It was the first overtime game in what seems to be way too many between these two programs throughout the years. And while Iowa showed its strength in the first half with a solid lead at the half, it was Penn State who gained traction in the third quarter, after a few three-and-out exchanges by each team. Quarterback Rashard Casey was sharp in this particular game, and had the offense moving well in the second half. Field goals instead of touchdowns prevented the Blue and White from taking a win in regulation. In fact, the Lions had plenty of opportunities to seal this one, but just missed each time. The defense came alive in the third quarter by way of outstanding performances by Justin Kurpeikis, Aaron Gatten and James Boyd. Boyd had a string of plays midway through the third quarter where he literally was in on every play. Fun stuff to watch. A Ryan Primanti field goal at the end of regulation from 54 yards out was just short, and so overtime ensued. Casey ran one in for a touchdown on the opening possession, but then the defense almost seemed to forget they had to play as well. And so Iowa matched the score. After Iowa kicked a field goal to begin the 2nd overtime, Casey had a pass dropped which then was picked off on the very first play for the offense. Game over for the Lions. It was a thrilling and well fought match for both teams, but at least a loss like this came during a season for Penn State in which higher stakes weren't in play.
