Penn Reel Drag Sticking Fix For Pursuit 2 Models

A Penn Pursuit reel are an excellent choice. Oil the drag system periodically to keep it from sticking. In this video I service the parts that need to be lubricated on a 6000 to keep it from getting stuck.
This maintenance repair was suggested to me by 2nd Chance Tackle. He has a KZfaq video where he tears down this brand and model reel and reassembles it. When I was having problems with the drag sticking on my Penn Pursuit reel I found his video and asked some questions in the comment section. He was very kind and offered to share his wisdom with me.
There's another issue with these reels that may be encountered; the spool might be a very tight fit on the shaft of the reel. I'd suggest that when you purchase your reel to check that out right away. You don't want to have to do like I did and sand the shaft down in order for the spool to fit nicely.

Same issue with my 2 year old Fierce II 6000 LL. Frozen drag, stuck spool. Thanks for being here with the answer. Never seen a spool so tight - all I could do to finally pull it free. Sanded the shaft, lightly reamed and cleaned the spool hole, cleaned and oiled the drag washers. Back in business with a reel that I love to fish.

Glad I came across your video. I have a new Pursuit 3 that I was having the same issues with. Less than six months old and the spool was sticking and the drag was terrible. This fixed both issues! Thank you.

What I did with my pursuits is I shaved some out of the hole in the center of the spool that goes over the shaft. It’s made of a cheap material that seems to shrink over time and tighten up around the shaft. Never have had this problem with the reel straight out of the box, the drag is nice and smooth. But over time; like maybe a year or so, it gets jerky, sticks, and you can’t back off on the drag to make it loose. Your method of sanding down the shaft works of course, however I am impatient, don’t like working with metal, and just look for quick fixes. So I just take a small pocket knife and gently shave some of that plastic out of the center of the spool, and then good as new. Smooth drag and you have the ability to back off on the drag til it’s really loose, and your drag is also working right when at a higher setting for larger fish, spool slides on and off the shaft nicely for when you do need to work on the drag system. It isn’t a drag issue, the felt washers are fine imho..it’s that tight center of the spool disabling your drag from having a chance to do its job. For the money; and due to how quick and easy this is to fix when and if it happens, it is no big deal and I will continue to buy these reels. Hopefully they will resolve this with the pursuit 4 model if and when it comes out. The main gear of these reels will wear down and strip over time and there’s not really any sort of maintenance that can be done to prevent that which I am aware of. But the part is available off the website for like $4-$5.

Thanks for posting this video. I, too, just experienced some stuck drag issues on my Penn Pursuit III. This was super helpful to take apart the reel and clean & grease up the washers. I also sprayed some Penn Rod & Reel Cleaner on some of the other moving parts while in there. I think the grease needs to set it a little but this seems to have done the trick.

Great video bub. My spool was so gummed on there I wasn't sure it was supposed to come off like that. I had to give it everything I had to get it off.

It’s due to the hole in the middle of the spool that goes over the shaft shrinking. I have pursuit II and III 4000s and this happened to both. Cheap material. Other than that, good affordable spinning reel.

I have another sugestion, instead of keep oiling the felt washers forever try to replace them with carbon washers. They last longer and give better performance. Intead of oil you have to grease them justo a little bit. You could buy the ones for the Penn Battle II or instead buy a sheet of carbontex material from Ebay and made washers for all your reels. I enjoy your videos very much.

Thanks David, the reel repair professional that I linked in the description suggested something like that as well. I might check into that some day. It really only takes about five minutes to clean things and oil them up. If at some point the felt gets torn or worn, I'll try the carbon...

Hi dear. I have a 5000 pursuit 2 . It still spin very smoothly after one year of use but the issue that I have is the drag The drag knob assembly turn with the spool when I pull the line I did oiled all the washers drag, it doesn't work. Any solutions Regard

I changed out the drag washers with carbon fiber washers off eBay and no more issues.

I bought a penn wrath 8000 to use for shark fishing, however every time I get a bite the line gets broken off because when the shark pulls the drag the drag some how gets tighter and tighter by itself. I have never ever encountered this problem with any other reel and have no idea what is causing it, do you thing this would do the trick? Also, I love your videos man -- haha cant believe im watching a video from three years ago XD keep up the good work!

I am going to replace my felt washers with carbon fiber available from Amazon or Ebay. This was one of the upgrades with the new Pursuit III.

Thanks for sharing Greg. I didn't know they released a Pursuit 3. My reels work great now that I've oiled them up and worked on the spool shafts a bit.

The Pursuit 3 also uses a spool that is braid ready requiring no backing. Other than that they are the same reel.

News flash oil doesn't dissolve salt, water does. Clean / flood with Windex and oil with mineral oil;. The reason the spools wont come off is not a defect it is because salt got in and froze it up normally inside the spool. Clean the hole out with Windex and use a nylon rifle bore brush. \

Thanks for commenting. Those are some good tips. I'm pretty sure the stuck spool was a manufacturing issue. I had a problem getting the spool off of my Penn Pursuit 4000 very soon after purchasing it. Also, I tried cleaning the spool hole and the shaft vigorously before resorting to sanding the shaft down. Anyway, everything that I've done to improve the Penn Pursuit's performance has been working great on all three of my reels since making this video.

You are welcome. I run a lathe for a hobby and know a lot about tolerances from being a millwright some time ago. Some times they can be too close. There is a chart on fits for different sizes that runs across the board. They are called running fits press fits driving fits and so on. I have no idea what Penn oil has in it probably just some sort of over priced mineral oi. 3 in one is garbage and will dry out and varnish. A class II free running fit for a 1/4 to 1/8 shaft and hole is maximum of 0.0022 minimum 0.0004. You can find this stuff on line.

So after trying this my drag was no longer stuck . However was still too tight. After lightly sanding the shaft with some used sand paper it's working great.

Hello I'm having problems with my Penn Pursuit II 5000. It goes forward and in reverse after I greased it. It did not do that before the maintenance I did on it. It was only going foward, but now I can't figure it out how to stop it going in reverse. Any advise?

unspool line or not then spray with wd--40 and or soak in oil or kerosene mineral sprits over night used gloves and elbow grease if not loose repeat with more wd40

I just had the same issue with my feirce 2ll reels. Both woukd not come off. Had to soak in some penetrating oil then used a nut driver to fit over the shaft and gave it taps until it loosened up. My drag was still tight and choppy even with no drag washers and knob, so im gonna polish down the shaft and see how that goes.

Order new felts from Penn. They aren't expensive. I wonder if the Pursuit 3 drag will replace the Pursuit 2 drag. The drag on the 3 is MUCH smoother and doesn't use the felt.

I have a Pursuit II as well, but my issue is that I can still pull some drag when it is all the way tight. It's not free spool loose, but it doesn't take much to pull it. Any suggestions on how to fix this. I have no one locally to take it to for repair, so I have to do it. It's not under warranty anymore. I've literally only used it about 5 times and have only caught 1 large'ish fish on it.

I had the exact same issue with my Penn Fierce II 6000LL, I watched that same video of the guy sanding down the shaft. It worked like a charm but I’m a little upset I had to do it in the first place. It’s obviously a manufacturing defect if it keeps happening to people.

To free stuck parts....use PB Blaster, available in auto parts store or home center , works like nothing else.

I have a Penn Battle 6000, that even PB blaster didn't free up to get off the shaft, what I did was place the edge of the spool on a hard edge (like a work bench), had someone pull on the body of the reel, and take a hammer to the top of the spool shaft, but did it very carefully so I didn't damage anything. Sometimes you need a BFH when all else fails!
