what he's saying starting at 2:00 is so true. If you listen to J Dilla's music. His mixes were always so perfect. He was constantly going from mixing the record to his truck and listening in the car. If you analyze the frequencies in his songs, it's hitting at 40, and 3k exactly how jack said. That's where the soul of the song lies. In a time when theres so many tutorials and lessons, it's still just best to use your ears.

Finally someone who says listening at a low level for balance is important! People always call me crazy for advising my students to check mixes at low volume regularly as you work. It will absolutely help you make better mix decisions.

Teddy Riley is soo underrated! The guy's talent is so vast, expansive. Sings, plays various instruments, produces, arranges, mixes, writes for Heavies in Industry. That album Pensado speaks of is a Classic!

Jack Joseph Puig is one of my favorite producers. He's worked on so many projects I love. Random aside, but it's crazy how differently he dresses and presents himself now. Saw a more recent video with him on Produce Like a Pro, and he's a total hipster. He looks way more like what you'd expect from someone who worked on Weezer's Pinkerton, Belly, Dinosaur Jr., Jellyfish, Nada Surf, Big Wreck, and Aimee Mann.

Amazing program this was. No demonstrations, but so much learnt - and that's after we've been to audio school. Fantastic end quote "music was made to praise God." I only just discovered that "Jehovah" (old text) taught Moses a song (God taught Moses) and Moses was then to teach it to Israel. Music has a huge history and has come a long way in production terms. I loved the experience of testing out mic positions with headphones on. Cracking.

The Psalms are essentially an ancient hymnal. King David wrote many of them, but there a Psalms (songs) from Moses, and a few others in there as well. "Let everyone that has breath, praise the Lord" if we don't praise Him, the rocks will cry out.

50:59 thank you for saying this. Some of this guitar pop is excellent, but I get really confused when people call it rock - I grew up on Deep Purple and Motörhead so yeah. You can make rock music with synths (Hawkwind anyone?), what JJP said about Zeppelin and mandolins.

This is great-have learned a lot from listening to this. Puig is a Catalan last name, as far as I know. Is his grandfather from there, or from the Caribbean? It’s common in the Hispanic Caribbean...Puerto Rico, DR, Cuba.

I'm so interested in Jack's idea of using compression for "feel." I would love to know a general idea of how much compression he is using to get those effects? I know it probably is based on each individual scenario. This really reminds me of the way Gregory Scott from Kush Audio talks about compression. Love Gregory Scott. You ever listen to his podcast? I think I started understanding compression better when I started using it more as a tone shape than a dynamic controller. If it were just about dynamics, it would be more effective to simply ride the volume until the track was perfectly even. But a compressor can smooth out a harsh attack or it can bring up the attack on a track that feels flat. It can bring up the sound of the room on a room mic or the sustain on a bass guitar. It can also introduce subtle (or obvious) pumping effect to a drum bus or the whole mix. There's so much that "feel" could mean.

This was recorded in 2011. Sometimes people just make a bad analogy when trying to convey something off the cuff. Let's jump to a good conclusion and give him the benefit of the doubt. JJP may have worded it differently if he had known 9 years later people would still be watching this interview to learn from him and that some of us would interpret something that small as racial hate.
