Please enjoy my review of Penny's Big Breakaway! It released a little too early, but it's still the best platformer I've played in years.

My tinfoil hat theory is that they're laying the groundwork for when Sega comes to their senses and lets them do Classic Sonic in proper 3D.

Y'know what? I don't think Penny as a potential franchise deserves that kind of expectations, this game's that brilliant regardless of Sonic! I think what happend in Sega threw these guys under the bus with Sonic Origins Collection and then Mania 2 fell through and so they came to theulir senses and realized "maybe we shouldn't entiery build ourselves around the company that made and sold Sonic 06 and said irrepribly flawed brand"

In regards to the bugs I am willing to cut Evening Star a bit of slack here considering that PBB is basically running on a completely new custom-built engine and the fact that this was essentially the 1st big 3D project for many of the people involved. If they were pressured into releasing before it was truly ready than that would likely be more on Private Division the publisher

As someone who really loves it, I think this review is 100% accurate. This is a game spawned entirely out of a crusade for actual physics-based performing and the huge, organic skill curve it comes with. Everything else is secondary. It doesn't care that it takes some getting used to. It doesn't care that some people will cry "clunky and unresponsive" the moment their character slides a bit. It wants you to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater all over the place and it's GREAT at that. Penny being cute (+1 for sharp teeth on literally any character design) and the soundtrack being wonderful are just bonuses. And yes, it was definitely released early. Biggest issue currently is that Yo-Yo swings get stuck sometimed so you can't release them properly, kinda screws everything- it could also use a little in-game guidebook showing you all the stuff you can pull off because I think a lot of people won't figure it out otherwise. If you look at current WR recordings (or at least times that get close), it is *wild* how much timing swings properly matters. Like, I'm convinced that you need something approaching frame-perfect accuracy to really launch yourself as fast as possible (same goes for rolling onto slopes).

I'm definitely gonna get this game at some point! I love platformers and creativity like this is always welcomed. Too bad about the bugs, and the shadow should be visible directly below at all times. Let's hope they manage to fix the kinks by then.

can i be honest, I bought this game immediately on release, and when I first played it I thought it was crap and I got worried... until i got the YoYo and really started the tutorial. the movement felt interesting. I got a little worried again when I played the first level, but when i got to the second i realized, Yep this is made by sonic fans. I enjoy it... but haven't had time to play it. honestly if you want to play a old fashion platform with a great chunk of content, and fun levels, I'd recommend it.

Ive been really enjoying this recent resurgence of 3D platformers. Ive been really liking Demons Turf lately. It has a really fun moveset and recommend it.

Great review. I'm definitely at a stage where the bugs and frustration of getting used to new level gimmicks leave me feeling sour, but the charm and allure of such a unique 3d Platformer keep me wanting to get into it.

I actually just discovered this channel since KZfaq was telling me it this video was suggesting my review of this game. Awesome stuff, I do agree with the skill level and the yoyo being a bit finicky at times. But as a full package, games an amazing momentum based platformer that is so obviously Sonic inspired.

Great video. I have to get this game. Although I'm surprised that there's no replays on the leaderboards, this game seems like a PERFECT fit for that sort of time/score chasing competition

So far I’ve only seen 2 very minor bugs while I’ve been playing so far and I think it feels great. The weird part is I would expect more since I’m not even running it natively on windows

I also noticed not alot if critic reviews are available, you'd think a game promoted so heavily by Nintendo would have tons of reviews.....but not this one. Probably linked to the fact that the game was rushed out by Nintendo or the games publisher.

Sonic Mania is much easier than this, first of all it's not 3D, none of the mania developers has any experience working in three dimensions, it's got it's own challenges that aren't present in 2D game development. Secondly Sonic Mania builds on an already established gameplay formula, where the actual physics formulas for Sonic are well documented and widely available online due to so many sonic fangames existing, with this they went for something totally new so i'm not that surprised that there's bugs. As for best Sonic game, that's still Sonic CD, sorry but Mania does not replace CD Mania isn't even the best fangame, that would be Before the Sequel and After the Sequel imo

Finally someone said it, it's a really fun game but damn is that character design unpleasant. Maybe it's the alongated eyes, overly colorful palette or the hat that doesn't really suit the character.

What are you two talking about? This is Penny’s Big Breakaway, a fast, and most importantly CARTOONY 3D Platformer. Not some realistic and gritty game like the Last of Us 2. I understand people can have their own opinions, but I just don’t understand what’s inherently wrong with Penny’s design as a character.
