Dear Dennis, just followed this after watching your other video on the older black sided 4/0 (comparing it to the 113h). Exactly the same story as when I followed your Sqidder video - a spotless, gleaming reel, working perfectly and catching fish again. Got a Delmar (just for the fun of it) and a Mitchell 386 to go and I wander whether I will ever use my slick but boring Shimano's again. I was given my vintage reels by an old boy 35 years ago in a hessian sack. They had corrosion and were stiff when I opened that forgotten same bag some 4 months ago when I arrived back in the UK after living in NJ, USA. They would have been ditched if I hadn't seen your channel. As an engineer myself I marvel at the simple design and the quality of the materials used. These old timers go for about 25 bucks over here. When you think of the cost of modern multipliers these are a realistic cheap option if you don't mind spending an hour to open them up and giving them a clean and grease/oil. Thanks again Dennis, everyone asks me about my vintage reels on the shore.

Thank you for this tutorial. It saved me from the headaches in disassembling and reassembling my reel for my first time.

Back in the days of my youth; while working as a certified auto mechanic, I learned several tricks to help assemble items like carburetors. One was to take a screw and grind the head off, so it can fit through the hole of the part that is held by a regular screw. Making sure that there is a slot to accept a flathead screwdriver. Thus, forming a stud that can be installed and removed with a flathead screwdriver. I am sure you must have extra bridge screws. If two (four would be better) newly made studs temporarily installed on the bridge plate, then the plate can be installed which lines up all the screw holes. Now one at a time, a stud could be removed with a flathead screwdriver and the actual screw be installed on the already lined up bridge plate. If the new studs are long enough, screwdriver may not be needed either. Not teaching the “sensei”, just a suggestion. Thanks for posting.

Hi Dennis, thanks for the video, just completed my senator, everything works well except the brake on the none handle side, no matter how tight I tighten it the spool keeps spinning. I ordered another one from MP ….. this is my first senator, I don’t know if it’s true but I was told that it’s common with senators.

Good video as I already dismantled my 200M and was trying to figure out how that flat spring went back in. should have watched the video first. Only comment would be that you move out of camera view a bit. Very helpful!!

I recently acquired a 4/0 special. It has the drag stack access by just removing the crank handle. It has the thick black washers. I was wanting to upgrade it to the HT100's. Do I have to buy additional washers to complete the upgrade? Great video. Thank you.

Dennis, please help. Followed directions but after a few turns the free spool clutch doesnt engage. I take it apart and everything works. Put it back together and it wont pop backward all the way. Any idea what might be happening? Great videos. Thanks

Hi Dennis, love the videos. Could the tarnished look on the chrome actually be the brass showing from beneath where the chrome has worn? I fixed up my Grandpap’s old Levelwind 350 (thanks to your video!) that’s gotta be 60 years old. The chrome was so corroded that some of it just sloughed off when I put the steel wool to it, and it has that tarnished look now, too.

Great video, a little too fast with the rebuild and at times the reel is out of sight, but it worked for me.

great vid Dennis. Question: when I pulled off the main gear, the drag stack was literally seized into a single unit and I was unable to get it out of the main gear housing. Any tricks for getting it out or do I just buy a new drag stack and main gear? The reel is a Made in USA 113H Senator Special vintage 1970. Thanks.

Thanks. Great video. I have an older Black 4/0 (likely from the 1950's) that is in great shape but has been sitting for decades. I decided to put it back into service and noticed that the eccentric lever position is opposite my other 4/0 reels. When the level is pushed forward the reel is in free spool mode which is opposite of my Red 4/0 reels. Is this by design or did someone long ago reverse something during a repair? Thanks

Dennis, I just got a 113H 4/0 that's on its way. I plan to fish it, and not get restore into mint shape. There looks to be some light oxidation and imperfections in the rings and spool. I have chlorinated brake cleaner (red CRC can) around already. If I disassemble, can I soak the metal in the brake cleaner and then hit with 0000 steel wool?

Was just wondering why after changing out my drag washers on a 112h senator is there is no drag when in the lock position. It's like the real is in free spool all the time ?

Dennis, Just got a new old stock left Hand 4/0 But it seems that the spool is very wobbly (wobbles from side to side) 1/4 inch about. What could the problem be? I tightened the oil center plug but the spool still seems loose. What am I doing wrong?

I know this is an older video but, I’ve taken apart 2 PENN special senators 4:0 and serviced and oiled them both and both of them now do not work because of this smaller thick washer that comes off when I remove the spool

I love all your videos, but not this one. You seem to just rush like crazy through it. I had to stop and rewind several times and often still did not get my answer. As you know the 113H has several slight variations and mine has a totally different drag. You said "this is a 6 washer drag" then opened it and said "no its an 8" My drag was totally different and parts you pulled out in less than a second I played with for 10 minutes and decided If I pulled them out I'd have to beeak something to do so. I wish you'd redo this showing various 113Hs and go slower. I appreciate all your vids and apologize for complaining but thought you'd appreciate knowing...thanks

The red sided 112H is a 3/0 size reel. The red side 113H is a 4/0 reel. It’s not a collar. Its called a yoke. Its not a transition piece its called a jack. These videos show you how to take them apart and put back together but the practice he uses is terrible. All parts should be removed, cleaned, greased, and placed in position correctly. You grease the bridge screws first them put them in the side plate. Grease the yoke, jack, eccentric, pinion gear before putting in place. Remove the gear sleeve from the bridge, grease the post, and install the gear sleeve. Grease under the rings and all screws so there will be no corrosion.
