What filmmakers who use jumpscares don't understand is that startling is not the same thing as scaring.

@@willowormThe original phrase is super old lol
@im2arrogant1189 ай бұрын
Well there are two types of scares, shock and tention, a jumpscare has shock value and isn't inherently bad, but on it's own it's only half of the equasion. A horror piece (film or game) needs both shock and tention to achieve good scares. Also jumpscares are obviously not the only way to achieve shock just the most convenient. A good example of a good use is when you raise the tention of the scene after the jumpscare instead of dispell it, that way it overloads the viewer and makes it less fleeting.
@reversalmushroom9 ай бұрын
@@im2arrogant118 To me, horror is when what you're seeing makes you feel real emotions like dread or regret. Like when you see all the failed Ripley clones in Alien Resurrection or when Charlie dies in Hereditary and Peter goes home and waits for their mom's inevitable reaction.
@im2arrogant1189 ай бұрын
@@reversalmushroom Regret isn't necessarily a 'scary' emotion and therefore doesn't fall under the same definition, but I get what you mean. Otherwise both examples fall under the tension category I mentioned. Shock is when an immediate reaction is elicited. Tension is when a feeling is being built up over time. Like I said, everything 'scary' falls under those 2 factors. Hereditary especially is incredibly adept at using tension, the scene you mentioned being a great example of it. I'm obviously simplifying my explanations here drastically as to not write a novel in a yt comment, but I hope I make enough sense.

Not really. Universal HAD to promise a trilogy in order to get the rights, and they had to get their streaming service Peacock to handle the sequels if need be so that they could guarantee that the sequels would be made one way or another, and this deal was made before the streaming bubble began to burst, in a time when Netflix paid nearly $500 million for the rights to two Knives Out sequels.

@@troin3925 What I mean was when the substantial growth streaming was having began to slow down last year and investors began to question studios that had their own streaming services on how exactly they were planning to make them profitable after spending ludicrous amounts of money on exclusive content for them. This is part of the reason why there’s been stuff in the last year and a half like price hikes, the introduction of and focus on ad-supported tiers, crackdowns on password sharing, and content being pulled from streaming services or canned all together in the name of tax write offs or cost cutting, as well as a renewed focus on licensing content out to other streaming services. The fact of the matter is that with the exception of Netflix (and even they have shown to not be completely immune to all this), streaming isn’t really a substantial business, and the studios that had their own streaming services were caught off guard when the streaming bubble began to burst.

Charlie mentioning the jumpscares where they're just talking or doing something mundane is definitely true, but I know exactly why they did it. Because the original did, but they missed the execution and the purpose. The original had scenes where the main character would be just lying down or talking to a doctor and they would subtly flash a frame of a demon, meant to represent that the demon who possessed them is present and make the viewer feel dread. But, of course, they didn't use a noise or overuse it. I actually love the Exorcist 3's big jumpscare of the movie, so I feel like there is a proper way to use them and this new one didn't know how.

This movie doesn't do it as strong as the original, but much of the flashing at least has to do with what they're discussing or relates somewhat to what's happening in the movie. And I think it keeps the viewer on edge and a little anxious, so long as they're willing to be invested in the movie they're watching. The flashing Imagery isn't used as good as the original, but a lot of this movie does what the original did well enough, and I think it's recieving too much flack for it

Charlie! I met you last night and asked for a picture! I wanted to say something that I didn’t get a chance to say! People love you and your content because you’re genuine, have a great moral compass, and a great sense of humor. You don’t have a massive editing team behind you or anything. It’s just you, your camera, and your personality. I really do love it. I think there’s proof of that in your follower count but I just wanted to be able to say thank you! Thanks for letting my boys and I take that picture what a special moment.

Hollywood is terrified of letting established and complete franchises rest on their laurels and take chances on new IPs. Hopefully this L will be a lesson to them. They have to learn eventually that people arent just gonna show up for a movie just because they know it. You have to put in effort and actually create something good and worth showing up for.

honestly I just saw it and i think it suffers the most from just not knowing what its suppose to be. It tries to be so many things, and fails at all of them. Honestly just hilarious the amount of money seen dropped into this film to see blumhouse who is used to not trying but with low risk, actually take a gamble and fail so spectacularly

It's sad that the industry has become so oversaturated and only choosing to invest in shows or movies that are already established IPs. I hear it's so bad that scriptwriters have been going backward for a while to turn their script into a published book so that it may hopefully be adapted on screen.

The reason they used those flashing images was because, in the original, there are interlaced frames of disturbing images used to create a subliminal feeling of dread. They happen so quickly that the viewer hardly has time to register it. At some point, after the original was released, censorship laws made it illegal to use subliminal imagery/messaging in any form of media. Thats why they have to make it more apparent this time around.

13:25 that’s Rumplestiltskin and it’s actually a smart implication for a movie about exorcising demons. In biblical context, saying the creature’s name means you have power over it (think back to genesis when Adam was naming all the animals). That’s also why demons don’t say their name because they don’t want to give away their power to their victims.
