Love this song. It introduced me to Goodman. I had a yard one time and was playing it. One lady said "If you are going to play that hippie I'll go elsewhere" I just smiled and turned it up.

This song made me cry uncontrollably when we were going through this mess. My friends and fellow students were among the 50,000 gone.

In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

I've seen the 1 down vote before and usually I just shrug it off. But I happen to think that this song by Steve is one of the best and this song is an example of old time singing that doesn't really exist anymore and chalk up that 1 down vote to ignorance of history and feel sorry for the person who posted it.

This is the goods, Well posted. Don't suppose anyone could post the one he does about the riverboat gamblers losing their shirts. You know the one where all of the calico dresses the gingham and lace being up in the attic with grandfather's darringer case. My mate laughed when I played it but I still love it and think he had an exceptioal voice. Thanx

Dear Penny, the checks were life insurance payments. Had Billy been killed in a car accident , or of a heart attack, would you refuse payment from an insurance company? I hope you didn't turn down your girls schooling benefits. Wars happen and will continue to happen. “The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history.”. F. Hegal.

I was in college when he first recorded this. i remember thinking st the time Penny should have kept the checks. Viet Nam was a dumpster fire, we should not have gone, but not compensating widows is a horror that would have also drawn flack from the hippies and suits alike. Goodman died young, a real loss.

I always interpreted that part as meaning that she could survive independently, without aid from the same government that helped kill her partner.
