Penn State at Indiana 1994 GAME STORY

In a game where Penn State was far and away better than a respectable and fired-up Indiana squad, the final score threw off pollsters around the country. As the Hoosiers sold out to stop Penn State's run game, Collins was as sharp as can be in the passing game, yet two questionable decisions led to interceptions which kept the game close in the first half. After halftime the running game began to produce and Penn State started to pull away from Indiana, and along with two touchdowns that were called back because of penalties, this game had all the makings of a typical 1994 56-14 blowout. It wasn't though, and the 35-29 final score had the Hoosier fans acting like they had won the game at the end.
Penn State moved onto an 8-0 record as Indiana dropped to 5-4.

Ki-Jana Carter: 20 carries, 192 yards, TD
Kerry Collins: 20-32, 213 yards, 2 TD
Freddie Scott: 5 catches, 65 yards, TD

First time I’ve seen this game in 30 years since I was there in person. Happened exactly as I remembered it…2 overturned TDs on ify calls…should have scored 45 points.

I've never seen a team get so excited about a loss. Why would you go for two just to make it look closer? Indiana is just sad.

28:00: This was such a garbage call. PSU grazed the QB's helmet, not his facemask.

These refs totally sucked. Among other bad calls... 11:39: Freddie Scott clearly ripped the ball away from the DB. Should have been PSU ball.

Indiana had a feeling that, even with a loss, they had just played spoiler and put an end to Penn State’s national title hopes. They were right!

First, that's a lame thing to celebrate unless you actually win. Second, Penn State had already dropped to 2. despite blowing out a ranked Ohio State. In the final week, both Nebraska and Penn State had two less than impressive wins. They were playing even opponents. Penn State won big, Nebraska struggled, yet once again Penn State couldn't jump them. So I don't think this game would have mattered. Also, Indiana alone couldn't cost them the NC. Penn State wouldn't have jumped Nebraska this week as Nebraska blew out Kansas. Penn State needed to blow out both Indiana and Illinois to take advantage of Nebraska struggling with Iowa State the next week. So Illinois would have cost them anyway, but then again I'm not sure there was anything Penn State could do as I explained earlier.

@@Tootbook Maybe. Illinois was more highly regarded. Illinois was known to have the country's best defense.

This game and voter sympathy for Osborne screwed Penn State of a split national championship. Love college football, but lack of playoff games for a long period of time is simply archaic.

@@Tootbook True, even though it's ridiculous. Penn State, who stayed in a hotel with no power and ate cold pizza for breakfast, basically spots Illinois a 21 point lead (all 3 of Illinois's opening TD drives started in PSU territory if memory serves me right), outscores them 35-10 over the final 3 quarters, and, yeah, the moron voters in Ohio and Michigan still would have punked us to #2. My opinion is that the fix was in all along. This team was CLEARLY better than Nebraska. But Big Ten country voters were jealous since no Big Ten team had won a MNC since 1968; all of a sudden these cocky Easterners come in and become nationally best in just their second year? Unacceptable. Instead we'll give a phony title to Osborne.

The fact that Penn State had a weak bowl opponent, whereas Nebraska played Miami, really hurt PSU’s claim for a national title.

@@aaronrider4051lol that rushing defense isn’t stopping Frazier or Phillips on January 1st not even Miami who had the best defense that year couldn’t . 49-31 Nebraska with the win.

@@dannyhuskerjay Nebraska scored 17 points against Miami. I'm not really interested in your ignorant Nebraska pretensions to greatness. Nebraska played trash offenses that year and was not prepared for Penn State.

Some real Ticky tack penalties there that kept that game way too close. Penn state should have had 49 points on the board.

All of Indiana's points in this game are BS. Nothing against IU, a school I like from a state I love, as they fought hard, but seriously... 11:39: Collins throws a pick but Scott clearly rips the ball away. Should have been PSU first and 10 deep in IU territory. Instead it's IU ball and they score a TD on 3rd and long thanks to this very sketchy call, where the IU player has the ball knocked away. 12:38. Then we have IU scoring its 2nd touchdown after a horribly ticky tack call on the touchdown return for PSU that got ripped off. IU got crazy good field position from that. Even if we ignore the first half calls and say 17-7 is a halftime score reflective of the action, the absolute best case scenario for IU is PSU 42-IU 14. The facemask call on the Gelzheiser return is just ridiculous. The 3rd and 4th IU TDs didn't just come against back-ups but arguably shouldn't have been scored at all (see above). Where does the Big Ten find refs like this? And to have jagoffs claim this game as a basis for Nebraska's supposed "superiority," ugh, it's just too much to stomach.

12:38: only debatably a catch
