I can't believe how much I enjoy these vids. I would happily do this as a career. Mind you I am a plumbing and heating engineer. That was a whopper of a route.

This is exactly what happened in our downstairs toilet. The builders of the house accidentally broke part of the pipe and so they just covered it in duck tape, and so eventually roots started growing and destroyed the pipes

Oh yes, tree roots are a huge problem with pipes. Especially old ones. People who try to build fish ponds too close to trees get problems with roots very quickly. Especially willow trees. They can be far off and still cause a problem with roots because they seek out water. If there is moisture you can bet roots will seek out the pipes. Especially willow trees.

Shattered drain tile also then the basement wall starts falling in e.t.c. fun stuff. The best part impossible to get an excavator into the back yard!!! All had to be done by hand.

Oh heck yeah roots are quite destructive if left unchecked. We ban willow trees these days not because of the roots though. We get a lot of big storms and weak trees like willows get uprooted and topple over on people too much. But trees like eucalyptus are also banned because they tend to suddenly drop massive branches.

Especially considering some of the 'pipes' that were used in the past. I used to have a root problem and had to call the plumber out to clear the pipe several times till I had that section dug up and replaced. Turned out the sewer line wasn't actually a pipe but more like those curved clay tiles people sometimes put on their roof set in the ground for the sewage to flow through.

Had that problem back home. Tried a rental snake to clear out the pipes, but no go. Had to dig up the pipe running from the house to the street. Culprit? Willow roots.

You can't do this with a septic tank, but if you have a regular sewer, about once a month, pour a box of rock salt in the toilet, it will kill the roots.

Would vinegar do the same thing? I use it on weeds above the ground and it kills them right away!

@@cherylmack1260 he idea of the rock salt is for it to dissolve slowly over time. Vinegar would just flow right past the roots, while the salt crystals would get tangled up in the roots.

Plumber here. That’s a pretty big one. Biggest root ball I’ve pulled out was about 7 feet long and all but a small channel of water on top was getting by. Pulled it out with a sewer cable

This takes me back to about 1970 when our Services Tutor showed us a length of 4" salt glazed pipe, solidly blocked by root. (No Guys! Willow root, Not your Australian interpretation. 😎) All it took was one hairline crack. It fascinated me then. It fascinates me now. It will fascinate me when you go back to the same problem in a couple of years.

my old place had those grated drains surrounding the place. They would start to overflow in heavy rain, I'd go out an remove the one section of grate at the end to the pipe. Very satisfying, like breaking the vacuum and it would just race away.

I would totally try some marine grade hardening epoxy resin. It would be the strongest part of the system. If it still leaked your not out much money. Just some effort and the rest would be cut out anyways.

I couldn't help wonder if a metal stove pipe slid down in as a liner would help. The epoxy is something I'd try to get in place just before that.
