (or tension) of other players at the table with only 2. The solo mode actually blocks more spaces you want then 2 player mode does. It's certainly different, it's innovative, but I do wish the timer mechanic was interwoven with a game that wasn't just a dry cube pusher.

I have only played this 5 times so far, but I have to disagree on a lot of points. The first big one is the aesthetics. I think they are perfect for this game. The art is extremely detailed & yet it is not distracting from the game play. I think this is an amazing accomplishment & a necessary one for the real time aspect of this game. Secondly, I love the real time Euro. I get so frustrated with AP players, & this completely eliminates it. You have to make a decision. Thirdly, I think the asymmetry is fantastic. The characters (while maybe not thematic) each play differently on their advanced sides. The asymmetry is what keeps me coming back to try different methods to victory. My biggest complaint with this game is the rule book. I thought it was awkwardly written.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
Instead of waiting for players you are waiting for timers. What art? The only artwork of note is the player boards character portraits. The cards and board have next to no art. The asymmetry is barely noticeable and given you basically have provinces and the odd card to differentiate you, paths to victory are not varied either. This game I'll go heavy on blue, this game I'll do red, we're just leveling dull tracks.

I played a 4 player untimed game & it took almost 3 hours. With the timers it was about an hour, so I’ll take waiting for the timers over players 😅 I like the board art. It may be simplistic to some, but I like how it looks like a table. And I really like the province card art. Harken is one of my favorites. For asymmetry, I think starting cards you get help a lot. Mesoat the Pacifist not being able to unlock a worker made me think in a new way (for example) I’m not expecting us to agree, but I am glad I really enjoy this one. An hour for a thinky Euro is a highlight for me. I hope you like the next Stonemaier release, and if not, there are at least 1000 other games to pick from each year 😂

Kinda sorta reminds me of a mobile "hurry up and wait" game made into a board game. You know those ones where you go to the "stonecarver" or the "barracks" and then have a 5 minute Real Time timer on being able to do it again?

I can somewhat understand how they ended up with the rather bland cards and tiles (what are they again? "provinces"?)... While it seems the timers are the strong point of the game, they also probably caused this particular issue in my opinion - you can't have "interesting" cards if the game is real time, players need to be able to process what they have in hand or what they are taking at a glance... I personally passed on the game as soon as I saw the first pictures of the board :( Bland is the right word to describe all of it...

Eh, games don't need theme. Mechanics are king. Slap whatever theme on you want, I don't care. Thanks for the review. My biggest issue with these types of real-time games is unintentional cheating. Doesn't sound like they solved that.

I feel this is at heart a mechanic with a game loosley thrown behind it. How does the name Pendulum even fit the game? Time? Really. The timers could have represented different regions and been thematically represented on the board. Big miss for me.

@@wsiegel9539 Have you played the game? There is nothing "personal" going on here. I made a general point about attacking the work of others without having actually engaged with that work. Again, have you played the game? I didn't say you cannot attack the designer. Read what I said and don't read more into it than what I said. If you played the game, have at it ... trash it. I suspect you have not played it.

OK calm down lads. Chuck, nothing in Siegels original post appeared like a direct attack against the designer. It's a reasonable statement to make as even before I played it, this appeared like A Euro game with timers bolted on. Even after plays, it doesn't feel much different. The rulebook explains the Pendulum aspect but let's face it nothing of that comes through in the game mechanics. Theme is like the last thing talked about even by fans of the game. A designer may spend hours on a design of a game, that doesn't give them a free pass from opinion when they make something bad or get it wrong from that persons perspective. Concordia I'm sure had a ton of effort put into it, I still think it's boring, mind numbing garbage! 😋 I respect that you love the game and have your good reasons for that as discussed here but you can't keep putting others on an inquisition.

For those of you criticizing the game, I am wondering if you actually played it. I had my doubts about this one, but picked it up and I am really enjoying it. It’s unique and I am looking forward to getting it to the table again, which is a sign of a keeper. The theory of why the game is not good is meaningless. What matters is what happens when you play it. By the way, the theme sucks and I wish it was better.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
Good for you if you like it. I didn't get the same feeling of enjoyment outside of the tension of the timer mechanic. But without that mechanic, you are left with the most barebones of "push your cube" Euro games - something that should never be said about any Stonemaier game.
@chuckm1961
@chuckm1961 3 жыл бұрын
The Broken Meeple OK. I think that designer, the publisher and all of us know that there is a very basic engine underneath the game. That the timers are the whole game. If you just don’t enjoy the game, that’s cool. What I don’t understand is a criticism that “the game is not good because, if hypothetically this part was not in the game, then the game would not be anything.” Again, that timer mechanic is the heart and soul of the game. The theme should have been more interesting, like rescuing people or accomplishing a mission on a time crunch. And again, referencing my first post, what is going to drive me crazy is people who criticize the game without ever playing it. There appears to be a growing number who relish disliking games by Stonemaier and making sure everyone knows it. I am in no way saying you are one of those people. But you and I both know they are a vocal minority.
@TheBrokenMeeple
@TheBrokenMeeple 3 жыл бұрын
If they haven't played the game, agreed, don't review it. When I thought back to myself as to what I enjoyed in the game, all I could think of was the timers, but that only goes so far especially when you then realise that the timers are basically enabling you to gather cubes and then pay cubes to level up on tracks. I can't make that sound exciting!
