Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.
You can join Young Martin’s Reels on Facebook@ YoungMartin’sReels | Facebook
If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZfaq videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Man, Rick, that Fierce IV is a cornucopia of parts! That ultrasonic cleaner can't come soon enough!

In my hands, those bearing shields would be coming off to ensure the best cleaning possible. I sometimes encounter bearings where the shields are permanently affixed. I'll take those shields off too because my philosophy is it's better to have an open bearing than one with old gunk stuck within. I don't service other people's reels though. The guy who owns this reel should pick up something like a used Penn 700, 704, or 710 for the beach, and learn to service it. Service time is significantly reduced vs reels like the Penn Fierce and similar, and the design of these reels is such that water intrusion from splashing and quick dunking can be significantly curtailed with application of grease in certain places. Alternatively, he can pay some big bucks for a fully sealed reel.

And I commend you for your diligence. I’ve attempted to the remove those shields in the past and I have neither the eyesight nor the dexterity to make it happen. Even with 3X readers and my big magnifying glass I can’t see those shield retainers. I have managed to get 2 of them off and I only successfully reinstalled one of them. If I can’t clean the bearings using solvent and compressed air, they are getting replaced.

The other thing to remember is that not everyone has an aptitude for mechanical things. To you an early model reel may seem simple but to others it can be an impossible task. I just advised him that next time he dunks one he should rinse it off and bring it to me as quickly as possible.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I'm not there yet but I hear you. My eyes are getting old and stiff; they don't like to focus up close any more and, when I force them to do so for more then a few minutes, I end up with blurry vision for hours afterward. I feel the loss but I can't complain, because so many people around me suffer with vision problems much worse than mine.

I’ve never been more impressed than I was watching Chris work on reels. He had to hold the reels within a few inches to see them at all, and yet he’s managed to service and repair hundreds of reels.

@@youngmartinsreels5314 I've assumed anybody can do this stuff if they put their mind to it but, now that I think about it, hmmm.... I need to give your statement about mechanical aptitude further thought. Thanks.

I do not like what I saw in that spool! It doesn’t take much when a reel is dunked to cause a lot of damage to a reel. Even the baitfeeders lever had sand all under it. This is not looking good. The side plate did not look much better. Rick, you’ve got a difficult cleaning task ahead. I’m also concerned about the condition of the main gear. I once lost a Quantum Cabo reel to a situation similar to this. That was back when the Quantum Cabo was a very expensive high end spinning reel. Man that rotor was a mess. I am so glad I don’t have to work on this reel. It gives me a headache to think about it. Uh-oh - no AR override! Not good. - Chris
